View Full Version : What Makes Something a Night Cream Instead of a Day Cream?

Why is a night cream (hydrator) for the face just that, and not a day cream? I can understand if it is a funny color - like brownish or something - you wouldn't want to wear out or if is a bit greasy on application so you wouldn't want to put makeup over it, but what if it isn't? What if it's consistency isn't any problem - is there any reason not to wear it during the day? There are night creams for my skin that I would wear during the day, but they are labelled "night creams" so I haven't done so. But why not? Any reason? Thanks in advance for any help.

Night creams tend to be more emolient...but if they agree with your particular skin for day use...then by all means...go ahead. Your skin just might need more emolients for day...afterall you know your skin best! :)

Good question Hershey, it could be a ploy to get you to purchase two products when you only need one to do the job. However now there is sun screen SPF 30 that adds aditional protection from the sun. They do work and I use them both daily.

Thanks for the responses. :) What exactly is an emollient (gotta get the dictionary... LOL)????

Hershey...LOL An emollient is anything that soothes and softens the skin. My Mom never uses a "day" cream, because she loves the extra hydration of what is classified as a "night" cream. I agree that you should use whatever feels best on your face at the time you are using the product. That can change for me with weather, time of month, etc. You think up the best questions!

Novalee, thank you so much for your compliment!
I'm so glad I started this thread. Now that I'm reading the responses, I know that the "night cream police" won't come and take me away if I wear it during the day LOL!

Good Morning Hersehy!
This is another great thread started by you!
I could never find a a night cream or serum that actually works for me. All those labeled night seem so heavy and "strangulating" to my skin.
When I was younger I used Oil of Olay morning, noon and night. Thinking of going to back to it, it was amazing. At least for me.

HHI, my sister would agree with you 100%! She swears by Olay products.
According to an inside source at the cosmetic company I work for (team of dermatologist, biologists and cosmetic chemists) there is a difference between the benefits of a Day Cream vs. a Night Cream.
Night creams work by restoring collagen, lipids and elastin in your face. These essential elements nourish and moisturize your skin in order to maintain a correct pH balance. Night cream is like a much needed vitamin for tired, stressed skin. Utilizing the stable environment of the night while safeguarding skin from free radicals. Patented formulation effectively utilizes the stabilizing environment of the night (darkness, stillness, relaxation) while neutralizing free radicals, a recognized factor in the appearance of skin aging. Benefits of "beauty rest" where your body is rejuvenating cells etc.
A product that contains retonil should only be used at night.
If I can get anymore information as ingredients I will.

Hi all - great thread! Also, thanks for all the informative responses. I've often wondered this very same thing. My skin tends to behave most of the time, but sometimes it would like a so-called night cream all day long. I don't use the retinol or alphy-hydroxy products because my skin hates them at this stage in it's life. Good to know I can feel o.k. about using something a little richer when my face feels "tight". Again, thanks for the info!

Hey Beag!
Glad to know I am not the only on that has issues with AHA's and BHA's. I was looking into switching over to Dr. Denese but fear her ingredients will leave me with a face like a baboon's butt.

BR - WOW - now I'm really glad I asked this ques. - your post was a wealth of info.
Can you tell me why - about the retonil (did you mean retinol?). I'm asking because I think I've used that during the day at times, and now wonder if my face is going to fall off or something LOL.
Thanks again to all - keep those responses coming! This is very helpful. :)

LOL - Hershey's doomed! :)
Hi HHI! I'm glad I'm not alone with the AHA issue. I was beginning to feel so out of it because everyone says that stuff's soooo good and all that and I just toally reject it (the results are pretty grusome). Basically everyone I know swears by it, but not me. I wish I could though, since I'm definitely not 20-something anymore.

Retinol can make the skin sun sensitive. Retinol exfoliates the skin. My company recommends if you are using a retinol product to use it at night and to wear a SPF during the day to protect the skin.
Hope this helps!!

The moisturizers I use for the day all have an SPF in them. Products labeled "nighttime" use feel way too greasy for me. I have found that I like the Isomers (I am experimenting with "try-me" sizes of this line) wrinkle defense cream at night. It feels very light and cool going on. It doesn't have an SPF so I wouldn't use it in the morning.

Day creams are Regular, night creams are Decaf.

Hershey, the main differnec is a lack of an SPF. I wear my Reclaim night, during the day because the SPF version irritates the daylights out of my skin. So you are not alone. Enjoy your day!

The difference between night cream and day cream is about $10.00
LOL - kidding - I use night cream during the day also because it is a richer moisturizer and my face and neck like it much better. Gotta keep the face happy!

Several females i am acquainted with are what might be considered to be 'frugal! That is, they use olive oil/salt, etc!
"bumping"
Just read an ad in Lucky magazine....Tylenol PM came out with Vanilla Caplets.
"Sleep. For a Natural Glow that won't Smudge or Smear During the Day. Lack of sleep may make skin look unhealthy. Worse it may lead to skin that's dry, rough, and acne prone. If you have pain and trouble sleeping, try Tylenol PM. It's non-habit forming and won't leave you groggy. So you and your skin can get a restorative night's sleep".

Bumping an old thread of mine for Hellokitty, who stated on a different thread today that she didn't see why a night cream couldn't be used as a day cream.
Hellokitty, I thought you might be interested in some of the posts on this thread.

Thanks, Hershey - that is very good info! I guess my main concern would be that I'd like a SPF in my moisturizer during the day.
I was always skeptical over night cream because I felt that if you wear moisturizer during the day w/makeup, and cream at night, when would your skin have time to "breathe"?
Hi kitty........nighttime is when the body rejuvenates which includes your cells. A night cream/moisturizer just intensifies the process.

Kitty, you might want to try out the Dr. Denese Day Cream with SPF 30. I myself don't care for it, it makes my face itch but I know others that just LOVE it. As for a night cream, I am still on an endless journey trying to find the right one for my skin. BR is right about the night time cream, you really want to find a good one that will help in the rejuvenation process.

Can't get enough rejuvenatin', that's what I've always said.
Especially for those of us that are getting up there in age and are turning 39 for the hundred and eleventy twelvth time!
Do I know my skincare and makeup or what?? lol

I switch off between Oil of Olay's Night Cream and Dr. D's Triple Wrinkly Smoother. I find both of them don't leave my skin greasy and absorb fairly fast.

BR, you are a walking encyclopedia of makeup and skincare knowledge.
I'd also like to add that nighttime is a good time to take your calcium/magnesium/vitamin D supplements to rejuvenate the inside, too. And don't get me started on green tea and antioxidant foods and supplements.

Ugh, so many things to think about!
Perhaps, if I do start on a night cream, I will look at what Olay has to offer. I'm a fan of the stuff I use during the day, so I guess might as well try their nighttime alternative.
And Jas, you health freak you!! (hehe, at least sounds like it!) I love my green tea, I'm glad it's good for me.

Kitty, what goes inside your body is just as important, if not more so, than what goes on the outside.
Another thing that's really good for you is imported dark chocolate, the darker, the better. I know you love that!
If I wouldn't have started eating healthy a long time ago, I bet I would look like I was at least 55.

Oh Jas.......please do share your knowlege of vitamins, minerals etc.
I recently started taking Potassium supplements. Read that it can help prevent migraines. Its used for high blood pressure which restricts blood vessels and that is what a migraine does. I am hoping it works or atleast helps.

That's what's wrong with this place lately. Jas, I'd love to know more, but I respect your feelings. I'll contact you privately. I just posted this to state my opinion. :)
Your face does not no the difference between night and day. It's all a sales gimick.

Be careful, some creams that are labeled day have ingredients in them that make your skin more sensitive to sun light. So you do have to be careful. I dont know if that is the case with all of them. Olay products are great I use the eye cream and the serumm, the products cost about 17.00 each. You do not need all that crap on your face. A good skin care routine and sunscreen are all you need. Your just washing your money down the drain by buying all these expensive creams.
