I like Rosie. I think she'll do a great job.

NEW YORK - Rosie O'Donnell is expected to make a surprise return to daytime television by taking over exiting Meredith Vieira's slot on the talk show "The View."

O'Donnell's appointment was reported Thursday by the newsmagazine "Extra." It was confirmed by a person close to the show who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because "The View" wanted to make the announcement on Friday's show.

ABC officials declined comment on the report on Thursday.

Dubbed "The Queen of Nice" when her syndicated talk show went on the air in 1996 and became an instant hit, O'Donnell won six Daytime Emmy Awards in six years as best talk-show host. She left the show to help raise four children with her partner, Kelli Carpenter O'Donnell.

It's an important appointment for "The View," which was created by Barbara Walters. Vieira's news background helped make her the solid center of the program on the days Walters didn't appear on air.

But Vieira joined the game of musical anchor chairs that began when Katie Couric chose to move to the "CBS Evening News." NBC quickly named Vieira as her replacement on the "Today" show, where she will begin work in September.

Joy Behar and Star Jones Reynolds, who have been bickering at each other lately, are also members of "The View" round-table, along with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. They're nominated together in the best talk-show host category at Friday's Daytime Emmy Awards.

"I think every agent in America is calling," Walters told The Associated Press shortly after Vieira's departure was announced on April 6.

O'Donnell has acted in a variety of movie, TV and stage shows, including the films "A League of Their Own" and "Sleepless in Seattle," and "Grease" on Broadway.

She should have no problem holding her own with the other ladies on "The View." Since leaving daytime television, O'Donnell has become a strong advocate of gay and lesbian marriage and adoption. With her partner, she operates a cruise line for gay and lesbian families that was recently featured in an HBO movie.

I personally am not a Rosie fan. It should however be intersting to see her with Star Jones. I'm not a fan of her either!

Should have known they would replace Viera with another far left winger.

I generally liked Rosie's talk show. I do not like The View - those women are vicious - especially Joy Behar - can't stand her - not crazy about Star Jones either. Since Elizabeth Hasselbeck has been on the show they have always been so mean to her IMO - think they are just jealous. I don't watch it regularly but it'll be interesting to see Rosie with them.

I'm not a fan of Rosie or The View fan. I think this is going to be an interesting combination of personalities.

I hardly ever watch The View... but the few times I did since Elisabeth joined, I noticed even the camera stays away from her. She hardly gets a word in, and when she does the camera goes to someone else. I guess she will have to be there a lot longer to get more "power" over some other newbies. I don't consider Rosie a newbie since she is so well known.

I have never been a fan of Rosie, and I don't watch The View, either.
I think Rosie is too shrill and I never could stand her show. I can't imagine her and Star together - two opinionated alpha females should attract a lot of viewers looking for a catfight, though.

This might be worth watching. I will be interested to see how Rosie and Star Jones get along :)

I guess I'm in the minority...I liked Rosie's show. When it was on, I worked as a manager of a restaurant, and was able to sit and watch it in the bar. (slow time at 3 pm).

I think it will be an interesting combo.... hope she puts Star in her place!! Can't STAND that woman!

I think Star's face looks really different now. I think she looks like a less attractive version of Diana Ross from the Supremes. I never used to think Star looked like Diana R. when Star was heavy.

I liked Rosies show, but IMO, she has become so confrontational and outspoken since leaving. She has said some pretty mean stuff about Star and Star's husband. if I were Star, I don't think I could sit next to her and pretend it didn't happen.

It was interesting on yesterdays show, that the entire time Barbara was talking about Rosie joining the show, the cameras were close on Barbara and Joy the whole time ... never did they show Star during the conversation.

I would guess, that Star will be gone pretty soon.

That's interesting Bee. I bet you are right, I am sure Star's days are numbered on The View. Not that they will fire her but because she leaves on her own. I havent read anywhere on my Gossip sites on how Star feels about Rosie coming on the show.

Bumping an older thread.

I have a question. I may have missed something about The View, which I only watch occasionally. Why is Rosie, the most junior member of The View, in charge when Babara Walters isn't on? It looks like she now has the most senior, important position, yet she is the newest on the show. Did I miss something about her joining the cast as the ringleader of the group?

Meredith was the moderator of the table, and that is the position Rosie took over.

F.P. and Bee, thanks for the explanation. Since I didn't watch The View much, I didn't even realize that about Meredith. Makes sense now! Here I was thinking that it was merely Rosie's personality that made her "take over" as the grand dame of the show.
