I posted on the diamond thread about losing a diamond out of cluster ring that I stupidly wore to work. Here's a true story that happened to a friend. She and her husband travel alot because of his work. Once just after they had boarded a plane, she looked down and the diamond from her engagement ring was gone. It was a big 2 carat pear shaped stone. She calmly got up and began looking up and down the aisle. Then, just off the main aisle, she saw her diamond sparkling on the floor. I think that is just about the luckiest jewelry story I ever heard. BTW, have you checked your prongs lately?

pebbles,
I haven't lost a stone, but have cracked one! I used to own 2 dia. rings, the heart shape and a marquis. The marquis was just a shade under a carat. I was walking outta the bathroom, and somehow my hand hit the door frame very sharply, and it must have hit the diamond just right, b/c it was cracked nearly in half!

Total loss of course, not enough stone left to bother re-cutting it. I will never own another marquis, b/c they are such a thin stone for this reason.

I lost a pearl out of a ring setting once. Now I'm very careful when I wear a pearl ring to take it off immediately when I get home. My diamond ring is prongless, part of the reason it appealed to me.

SUCH a great thread ... and reminder to check our prongs!!! I think I'd die if I lost one of my diamonds! Your friend truly was lucky to find her stone on that plane!

I've never lost a stone out of a setting, but I still cringe whenever I remember the day that I was louping my color change Sapphire (BEAUTIFUL! Went from light sparkly pink to BLUE!) and I squeezed too hard on my tweezers and "fling" it was gone! Ugh! I NEVER FOUND IT! I didn't vacuum my livingroom for like 3 weeks!

yes, i have
before marrying ex i was the media speSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMt in an elementary school

of course i wore my engagement ring--it was a 1 carat oval
i looked down one day and the stone was GONE!
i was devastated

3 days later a little boy brought me a 'piece of glass' that he found on the top edge of a book (as it was shelved, standing up)
it was the diamond

i gave him a reward, a card and a kite--it was in march and we had a nice big field in which to fly it

as it turned out, that was my 'starter' diamond--the one i had when we split(after 17 years) was a honker!
all 3 were ovals,as is my Ceylon sapphire ring
just love that shape!

Wow, Bookie, were you ever lucky. What a nice little boy. My first engagement ring was an oval. I returned it when we ended the engagement. He said that I could keep it, but I didn't want a reminder of a bad experience. I never regretted it. Even if I reset it, it wouldn't have been a good thing.

Oh, Mysty. How awful. Where in the world could that stone have gone?

Back in the day when large diamonds were still relatively affordable, my aunt lost a 4 carat diamond out of her engagement ring. Never found it and could never replace it. Sad.

Reminder: If you clean your rings in a sink, always close the drain before you begin.

I am glad to hear about the fortunate ones who found their lost stones! I had a pearl ring set in silver, nothing expensive, but I really liked it. I looked at my finger one day and there was the ring...without the pearl. That was years ago, and I'm reluctant to buy a pearl ring now.

"Gulp"
It closes your throat almost, that feeling to look down and see that your stone IS GONE. I'm sorry you had to go through that!

Bookie, you lucked out big time! Whew! You had to have the weight of the whole world taken off your shoulders! Is that the best feeling or what? I've "flung" other stones out of my tweezers that I have found and there's nothing like the feeling of "getting it back home where it belongs"!

Pebbles, as far as where I think my stone went, it is probably With God Now... either that or someone is gonna find it in like 20 years, stuck between the slats of the wood floor UNDER THE CARPET because God knows I looked for that thing until I was cross eyed! I sifted the stupid hepa filter of my vacuum every time I vacuumed looking and even after everything was moved out furniture-wise when I moved I vacuumed my heart out and no dice! So it's in No-Man's-Land or wherever those things you lose go that you never find. I wonder if when we die we get them back? LOL

lol ... Mysti, I can't tell you how many times I've "flung" a stone while "playing". THANK GOODNESS for wood floors! If we had wall to wall carpeting, I'm sure they would be lost for good!

My solution: spread out a king sized white sheet first and sit right in the middle of it!
Even I can't "fling" that far! "Come back here you little Monkey!"
