View Full Version : What type of jewelry do you favor?
Linda Lou

Not necessarily stone-type, we have a thread about that. I mean, do you favor necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings? I LOVE rings most of all, b/c I can enjoy them. Next would be bracelets for the same reason.
Don't really care what I have in my ears. Had a pair of Diamond earrings once, but they were so darned expensive, and I could only see them if I looked in the mirror.

Definitely rings. Bracelets annoy me most of the time. Necklaces are OK. I seldom wear earrings because they annoy me, too. I have low tolerance for uncomfortable jewelry.

I usually just wear my diamond studs and my wedding rings. Occassionally, I'll wear a necklace or bracelet but not lately because the baby tugs on them. I would like a fabulous right hand ring, and a choker of graduated perals like they wore in the 50s.

The jewelry I favor is of course my wedding set. As Bee mentioned on another thread, that is sacred. LOL
For my 40th B-Day hubby had earrings made to match it. A small round ceylon sapphire surrounded by small round diamonds. Not very big, maybe each earring is the size (circumference), not the weight, of a 3 ct diamond. If I don't wear these earrings I have a small diamond pair I wear. I hate any "big" chunky style earrings.
I sometimes like to wear bracelets, I have a couple in white gold that go with just about everything.
Necklaces, I could take or leave.
I always wear a small diamond band on my right hand middle finger, I now have 2 that I prefer.
These are my favorite pieces I like to wear everytime I leave the house.

It's easier for me to say what I don't like ... lol ... I like it all, but I have a few rules (for myself).
1. Never more than 1 ring per hand.
2. Only 1 pair of earrings. I have two piercings in each ear but now wish I hadn't done it.
3. If I wear bracelets, I don't wear a necklace/pendant, and visa versa.
4. Never mix metals, unless the piece is two-tone already (David Yurman for example).
5. No thumb rings, toe rings or ankle bracelets.

LOL at the ankle bracelets. I read a funny article about bad girls, and how as ankle bracelets have become more mainstream, you can't tell a bad girl by her anklet.
Garnet333

LOL I wear an ankle bracelet and have for years. Its a small white gold figaro and I never take it off even in the winter. Does this make me a bad girl? LOL

bad ... VERY BAD! But we already knew that ... right?!? ;-)
These rules that I've made are only for me ... I of course don't hold anything against those that do like ankle bracelets (etc.) ... I look down at you just a little, but that's not bad ... right?!?

03-29-2006, 07:25 PM
OOOOH Brownies! Did somebody say brownies? Count me in! As for ankle bracelets, they drive me crazy, no offense to the ankle crowd! I sit cross legged a lot and it digs into me! I favor (really) a ring that my daughter gave me back in 1993... cost a dime from a gumball machine... you know the type... not the adjustable kind... comes in a plastic bubble... I put it on when she gave it to me and I told her that I would wear it until I got a rash cuz I'm allergic to all but Sterling & Gold. Well for some strange reason I never got a rash and have worn it EVERY SINGLE DAY since then! It looks for all the world like a white gold wedding band (now that the blue "paint" has worn off) and it has like diagonal "slashes cut into it. I wear it on my left hand when I want to look "married" and on my right when I don't! LOL The weirdest thing is that I'm a size 5 1/2 and so is this ring, which for me has always been a hard size to find. I wear earrings (gold balls... CZ studs... sterling hoops) on occasion but don't have much "bling" when it comes to jewelry, unfortunately.
I have lots of loose stones, but am more of a collector than a wearer. Well there was my two cents worth! Ka-CHING! BTW my daughter was 10 when she gave me that ring and she's now 23! Not bad for a dime!
beekeeper

My 10 cent ring came to my rescue tonight! (last night, now!) I was at a wedding reception and this sleezy guy tried "hitting" on me. Puh Leeze! I'm like "No WAY dude" I'm wearing this WEDDING RING (FROM A PLASTIC BUBBLE) AND MY HUSBAND'S GONNA KICK YER A** IS YOU DON'T BEAT FEET"! Ha! My daughter was like "Oh Jeez Ma you're still wearing that?" LOL

Hmmm, I pretty much agree w/bee on this! I used to enjoy wearing a few rings on one hand, but now I believe that less is more. One ring on each hand, and that's it.
I have two holes in each ear, also, but I let the 2nd pair of holes close up.
Bracelets for me, I have two that I interchange, but I only wear one at a time, as they are pretty substantial pieces. I don't really worry about if I have a pendant, though, because I don't have any large pendants, so they will not clash.
I don't like thumb rings or toe rings. In the summer I have worn ankle bracelets, but sometimes I get too lazy to put them on!
I love silver, but have recovered my yellow gold collection to go w/all the browns. Don't really have much white gold pieces, just a couple. But I love silver because I love the affordability and since it is so well priced, I can buy more!
I do have a pair of Epiphany Diamond-eek (as bookie calls it, lol), which I love. I think they are 2 carats, so it's a nice big sparkle when I have my hair up in a ponytail!

You will probably all hate me but, ..... I wear a stainless Omega watch on my left wrist, so I wear about 4 white gold bracelets on that wrist. My other wrist usually has 4-5 yellow gold bracekets! Yes I mix my metals!! Some of the bracelets are two-toned. For bracelets, I think more is more! I have a pretty big yellow gold cuff bracelet that when I wear it, I wear it alone. I usually just have one or two rings per hand. For necklaces, I usually always have on a gold omega, but sometimes switch off with other gold necklaces. In the summer I always wear a gold toe ring and I'm looking for a anklet to match.

ummm, that ss/18k day to day watch that i mentioned above is a Rolex, and i mix my metals too (i didn't want to name the brand, esp. after the posts saying how they lose time mine doesn't lose time, but about every 5 years i have to have it tuned up)
last year when my watch was away being tuned up, i bought the ecclisi tank watch with 4 different bands; i really liked it a lot, esp for work
dh likes when i wear the rolex; says that if i have it, wear it, so i do
i'm not a watch person,so wearing the same one every day doesn't bother me
matter of fact, it's easier to get dressed with fewer choices

I'm a ring-aholic! I get one, like, every two months! It sounds frivolous and spoiled, but I don't really go anywhere or spend a lot of money on anything else. I just got an incredible 14kt emerald cut pink topaz and diamond in a vintage setting at kauffmanns for a great deal. I also got a great deal a while back on a white topaz and tanzanite there, too. It is so interesting. The topaz is a big, round, oval etched with stars. I get so many compliments on it.
The only ring I've been able to keep from JTV is a 1ct diamond and 1ct rubellite tourmaline ring in a heart shaped baguette and round diamond setting. The ring looks SO expensive in person. They still have a few. You guys should check it out online. Gorgeous. The stone has an inclusion on the side, though. At first I was dissapointed and almost returned it, but then I realized that someone had to love that little tourmaline, inclusion and all! So I kept it. It's hard to get an un-included tourmaline, anyway.
I think stones are kinda like people. Not always perfect, but always beautiful in their own way!
mystylady
04-10-2006, 08:40 PM
Hi Jewelfreak! Tourmaline is a "type 3 gemstone" same as Emerald, so only one inclusion is great! I like what you said about people being like gems... just because they have flaws doesn't mean you can't love them anyway! IMHO, without flaws, we'd all be carbon copies of each other... perfect yet boring!
The AGS... American Gemmological Society accepts inclusions in certain "prone" stones and in some cases even welcomes them! Look at the Demantoid Garnet and "horsetail inclusions"! Many gems can be positively identified just by their inclusions alone... Thai Rubies vs. Burma Rubies springs to mind. Thai Rubies will tend to have black "balls" inside of them, while Burma Rubies will show "silk". If your Ruby has black inclusions that look like poppyseeds in it, it's almost certain that it's from Thailand! Your inclusion in your Tourmaline is actually like God's Fingerprint on your stone! Pretty cool, huh?
jewelfreak
04-10-2006, 09:47 PM
I agree 100% !!! You seem very knowledgeable about gemstones. I am learning myself and have read several books and have some equipment. I hope to take GIA online courses soon.
Personally, gem identification has come pretty naturally to me, except the damned clear ones, of course, and some of the reds.
Recently, though, I have gotten a little away from the loose stones, since having custom jewelry made can be costly. But lately, JTV has gotten in some great semi-mounts at good prices. I'm thinking of getting some. I have an awesome andalusite, checkerboard cut that is about 2 or so carats. Unfortunately, it has a couple of small inclusions on the backside, but they aren't visible in the front. I'm caught on whether I should get a casting for it or not. The one I want is only $80, so I probably shouldn't overthink it too much, ya know?

04-11-2006, 01:13 AM
Thanks! I have SO MUCH to learn yet! Slowly but surely I'm learning more and more. I went the same way you want to go: online gemmology school, and I've found that it's just way too hard to do by myself, without the teacher physically there to, well, teach. I went to the School of Gemmology (schoolofgemology.com) and while it was very informative and I did learn a LOT, I found online school very frustrating. It was basically just reading an online book with a test afterwards. I decided that I can read a book on my own, so I stopped "going". It's also nearly impossible to "see" a stone in a photo the way you do in "person"... Perhaps because you can only see it the way it is in the photo as opposed to seeing it in different lighting; different angles; different backgrounds. This was just my experience, however. Maybe you will have better luck! I hope so! It sounds like you're a natural. I have some tools too but the ones I don't have and really want are:
1. a Spectroscope 2. a Chelsea Filter 3. a Carat Weight Scale 4. a Refractomoter (sp???)
I agree about the red stones, dang it!!!! Is it a Garnet? Or is it a Spinel??? Both are singularly refractive. Both are red. Yaaahhhhhhh! I HAVE discovered that if the girdle of the stone is unpolished, it almost certainly means it is a Garnet... what Lapidary would leave the girdle of a Spinel unpolished??? Answer: none! But sometimes they DO polish the girdle on the Garnet... loupe it to check...which puts me back to square one! Garnet? Spinel? <blah!> Of all, this is the most annoying b/c of the similarities between the stones. Zircon is easy to ID because of the high refractive index... Tanzanite and Iolite are also two that I mixed up until I learned about the "grey" that will never show in Tanzie yet will always be identifiable in Iolite when viewed from a certain angle. I love Andalusite! I have several, the largest is an 8x6 mm oval, tho not a checkerboard cut. Yours sounds beautiful! I wouldn't overthink it too much: It sounds like a winner to me! What do you have to lose? If you wind up not liking it you can always make a killing by selling it on e-bay, right?? Which Semi-Mount is it? You can't go wrong for 80 bones! You have to check out gemshopping.com and "watch live"! Pricey? Definatly! Jaw-dropping to watch? You bet!!! Even if you can't afford it (the way I can't!), It's still so much fun to watch, IMHO!!! Nice to have you here, BTW!

Are you familiar with apatites? They are about the same color as a paraibo but much less expensive. Is a spinel considered valuable? I read somewhere that they are becoming rarer than rubies.
mystylady
04-11-2006, 08:36 PM
I love Apatites... to look at! Unfortunatly they're only a 6 on the Mohs and considered extremely soft stones. They're considered the number one alternernative to Pareiba Tourmaline because of how similar they look to each other, kind of like Tanzanite and Iolite... But you'd never want to put an Apatite in a ring cuz it'll scratch big time! The Rubies in the Crown Jewels turned out to actually be Red Spinel because they look so much like Rubies and there was no real way to test gems back then! They never replaced them, and they are still there to this very day! Spinel is rare, but a fine Top Gem World Class Ruby is considered one of the most rare stones in the world. Like they say about Ruby... It is the Gem of Queens and the Queen of Gems!

Mysty ... doesn't Angela always say that about Pearls? Queen of gems, gem of queens?!?
I saw the crown jewels last year ... those are some FABULOUS gems ... takes your breath away! If those are spinels ... I want some!
The apetite (and Pareiba) is such a pretty color ... unlike anything else! I'll have to buy some apetite ... cuz the other is just WAY too expensive! It's up there like alexandrite! :-(

Ugh I don't know... Angela... Grrrr.... does she say that about Pearls? I've not heard her, but maybe it's because whenever she's on I've got the "mute" button pushed! lol
I mean, we already KNOW what she's going to say, ad nauseum, right?
Yuppers, those are Spinels! They look like Top Gem Rubies, don't they? Where did you go to see the Crown Jewels? Aren't there a lot of different ones? How did you not flip out, seeing them? I would have!!!
I LOVE the color of Pareiba and Apatite! The price of Pareiba breaks the bank easily at over $30 THOUSAND BONES PER CARAT! I've never seen one in person. I wonder if it's like all the other Tourmalines in that it doesn't "disperse" like Beryl or Sapphire or Diamond, with spectral rainbow flashes. I guess that's why I love the Starlight Blue Zircon so much... you get that Pareiba-y, Apatite-y blue yet with the sparkle and flash of a Diamond. To see one in the sunlight is truly a sight to behold!

Went to see them in London last April ... totally fabulous! I made my hubby go, he really had no desire ... but I had to go! They have these little moving walkways (very slow) on both sides of them (encased in glass) ... I kept going around and around looking at them, cuz you can't stop. Unbelievable! It's hard to believe they are real ... Some of the diamonds are just HUGE ... takes your breathe away.

I saw some golden pearls in the window of a very high end jeweler recently. They were stunning. They're hard to describe; you have to see them. They sort of have a golden glow to them. Gorgeous. But they're not gold, gold in the usual sense. All I can say is Wow.
The rarest rubies are called Pigeons' Blood Rubies. You can only find them at fancy estate sales now. They are deep red with almost a blue cast to them.

Do you have any of these rubies Pebbles? I don't like the rubies that they sell these days ... they are either pink, cloudy ... or red and pretty clear but a weird color of red ... almost too bright ...
I had an aunt who wore a big ruby on her right hand. She lived in Laguna Beach California, and when I graduated HS, I got to go stay with her for a week ... this ruby must have been at least 3 carats ... solitaire ... and I think it must have been one like you mentioned Pebbles ... gorgeous! Nothing like the ones we see today ...

Bee, I have an amazing bright red ruby and diamond cocktail ring and matching necklace that my mother gave me. Not pigeons' blood rubies because they are impossible to find anymore. But it is so amazing that the sad thing is that no one thinks they're real. How's that for a twist?
My sister had a pigeons' blood ruby ring that an uncle left her. She had it reset and years later found that the jeweler had switched it with an inferior stone. Talk about angry and upset!!
Do not buy any of those cloudy opaque rubies or emeralds. They are junk. And beware of the lab created or dyed stones. There are a lot of crooks out there.

That's disgusting ... the switched ruby ... I'd be so angry!
I wouldn't buy an inferior stone. Even if I know nothing about a particular gem, I do research on what is good/bad before I buy!
Your ruby ring sounds fab! If someone asked me if one of my gems was fake, I think I'd smack them! How rude!

Bee, I have a 'friend' who is so wealthy it's unbelievable. But she is envious of everything I have for some reason. She is too cheap to buy nice jewelry and when she sees mine she always has a nasty comment. "Is that real? I don't think real rubies are that red." Or "There are lots of fakes out there. How do you know your stuff isn't a copy?"
It's infuriating and I can never think of a comeback.

Hmmm, how about next time she comments on your gems looking fake... smile sweetly at her and say
"I would think by now you would be able to tell if something is real or if something is fake" *look her straight in the eyes* "I KNOW I DO"
"It doesn't surprise me at all that you don't know quality when you see it"
"Incidentally, I don't give a rats whether you think it's real or not... maybe if you used some of that dusty money on something beautiful for yourself for a change instead of picking apart what I have, you'd see the difference for yourself"
"Your observational skills are surpassed only by your arrogance"
lol I don't know, I hate it when you're confronted by a person like that and your mind goes blank. Then, for the rest of the day you go over & over in your mind WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID.
I'm sure one of these days something will spring to mind and hopefully it'll be enough to shut her up once and for all!
Your Sister must have been livid! I know I would have been!

Pebbles, I'm not sure I could hang around someone like that ... it would just drag me down to that level. Is she really so insecure that she has to do that to "her friend"? I think it's horrible.
I know I've said it about a kabillion times, but I'm not one for the man-made gems ... but if I did have them, I would probably pass them as real ... isn't that the point of them in teh first place? I think it's so rude for someone to ask "is that real" ... can't believe people are that way!
I have a couple girlfriends who are also very wealthy, and they are the first ones to RSVP for a "fake bag" party, or to sport the fake diamonds. Maybe it's because they married into the money ... so they know how to be frugal and not be wasteful ... I don't know, but I think it's kinda cool, because you'd typically think that someone with that much money ... would NEVER carry a fake bag.

Bee and Mysty, I've known her forever so it's hard to walk away. But the next time she says something nasty, I'm going to say, "I would never say something like that to you." And I wouldn't. She's so proud of her cloudy emeralds, her pale tanzie and her all white opals. I wouldn't wear that stuff but I wouldn't make a nasty comment about them either. To give you some idea of how wealthy they are, her husband sold his engineering co. to GE. Her credit card has a million dollar limit. I know because I heard a saleman comment on it when she made a purchase.

I understand Pebbles, it's hard to walk away from an old friend. I'm sure she's fun sometimes, right?!?
Even if someones ring (example) is not what I'd call ... good quality or even pretty, I will always tell them it's gorgeous! I never want to hurt anybodies feelings ... and beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder ... black hills gold proves that! lol ... (jk)

Oooh <bites tongue> I didn't realize that she was a "Friend" friend. Of course you wouldn't want to say any of those things to her that I said... I think I was just letting off steam ...
I just think it's rude to be that way and doubly rude that she can afford to buy nice things and doesn't, yet trashes your treasures. I'm the protective type!!
I wonder why she buys such inferior quality jewelry when she can obviously afford anything she wants? Is she the type of person who you could go shopping with... perhaps help her pick out some nice things instead of junk? How fun would that be??? I mean if you can't spend a gazillion buckaroos on yourself the second best thing would be to help someone else spend their buckaroos, right? Or is it not like that with her? Either way, she shouldn't be mean, IMHO. You sound like you've handled it much better than I would have! Kudos! I would have been mad! But then again, a lot of the time, I'm all talk. I WISH I could say the kind of things I said before... most times though, I'm more concerned about the other person's feelings or I'm just plain chicken <buck buck> so I wind up stewing over it later. Pffftttt
