View Full Version : Why Do Grown Ups Collect Dolls?

The Marie Osmond show inspires this thread...
I played with dolls when I was a little girl. I just can't understand why grown women collect dolls. I'm really not meaning to offend anyone who does - I'm just trying to understand the appeal of collecting dolls as an adult. Anyone?
(whatever it is, I don't get it).

Hi Hershey!
I was wondering about that too. My sister and I were terrified of dolls when we were little and they still sort of freak us out even today. Why do you want something that has a vacant stare and has the potential to channel the other world sitting in your living room? J/K
I was just thinking the same thing!! I love Marie. She is darling!
I have a few Barbie dolls in their original boxes like Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Golf Date Barbie etc but they are small and in a box. I can't see collecting a baby doll.

Maybe it's to make up for failure with their own kids and this way they get to start all over again.

Alot of people collect something...Dolls, Baseball Cards, Figurines, Cars, Charms, and alot of other stuff...I'll admit that I seem to be collecting stuffed Animals, still have so many from when I was growing up; and keep ending up with more...LOL
I was never into dolls, Barbies were my thing; only dolls that I ever liked were the Cabbage Patch ones....I also had one where the hair turned pink and blue, was kind of like a medium sized barbie with long blonde hair....

I think I originally started collecting them because my I didn't have many as a child. My mother was very conscious of the type of doll she chose for my sister and I. 30 yrs. ago dolls of color weren't made as pretty as so of the others. When I got up to about 50 dolls I stopped collecting them because they took up so much space and started collecting Lladros.

I heard Marie say that her 8 year old was playing with matches and burned down the garage and Marie's office!
I hope she spanked that kid's butt HARD!

I've never understood grown women collecting dolls, either. Not only that, they display them all over their home. My husband would totally freak out if I had dolls in every room of the house He's a terrific guy who lets me do whatever I want to do (within reason), but I think he would draw the line at decorating the house with dolls.
I love Marie, too. But whenever one of her shows is on, I find something else to do.

Okay, I keep lurking on this thread without posting. I'll go ahead and confess: I've always wanted to collect dolls. LOL And dollhouses. I, however, would not keep them all over the house. Why? I don't know. I had plenty of dolls as a kid. Never collector dolls though. And I just love dollhouses with all the minatures inside and stuff.
Okay, so I said it. :)

I can almost understand the doll house thing ... all those intricate miniature pieces, it's amazing! But the doll thing ... all those eyes ... watching ... waiting ... (running out of room again!)

lol Yeah, I guess that could get spooky. Some of those dollhouses are really awesome though and it would be really fun to furnish them. I never had a dollhouse; maybe that's why I like them now.

I agree that doll collecting is pretty creepy for a grown person. What really creeps me out is the hairdos on the Marie Osmond dolls and others like that. Like a baby or toddler would really have a 1950's style roller set!
I do think that dollhouses are kind of cool. I have a few "Wee Forest Folk" mice that are cute collectibles, but I definitely would never decorate my house with dolls or figurines.
(Marie Osmond and MBR, what a pair of sweeties, almost more than I can take at one time without barfing!)

I too have a confession to make. Years ago when my daughter was little, I bought her the most beautiful Bride dolls from Ashton Drake. There were 4 in the collection - Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall. I might add my daughter never asked for these dolls but for some reason I thought she should have them being a little girl and all. Well to be honest with you, I wanted those dolls, I admit it, I love bride dolls!!!! Anyway, my daughter grew up and moved away and now the dolls are sitting in the hall closet boxed up. Maybe someday she will want them, maybe not.

Awww...thanks. I'm not the only nutcase then. ;)
I do know one lady who watches Marie on QVC religiously (I watch sometimes too) and collects dolls, but she told me that they were so poor she never even owned a doll when she was little. She's now making up for lost time.

WHen my sister and I were very little my mom bought us Madame Alexander Dolls. SHe spent months before CHristmas knitting baby blankets and doll crap in front of us. She even bought Ethan Allen cribs for the "babies". My sis and I come hopping down on the magic morning and see the babies. We RUN, at top speed, as feet as our teeny little corgi legs would carry us, out of that room. We were terrified! We were screaming, my mom was screaming because she was disappointed that we hated the dolls, etc. When my Dad finally calmed us all down we returned to the never used living room (except for holidays and company) and saw motorized John Deere tractors ( we lived in Wisconsin then). That was our first and last doll experience. Yes, my mom KNEW we hated dolls before this.
...and now we must contend with our nieces "BRATZ" dolls. Talk about minions of satans and the harbingers of evil. Those are IT!

Thanks KaliChris, I needed to get that off my chest and if it wasnt for you, I would never admitted my "doll story" to anyone ;)
HHIgirl, I think my daughter had the same reaction you did to your dolls. After that bride doll fiasco, I never bought another doll for my daughter unless she asked for one.

I forgot to post the craziest doll story. Actually this could go under the crazy relative thread too. (Up here in the north we hide are crazies, my parents would KILL me if they knew I was posting this)
I had a maiden aunt. Three of em actually. They all lived together to the day they died. This one in particular loved to dress like a man..wait that is another story. Anywho. This aunt collected dolls. Millions of dolls. Displayed all over their dirty house. Armoires full. Any kind of doll and then the worst mania took ever...ELVIS dolls. Yes, ELVIS. All over the damn place. When she died she requested that 15 of them be buried with her. And one special one is encased in plastic and is her grave marker. Talk about being frightened at family dinners. This house did it!

lol No problem!
My niece has never liked dolls either, with the exception of Cabbage Patch dolls. I don't think they ever scared her; she just had no interest.

Jen, you're priceless! lol
I know folks with relations that are crazier than bedbugs, but they refer to them as "eccentric", and speak of them proudly. Why on earth is completely beyond me. lol
As for us, there was no shortage of them, particularly on my Mom's side! ;)

I still have my ALF doll. Does that count?
I also think Raggedy Ann & Andy are still cool.
I can't get into the type of dolls Marie is selling. I agree with the 'dusting' remark, Bee!

puddy, when I was little I got the Raggedy Ann doll that was around three feet tall. That Halloween, my mom took the clothes off of her and put them on me. Voila! I was Raggedy Ann. I still have that doll. :)
