I had a weird dream last night that me and Cubsfan were baseball announcers for the Mets and Cubs, respectively and we had an on-air chat during a rain delay at Wrigley: Here goes!!! PB: It's really raining here at Wrigley, tie score at 3 in the 5th inning and I have the distinct pleasure of talking to the newest voice of the Cubs and WGN 720, Cubsfan. CF: Please to meet you, Putbeds, Look at the rain out there so lets chat. PB: You know we don't have to talk about baseball we can chat about things I like and maybe you like say, QVC, HSN and classic rock. CF: I love the shopping networks especially the hostesses and models. PB: My fave has to be Patti Reilly from QVC. I like to call her America's Sweetheart, she is so adorable; I fantasize about her at night. CF: You and a lot of guys. PB: I love the fact that she's a real woman unlike that vapid, coked-up, racist witch Paris Hilton; I can't stand Paris at all. CF: I guess you're a fan of BBW (Big Beautiful Women)? Right. PB: You can say that again and Gary Cohen is bugging me about something (Gary reads me the riot act) PB: I know this is Mets vs Cubs but there's more to life than Pedro's fastball, Jose Reyes making great plays and Piazza hitting the ball into the parking lot, Gary, For christ's sake, not every man is a father of triplets. Sorry, for that intrusion, Cubsfan. CF: You make a good point. Now what's your opinion of Lisa Mason? PB: I think she is gorgeous; especially when she has her hair up and her voice is ever so sweet. CF: Too bad, she's married! PB: She's married; NOT DEAD CF: Great comment. PB: Another comment is Just because you're on a DIET; you can look what's on the menu. CF: What about HSN? PB: I watch the Q more but I check the ladies out on that channel as well like Lynn Murphy, what a hot blonde. PB: Heard the rumor that she's lives an alternative lifestyle? CF: I heard that she's a lipstick lesbian. (At that point, the director of the WFAN broadcast is having conniption fits) PB: Oh, I think we pushed the envelope too much just about now, Cubsfan. CF: So what? Just talking stuff, ya know. PB: Hey I see the rain is letting up a little bit but before we go back to Astoria and the WFAN studios for the 20/20; What do you think about popular music? CF: Classic rock for me. PB: Amen, I CANNOT stomach the garbage that spews out of the music scene like the Radio Disney/American Idol phonies. I'd like to see departed rock greats like Joplin, Morrison and Jimi Hendrix rise from their graves and beat the living you know what out of Clay Aiken. CF: Good point, I gotta go back to the booth and confer with Ron (Santo) and Pat (Hughes). PB: Nice talking to you, Cubsfan and I'll get to the National League scoreboard and they're in the 6th inning in Pittsburgh where the Dodgers lead the Pirates 2-0.....

You couldn't get that stuff past WGN-AM 720 either Putbeds. :) WGN is very bland. If you listen to it regularly you age 20 years and pine for the years of TV in the 50s that didn't have dirty talk on. :)

Once a month, HBO has a great sports show called Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. The September episode featured a rather disturbing report on racism in European soccer where the caucasian racist fans throw bananas towards the black players, and also make gorilla sounds. Cubsfan, you're right. In the local media; they keep harping on the future of Joe Torre and Brian Cashman. It's time for Torre to call it a day (I think he's had it with George). Many people forget that he managed the Mets from 1977-81 and the team was pitiful but that was management and their reluctantcy to spend money at the time until Joan Payson's daughters sold the team to Fred Wilpon and Nelson Doubleday in 1980. By the time Torre was let go in the end of the 1981 season; they were sowing the seeds for the great teams of the mid-to-late 1980's. --- "Roughing the Palate" -Miller Lite Beer Ref

Cubsfan, Woody Paige can be annoying at times. He's a writer for one of the Denver newspapers. When the Jacksonville Jaguars made the playoffs in only their 2nd season and they were getting ready to play the Broncos in the AFC Divisional Playoffs; Paige called the Jaguars "A USFL Team" and "Can we send a real NFL team to play the Broncos next Sunday". Then-Coach Tom Coughlin saw the article and ordered 60 papers PDQ to be given to all the players. PG has a smile that looks like he just took a dump in his pants and he is hoping nobody notices the smell. Harold Reynolds I think is the best of the comentators. He knows the game and the players. He comes prepared every Baseball Tonight. Another one who has disappointed me is Joe Morgan. He was one of my favorites on the Big Red Machine (after Johnny Bench) but he has a bug up his ass about Ryne Sandberg.

Cubsfan, That comment about Peter Gammons was too funny but I have to disagree about Harold Reynolds. In Sept 2003; The Mets had Bob Murphy Night at the last home game of the season and among the stuff the team gave him, they presented him with a framed Mets jersey that said Murphy #42 for the number of years he was with the team. I went to that game and after I got home I turned on Baseball Tonight and Reynolds wasn't happy that Murph had gotten the number #42 as a gift and I've disliked him ever since. Well that's because of Jackie Robinson. Since '97 the number 42 is retired for every team in baseball. The only players who could wear that are the ones who are still playing at the time of the decree.

It's a very touchy subject for the black ballplayers well at least the ones who know of Jackie Robinson (don't ask Frank Thomas). Who knows how long it would of taken to be in MLB without JR?

This morning on the Q; Jill Bauer had on former major leaguer Jay Johnstone on and he was selling the 4-CD Baseball Box Set and Book which features interviews, songs and great play-by-play moments. Guess what? I bought it making it my very first QVC purchase ever. I'll be getting it on December 1st. The set includes the now famous obscene tirade from 1976 where Tommy Lasorda is ever so pissed after the Mets Dave Kingman smashes 3 homers at Dodger Stadium. The day before that, Kingman had struck out with the bases drunk vs the Cubs to lose the game and after that, Sky King totally destroyed his locker. --- VIVA LA RAZA -Eddie Guerrero 1967-2005

Jay Johnstone missed the '84 playoffs when he was with the Cubs as a pinch hitter and outfielder. He was left off the roster for Davy Lopes because Lopes was a much faster player.

Dave Kingman must love hitting 3 home runs in a game against Lasorda's Dodgers. Kingman did it in '79 when he was the LF for the Cubs and hit 48 HR's 115 RBI. Kingman always said he got charged up playing in Wrigley Field. From '78 - '80 he had his best batting avg seasons of his career. Too bad he was an asshole who didn't attend games when he was injured. The Cubs had a Dave Kingman day with kids getting t-shirts of him. Kingman was at a fishing convention because he was getting paid to be there. When the Cubs finally traded him they received Steve Henderson for him.

Sky King had 2 stints with the Mets 1975-77 & 1981-83. In 1976, he was on pace to break Roger Maris record when in July, he broke his thumb diving for a ball in the outfield and was out for nearly the rest of the season. In his 2nd stint, he played mainly 1st base and had good stats but when the Mets got Keith Hernandez, his days were numbered and he went to the A's where he gave a female reporter from the Sacramento Bee a gift: It was a white rat and a note that said "Hi, My Name Is Sue". I was at the game in '77 when he was playing for the Padres one of the four he played with that year (Mets, Padres, Angels and Yankees). He's the only player in MLB history that has hit at least 1 HR with four different teams in one year.

In that game it was a double header Kingman was on first and a ground ball was hit to I believe Manny Trillo. Trillo flipped it over to Mick Kelleher at SS. Kingman came in with his spikes high to take Kellerher out. Kelleher took offense and started beating the crap out of Kingman. Jose Cardenal came in from LF. Steve Swisher who was catching (Steve is the father of Oakland A's OF Nick Swisher) came in. It looked like he was trying to pull players apart because you could see his arms moving. When it was all done Jose Cardenal was the last player to rise from the melee. On TV that night they had a nice close up and you could see Swisher not pulling someone off put laying in some punches no doubt against Kingman. After that Kelleher who is a much smaller person than Kingman had the nickname "Killer" in Chicago.

Mick Kelleher had the distinction of playing his entire career with out hitting a HR. He played 11 seasons '72-'82 for St. Louis, Houston, Chicago, Detroit and California. 622-GAMES, 1081-AB, 230-HITS, 32-2B, 6-3B, 0-HR, 65-RBI, 74-BB, 133-K, 9-SB, .213-AVG. The closest I ever saw him get one was at Wrigley Field against the Mets around '79. The ball fell just under the basket out in LF and he got a double.

In Chicago, Sun Times columnist Jay Marriotti who also appears on Around the Horn is nick named the Wind Sock for writing one thing then changing his mind when it appears he will be wrong. Woody Paige could be called this too. I don't know how many times on Cold Pizza the other hosts would say (when they are on a location shoot at some college) that Woody would change his pick to suck up to whatever college they are at.

Did anyone see on Sportscenter I think it was Wed or Thurs Jay Crawford of Cold Pizza made the top sports list? He was hosting Cold Pizza in Las SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM. There was a BB court and from half court with his back to the basket threw the ball over his head and it went in. I think it made #3 for the day.

The NFL Pro Bowl moved to Honolulu in 1980 because many of the players didn't want to spend a week in LA, New Orleans or even Kansas City where the game had been played prior to that. Many of the guys that get picked either haven't played in a month or had just played in the Super Bowl. I remember watching Ricky Williams get the MVP when he ran for 2 TD's before he left the Fins in a lurch. Woody Paige went down with the Falcons' ship. He predicted the Falcons to play the Broncos in the Super Bowl. On Friday he said the Falcons would get the #5 spot in the playoffs. Even though the Falcons needed help to just make the playoffs and now are out of them.

This weekend in Chicago at the Hilton was the Cubs Convention. On Friday night was a question and answer with various Cubs players (current and former), Jim Hendry (GM) and manager Dusty Baker. A question about the lack of fundementals was brought up. Dusty being Dusty basically said that players should know fundementals by now.

Yes Dusty they should but you are the manager. The reason you have things like Spring Training and practices is to make sure they are still using good fundementals. Whether it's hitting, pitching or fielding. It's your job to make sure that the players don't slack off on them. Your job isn't just to fill out the lineup card and sit in the dugout chewing on your toothpick.

Cubsfan, I wish that the Mets had a weekend convention like the ones the Chicago teams have but they do have a winter caravan that goes around New York City each January. I'm surprised that neither NY team has a winter convention. Especially the Yankees. They have many former players they could bring in for the weekend.

Both Dusty and Hendry did receive boos. It depends on which paper you believe. The Sun-Times reported a great portion of boos while the Tribune (the Cubs owner) downplayed and mention only a smattering of boos.

The Mets have their annual Winter Caravan coming up where they make appearances all over New York City. Ironically, Kris Benson had come to New York to help out when the deal to the Orioles was made (Read my rant in the Sports Talk). Tony Kornheiser on MNF? LOL. At least he'll do much better than Dennis Miller. Btw, I would tweak the sideline reporters. Keep Suzie Kobler but have them replace Michelle Tafoya (She's OK) with my 2nd fave ESPN female: Erin Andrews. One of the "Yankee" teams of Little Leaguers was booed during a festivity they had for all the LL teams. Curt Gowdy was featured on the ESPN Classic show Classic Now. They had Jeremy Schap give his reflections on Curt. I think JS is overated his father Dick Schap was great but Jeremy is riding on his name. IMO he brings nothing to a sporting event. They couldn't find someone who was more of a contemporary to Curt is unbelieveable.

You'll never see another dynasty like that ever again in college basketball. And they did it admist the upheaval of the social and racial changes in America during that period. Hearing the story about Bill Walton getting arrested for protesting the Vietnam War is a classic. HBO puts out great documentaries and not just Sports. Can't believe ESPN's Baseball Tonight led with the Cubs. After all they are not either the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox. All it took was a dugout and clubhouse fight to make a non-east coast team the top story. This looks like the Jim Hendry era is going to end this year. Especially if the Cubs are sold. The new owner will probably want to put his own people in.

A-Rod is being blown out of proportion on ESPN. Was it against the unwritten code? Yes but he wouldn't be the first. The A-Rod situation reminds me of stories about the 19th century Baltimore Orioles. Inventers of the Baltimore chop, hiding balls in the tall outfield grass, John McGraw holding on to a player's belt. When the player tried to break for the plate he was held up. If there was a trick they knew how to do it.
Mike "King" Kelly was another 19th century player who knew all the tricks but could find loopholes in the rules.

Legendary baseball player Jimmy Piersall had a brief stint on the station in its early days and I even talked to him. Back in the '70s Jimmy Piersall was the color man while Harry Caray was the play by play man for the White Sox. This is when Bill Veeck still owned the team and the switched from the red/white uniforms to the fugly black and white turn of the century/softball uniforms. In '76 they wore the shorts in the second game of a doubleheader.

When Jimmy and Harry were teamed they were the only reason to watch the Sox at all. If the team sucked (which it did except for '77) he and Harry would blast them.

Mike North is a rarity he stumbled onto radio by accident. He used to work for the Chicago Park District, He owned his own hot dog place (no ketup on the dogs), he had a local access football betting show. He is an original at WSCR-AM 670 (The Score). It started out as a daytime only station. The frequency at the time 820-AM conflicted at night with a station down in Texas. It was moved to 1160-AM and when WMAQ-AM stopped being an all news station the Score moved there.

Mike North started as a mid-day host with former Bears OL (friend of Walter Payton) Dan Jiggets. Then him a Jiggets were moved to afternoons after a while the station split North and Jiggets. Mike was given the morning slot while Jiggets was at night. North is a White Sox fan which he should be happy because the Score is the radio home of the Sox. It includes lots of suck up to the Sox programming where they are careful not to criticize the Sox too much. That would make owner Jerry Reinsdorf mad. JR loves Sox TV announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson. The Hawk is the quintesensial White Sox appologist. If anything goes wrong its usually the umpires fault.

Gary Sheffield needs to keep his MOUTH shut. He called Joe Torre "a racist" during his upcoming HBO interview saying that the Yankees treat black ballplayers differently than white ballplayers. As a Mets fan, I'll say this: Torre is NOT a racist whatsoever. (FYI, Torre managed the Mets during their down period from 1977-1981). Hearing the story about Bill Walton getting arrested for protesting the Vietnam War is a classic. HBO puts out great documentaries and not just Sports. It was good but I was only interested in the second part mainly for the move. If you go by the special it wasn't racially motivated it was a finacial one. The Braves moved to Milwaukee and were making money hand over fist. They had a new stadium with plenty of parking. The Dodgers fan base moved and there was only 700 parking spaces around Ebbets Field.

Reminds me of Wrigley Field but WF is right by the L train so you don't have to park near Wrigley. Plus you need a special city sticker for the neighborhood or you might find your car towed if you park where you shouldn't. Some of the residents will let you park in their driveway for a fee of course. There is also a parking spots available in a technical school with shuttle bus service.

The debut of the new franchise from New York set the tone for a season in which the Mets emerged as America's favorite four letter word.

Trouble began on the eve of opening day in St. Louis when 16 Mets got stuck in the Chase Hotel elevator for 20 minutes. It was a definite omen.

The next day, in their very first game, the Mets' fortunes plunged straight into the basement in an 11-4 loss. But what made this debut so pitiful was their first inning performance.

With Cardinal runner Bill White on third, New York pitcher Roger Craig looked in for the sign and checked the runner. Then Craig went into his stretch ... and dropped the ball. Dumbfounded, Craig watched the umpire wave White home.

The New York Mets had given up the first run in the history of the franchise on a balk!

This time from the chapter Cheapskates: The Stingiest Misers in the Majors

The New York Yankees-1978

Leave it to the Yankees to come up with an organized campaign in team greediness. Those Penny Pinchers in Pinstripes won the World Series and then voted to give manager Bob Lemon a measly half-share of the purse.

All Lemon had done was come to the rescue of the Yankees on July 25, 1978, and take them from the depths of the second division, 10 1/2 games back, to the world championship. Everyone in baseball attributed the victory to Bob's calm leadership after the stormy reign of Billy Martin.

Everyone, that is, except the Yankee players who gladly lined their own pockets while shortchanging Lemon. In December, after monthos of bad press detailing their stinginess, the team grudingly voted to give Lemon a full share after all ($31,236) and held out a half share for Martin ($15,616).

The Fall Follies: The Most Atrocious World Series Performances

Los Angeles Dodgers-1966

It was as if the Dodgers bat rack carried a sign that read "Do Not Disturb". During the Series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles hitters--a contradiction in terms--could have taken batting practice in a china shop and not broken a single plate.

In the worst hitting perormance in Seires history, the puny Dodgers could only muster an anemic .142 batting average. Lou Johnson "led" all Dodger regulars with a meager .267 average.

The Dodgers further shamed themselves by establishing or tying new lows in the Series record book: most times consecutively shut out, three; most consecutive scoreless innings, 33; fewest total bases, 23; and fewest runs scored--just two!

Not to be out-embarrassed, Dodger centerfielder Willie Davis set his own black mark. It happend in the fifth inning of the second game. He moved in on a routine pop fly by Paul Blair, lost it in the sun and dropped it for an error. Andy Etchebarren came up and lofted another soft fly to center. Incredibly, Davis did a repeat performance of his blunder and grabbed the ball and threw wildly past third. Three miscues in one inning by one player! A new Series record!

Perhaps it was best that the Dodgers lost the Series in a four-game sweep. They were quickly put out of their misery.

It's spelled Girardi who was Manager of the Year in 2005 when he guided a Marlins team full of young players to the playoffs. Girardi was also a final candidate for the Cubs job but it went to Pinella. Many people here think Girardi is going to hold on to the Yankees job until the Cubs one opens up whenever Pinella retires. Girardi came up through the Cubs system and played college ball at Northwestern. He knows what to expect here unlike Dusty and it took Lou a little time to realize that we want a champion. The crowd will boo players who are not playing all out.

There has been rumblings here about A-Rod possibly coming but I don't want a 30 million dollar a year player who is MR. April-September and hits .068 lifetime when it really counts in the postseason. I'll root for him to break Bonds mark (I don't call it a record)

Now with their 8th loss that means the Bears are finally out of the playoff hunt. Grossman will not return this season he has a MCL sprain. The talk is whether to give Brian Griese the starting job or see how Kyle Orton has progressed in learning the offense. When Orton started in 05 he only had 30% of it. He was in his rookie year and they dumbed it down for him.
