Kathie Lee Gifford could not resist getting nasty with her old Live partner Regis Philbin after they sat down for an interview for her new gig as a television reporter on The Insider.
The National Enquirer has learned Kathie Lee ripped into him off camera over the ugly issue of why she was never brought back on the show as a guest host.
"The sparks flew between them — and not in the most heartfelt way," said a source. "They've always poked fun at each other in public and in private — but off-camera some of Kathie Lee's comments apparently turned downright nasty."
The source believes that it's still a sticking point with Kathie Lee that she has not been asked back on the set since she left in 2000.
"Kathie Lee is perturbed by not being invited back," the source said. "It's something she and Regis don't discuss. They didn't even have her on when she was promoting herself as a singer with her Goodnight Angel CD a year after she left the show.
"Regis has felt the show needed to distance itself from the former cohost, and allow new host Kelly Ripa to spread her wings. Plus, Regis' pal, producer Michael Gelman, and Kathie Lee never got along well.
"That's just an example of how Kathie Lee and Regis have never and will never see eye to eye on everything.
"It doesn't mean they don't care about each other, it just means they can pick each other apart whenever they get together!"
While on camera they happily reminisced about great trips they took together for the show, but then she let Reege have it when the cameras were off.

To be 100% honest, I HAVE always wondered why Regis never invited Kathie back to their show. I think the on-air reunion of Regis and Kathie would be the biggest thing to hit TV since Dave & Oprah's reunion...bet it would be so much fun!
I understand the initial hesitation (about the Kelly spreading her wings etc.), but its been a half-decade since Kathie left...I think Kelly has spread her wings far enough (and then some).

She bad mouthed him on the Today show when she was a "rock singer" with her ridiculous song and gyrations, and now she's floundering and wants to blame him. Laughable to me. One more reason why I never liked her. She's too phoney for my blood. The fact that Gelman doesn't like her means nothing, if Regis was so inclined, I'm sure he'd get his way. As far as her Insider interviews....a joke. You get to see little sound bites here and there. Nothing I'd bank on if I were her.

I agree, Ivory. I am sure Regis gets what he wants if he wants it.
It makes sense that they wouldn't invite her back for a year... or even two but after FIVE YEARS you have to wonder what's going on.
Maybe it's Kelly who doesn't want Kathi Lee to make an appearance?
She has no real power, remember? (((winks)))
Compared to Regis; no, she doesn't BUT the producers still have to consider her feelings/reactions & how THAT affects the show.

she has no reason to feel that way. Kelly has a good contract for the show and she's not going anywhere for some time. I'm sure she wouldn't give a rip if KL appeared as a guest or not. It's Gelman & Regis that don't want her to appear on LIVE.

If the producers felt like Kelly was beginning to drag the show down, they'd buy out her contract as soon as they found a replacement for her.
I think they ALL might have valid reasons for not wanting a reunion.

true but IMO they're happy with Kelly and she's not going anywhere. I sure wouldn't advise anyone to hold their breath until then.....that is, unless they want to!
