View Full Version : Anyone else creeped out by the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes hookup?

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be courted by Tom Cruise. His hookups always seem to be something cooked up by a publicist. I'm going to go digging to see if I can get to the bottom of this new Katie Holmes romance. Maybe I'm just bitter because I've finally resigned myself to the fact that he and Rosie O'Donnell will probably never be together.
Cruise: Holmes Is 'My Woman'
Fri, May 20, 2005, 09:05 AM PT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Tom Cruise is in deep, deep smit with his new love, Katie Holmes. Not only will he not stop talking about her, but his actions are sending a deliberate message to the world.
In an interview with MTV News, the "Collateral" star says that he knew what impression his public appearance with Holmes at Italy's equivalent of the Oscars in April would make.
"When I make a move like that, I'm saying, 'This is my woman,'" says Cruise. "You can't think in terms of what are people going to do or say. [Stepping out with her publicly is] saying, 'I want to share my life with this woman; this woman is exceptional, she is special, she is extraordinary and I have great respect for her.'"
"It's saying, 'I got nothing to hide. I'm happy,'" he continues. "I'm happy, man ... she is something else."
Cruise gushes even more on the Monday, May 23 edition of "Access Hollywood."
"I love this woman. I am so happy and I am not going to pretend or hide it or be shy. This woman is magnificent," he says, adding, "I've always seen how talented she was."
Although the couple has the support of family and friends, the media is still uncertain about how much the 42-year-old Cruise can have in common with the 26-year-old Holmes.
"She likes all the stuff that I love to do, she's funny and smart," he tells the entertainment newsmagazine. "We go scuba diving together."
Besides sharing mutual hobbies, Cruise and Holmes both have potential blockbusters opening this summer. Holmes' "Batman Begins" opens nationwide on Wednesday, June 10, two weeks before Cruise's "War of the Worlds" invades theaters on June 29.
If anyone is interested, Cruise and Holmes will be on Oprah Monday.

Not at all. Tom and Katie seem quite happy and good for them.
If anything has been creeping me out this week, it is the horrible coverage of the wedding of Mary Kay Letourno and the boy she was convicted of molesting.
I always thought Entertainment Tonight was more reputable than some of the other entertainment news shows, but after all this, they have fallen IMO.
Who cares about Tom Cruise, he's just another SHORT actor. How tall is he? Katie is 5'9" and she towers over him.

Hi S--
Count me in! I had been very "suspiscious", mainly because Tom had never wanted to talk about his romances before-- and then my "In Style" magazine comes the other day and guess who's on the cover? Katie Holmes! Her publicity machine has to be working 24/7, begging, pleading, making deals all over the place. (For those of you who might not know, just about every female celeb in the biz would cut off their right arm to be on the cover of In Style).
And looking at the pics of Katie and Tom, she seems very uncomfortable--head down, walking behind him, etc. Very strange.

Hi.....count me in too Susan....I would not have found it creepy, but like you said it is the way they are going about it. Staged and orchestrated by him. He does not sound completely sincere when he talks about it either. imo.
The fact that she could go from being with Chris Klein for 4 years...going to be married, and just switch it off and go to Tom sounds calculating on her part. Chris said he had no idea it was coming when she called off the engagement.
Maybe they are smitten now, but the initial meeting was creepy....he saw a preshowing of her Batman movie, and had his agent call her agent to arrange a meeting with him...almost like he did with Nicole....then he asked her out. It's not like they found they had mutual attraction, and some things in common, so they ignored the age difference and then procedeed. He kind of scoped her out.
I also agree about Mk and Villi....ugh.
I always felt Tom Cruise was a very over-rated actor & while he might be one of the nice guys in Hollywood, he's just TOO bland to generate real excitement.
As for Mary Kay.... I feel SO sorry for her poor kids & her ex-husband.
She's obviously not going to change & the media always did and always will love a good TRASHY STORY.... I don't blame E.T. for reporting this newest saga in her pathetic life.
I wish Mimi Rogers would come clean. That would be a good read I bet.

Count me in (as creeped out). I never thought of him as sexy, he never seems to know how to kiss in movies, it always looks forced. He's too intense in interviews, everything seems orchestrated. Though I've enjoyed a few of his movies, he always seems himself and hard to portray different characters...all you see is Tom Cruise. Not sure what the guy's problem is, but something ain't right.

There certainly is lots of gushing going on from TC's corner......I don't really him and Nicole making such a public scene of their affection. It is odd that he's doing it now.
A big 'Ugh' for the beret lady. What is with that?

Do you suppose his weirdness could be a result of Scientology? It seems that his spontaneous personality has almost been brainwashed away. I'm not sure if he was more down to earth when he first started out. But something's definitely weird now, with the job-interview-like first meeting that you described, Scoops.
John Travolta is a Scientologist too, and come to think of it, he gives off a weird vibe too. Almost TOOOOO nice. I know he's supposed to be the nicest guy in Hollywood, but both he and Tom sometimes seem to be under some kind of mind control.
Mel, you bring up a good point about the blandness factor. Neither Tom nor John make good romantic leads for that reason, IMO. Too bad, too. They're both great looking.

And what is it with both of them and talk show hosts???
Tom Cruise had Rosie swooning all over the place.....now John Travolta is Oprah's "favorite white guy" (borrowing that funny line from Chris Rock at the Oscars!).....although it sounds like Oprah is two-timing John with Tom on Monday!

Did anyone see him on Oprah today?Wow!...is he smitten!
I am not sure if it was real cute or simply pathetic.lol
I used to feel it was 100% pathetic when Rosie wnet on & on about "her Tom."
I found it even MORE pathetic after she formally announced she was gay.
I didn't see the Oprah show but I hope she was more restrained than Rosie used to be. It's uncompfortable to watch superstars relentlessly drooling over other superstars.

Awww, I loved the whole Tommy thing with Rosie, Mel. She seemed so genuine (I think it predated her celebrity, too) and the fact that she is gay doesn't mean she can't have a crush on a guy. Heck, Tom's supposed to be gay and he dates women! It's Hollywood, Mel, the gender doesn't really matter....it's more of an afterthought....haha just funnin'
I want to try to catch the Oprah replay this evening, lmroland. Thanks for the reminder! (Although I'm sure I'll gag after a few minutes and have to turn it off)

Susan, I enjoyed the Rosie/Tommy thing at the beginning also but after a while it seemed VERY forced to me & so it lost all its appeal. It was like a tired old joke & I wished she would retire it.
And her gayness really didn't have anything to do with that, I worded my response terribly. As I said, it just seemed to be so forced around that time.
Thanks for bringing up such a good point & keeping me honest. :)

It would appear some people just don't like to see others happy. If Katie and Tom are happy, then good for them, if it is all a PR stunt, then good for them. It would be a good joke on the tabloids.
I caught Oprah today and I am still saying "hmmm". It was just a bit odd IMO.

Did he propose??? They eluded to the fact that he was going to propose on the show. I figured it was a farce, but would like to know what actually happened.....

He didn't but sounds like he will at some point. She is a cutie.

Hi S, good thread; thought it was just me, lol.
<<His hookups always seem to be something cooked up by a publicist.>>
Caught a show the other day with some young folk talking about Tom and Katie, lol. Said that he got rid of his regular publicist and his sister is now handling him. They all agreed that was a huge blunder. I'm not really a fan, so don't know if that's old news or what.
Anyway, they all seemed totally creeped out by the both of them and were trying to figure out what was going on, lol.
btw, I saw a very unflattering photo spread of Katie after the Italian kiss-fest and she had what looked like major herpes on her lips and mouth. I felt bad for her--those were some nasty pictures.
Tom never did anything for me, lol; although I do have his autograph.
He was very charming--but very short.
Ugh...

I heard some clips from the Oprah show w/Tom this morning----I don't know who I'm more embarrassed for, Tom, or the women in the audience. Who are these people? lol. Everytime Tom said something about Katie they started cheering and clapping and screaming...........really, really strange!!
Susan

Yes, some serious adulation going on there! I'm sure that did wonders for Tom's already healthy ego.
How funny that Regis brought up this very topic with Kelly! Too bad they can't be more frank about how publicity really works, but neither seemed to want to "out" Tom and his desire for a big movie opening!

S, I thought Regis was trying to talk about it but Kelly would have no part of it. She is never willing to take a stand or make a point or have a real discussion. It's frustrating. I was just talking to a friend and saying I would have really liked to have heard more of Regis' thoughts on Mr. and Mrs. Smith this morning, but we had to listen to a hypothetical "Mark gets a part opposite Angelina" musing. Oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi L,
Yes, as Scoops has said, Kelly likes to keep it light.
Great for her fans who apparently love looking at her and are grateful for anything that comes out of her mouth, but bad for those of us who would like some substance! I'm not talking about a discussion of nuclear physics, just a cute back-and-forth about the topics of the day without a caffeine-induced detour into Fantasyworld.
Talk to you soon!

I know! "As if" anyone will be calling Mr. Ripa to star opposite Angelina. Don't worry Kelly, you won't have to quit your job......(unfortunately for some of us). lol
Anyone remember if Angelina was a guest on Live! before or was Kelly impersonating her for a Halloween show?
* Also, thought it was quite funny when Kelly described herself as having 'no neck.' Geeze, could it be that they both read at TVTalks? lol

What a shock! A certain group is whining, griping and bellyaching.
Oh, that's right....it's one of the seven days of the week, so, of course they're whining, griping and bellyaching.
95% of their posts----bitching about Kelly
5% of their posts----praising Regis
Doesn't seem to be good enough reason to waste so much precious time, watching and posting
My fav Reege line today---"The country needs a not so serious news program"
Funny how R&K don't take their relationship nearly as seriously as 'some' others do.
2nd fav Reege line today---"Art's like a crazy uncle"
I suppose some crazy uncle somewhere will take THAT seriously. LOL
There are some very strange people in this world...esp. online. LOL

Hi V,
Didn't Kelly play Angelina on SNL last year? I think she was Angelina and Amy Poehler was Kelly in the same skit!
Did they even do Regis and Kelly this year on SNL? It's been a while. Too bad....Darryl's Reege is too funny, and Amy's Kelly is a work in process but she was getting it.
Missed Live today....now what if they call me tomorrow??? Not smart.

Please tell me you're kidding. This is what Kelly brings to the table? She won't talk about real-life happenings, but shares her insecurities about her husband in a pretend hook-up?
I don't know who should be more embarassed, Kelly or Mark.
