I thought it might be interesting to find out what each of you thought was the best holiday gift(s) you ever got. I did a quick review of the threads and didn't see anything like this but if I missed it, feel free to say so (just be gentle)...lol. I'll start. Actually, I have two favorite gifts. My first favorite would be the laptop DH gave me last Christmas and a few years before that, the under the counter TV in my kitchen that I also got from him. Don't know whatever I did without either of them. OK..your turns.

Maria,
Probably my most favorite gift was my engagement ring, tied to a branch of our Christmas tree. He didn't put it in a box, however, just tied it on with ribbon, so it was very difficult to find. We have an awful lot of Christmas decorations, nearly 250, so it took me nearly half an hour before I spotted it!!
I will say that the bugger made me wait nearly 9 years for it, so I was hoping for something bigger than a diamond chip. He didn't disappoint!

Mine is from awhile back when my parents were having financial difficulties. I got a $20 dollar bill from them that Christmas. So I took that $20 dollar bill and I put it in a small box and wrapped it in Christmas wrap. I still have it. If I feel myself getting out of hand with material items, I remind myself of that box.

I'd have to say my favorite, and most enduring, is my Teddy (bear). I got him for Christmas when I was five and I still have him. He's given me 30 years of hugs when I needed them and I thank him (and my parents) for that.

hellokitty, your gift story is awesome :)

BR,
I think we were just so used to one another, that it seemed like the only thing to do. Not to take the shine off the story, so to speak....But hey, he was married for 10 yrs. prior to me, so the poor bugger just needed a little time to think it over.....wouldn't have wanted him to feel any pressure...;)
I did happen to mention that that ring had better be big enough to make my unmarried friends pea-green with envy!! Too many years of being the bridesmaid and never the bride.:)

Mine was my engagement ring too...got it 2 years ago this Christmas. Mine wasn't as romantic as yours...he got down on one knee and proposed. We had been out shopping for rings that day and I chose 3 rings I liked and he then went and bought the one he liked..so it was a surprise as to which one it was he bought.

Irishlass,
So what's not romantic about getting down on one knee and all that?

Hubby probably would've if his knees weren't arthritic. ;)

A letter from my dad. He secretly wrote a paragraph every year on my birthday since the day I was born. My mom gave it to me a couple years ago on the Christmas Day after his death. My brothers and sister also received one.

I love this entire thread, and I've gotten tears in my eyes more than once. Wow!

Edited to say: Lexy, your post really got to me. Partly because I was a Daddy's girl and still miss mine like crazy, and partly because that is one of the most loving things I have ever heard. I agree, he must have been an amazing man, and you were very lucky to have had each other.

Lexy,

That is the neatest, most thoughtful thing I have ever heard. It touched me so much that I had to share it with my husband. He said, "Wish I was thoughtful enough to think of something cool like that." What a great gift!

I'm so glad I started this thread and I'm so glad you responded, you made me cry happy tears this morning. What a wonderful dad you must have had and what a wonderful gift from him to you. My own dad is gone from my life for 5 years now but not a day goes by that I don't think about him and my mom (also gone). I don't have grandchildren yet, but when I do, I am going to remember the gift your dad gave to you and I am going to pass that gift forward to those special babies. You touched my heart this morning and even though you're a stranger to me, I got a gift from you. Thank you, Lexy...Merry Christmas.

Your Dad must've been very special. What a wonderful thing to be able to read when you are missing him!

This thread reminds me of the best gift I have ever given, so I hope no one minds if I mention it.

About 15 years ago, instead of getting gifts for my immediate family, I got each person a special card, and wrote them something straight from the heart. At the time, I was not so great at telling loved ones how I felt verbally, but I felt like I wanted to let them know what they meant to me, and how important they were.

While our whole extended family was opening gifts, there was a lot of commotion, a sea of wrapping paper, etc, and I look at my father, and see him reading my card, and CRYING. It was such a powerful moment. Everyone in my family loved what I wrote in their card, but it really touched my father.

I thought I was finished crying for the day...but I was wrong. lol

General, that's beautiful. Sometimes fathers and sons seem to have problems telling each other how they feel. That's why your Dad reacted the way he did. And I bet he never before or since had such a gift. :)

Last Christmas, My sister gave me a framed photo of our late mother when she was a young woman before she married my father. I was very touched, It's hanging up in my apartment. Later that day, she also gave my 2 nephews a framed photo of their father who was my late brother of him in his Army uniform. Everyone in the room started crying including me, I'll never forget that ever. My best haul was in 1986 when I got mainly New York Mets stuff. They had won the World Series 2 months earlier (It Gets By Buckner). Hopefully, on Christmas 2006, I'll be getting more Mets stuff after they win the World Series. --- VIVA LA RAZA -Eddie Guerrero (Still Missed) 1967-2005

When I was a child the thing I wanted most for Christmas was one of those music/jewelry boxes with the spinning ballerina.I thought nothing was more beautiful. But I did not ask for one. When I was a kid I just never asked for anything. On Christmas morning we were opening up gifts and my mom had gotten me one and inside she had put a new watch.I was over the moon.I was so happy.I couldn't believe I had actually gotten the thing I wanted most in the world.

Years later mom told me that everytime we would go into Woolworths she would see me look at it so she got it for me.

The box is long gone but the memory of receiving it and the feeling it gave me will be with me for life.

Hi nightsky, I think almost every little girl wishes for one of those boxes w/the spinning ballerina. That is a nice story, great memory!

I remember my jewelry box like that. I think I was so amazed at the ballerina spinning, I played with the ballerina too much and she fell off. :(

I think I had one of those, too. It's hard to recall that many years ago :O
I bought one for my daughter when she was little, too.

I remember in the late 60's, I had to have one of those mod striped mini dresses with the chain belt I got one and I looked so groovy in it, like Marcia Brady!
