I am really pissed off at Ashcroft and Oak jewelers. Yesterday, my mom and I went to an upscale mall about 25 minutes from my house. We stopped in to this jewelry store, and I spotted this ring with a stone in in that was a shade of green unlike any stone I'd ever seen. When the salesgirl pulled it out of the case, it immediately turned a bright purple!!!
When I asked what it was, the girl said Kunzite. Now, I was a little skeptical, cuz I had never heard of Kunzite thet was anything other than pale pink, and exspecially never a color change one. But she swore to me up and down that it was a new kind called Merona. So for the moment, I gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe it was some kind of new treated Kunzite.
Meanwhile, my mom is getting really interested, who is always one for something really unique. Then I remember that Kunzite is known as "the evening stone", because it will fade when it exposed to sunlight, so I ask the sales girl if THIS kunzite will fade - she says she has no idea. Then she hands me two SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMal cards, one talking about Kunzite, then one explaining about Merona. Nowhere in this Kunzite card do they mention anything about this Merona or vice versa- nor the fading, which is off the subject of the story, but it still pisses me off for the person who would unknowingly buy a stone that fades.
Anyway, the girl finally says the merona is manmade. So then I'm like, it can't be Kunzite, becuase Kunzite is not manmade!!! So the girl finally realizes that she has no clue what she is talking about, and that the ring next to it was the Kunzite, and that the two stones have nothing to do with each other!!!
Now, I don't believe that this girl meant any harm, i truly believe that she THOUGHT she knew what she was talking about, but come on!!!! Don't they teach these ales people ANYTHING about gemstones?
It makes me so angry, because if I had not been there, my Mom would have bought this ring, and she would have paid $350 for a piece of manmade crap! And if she had, I wouldn't have even been able to bail her out after the fact, because I wouldn't have the information to figure it out it was bogus if I hadn't been there.
It just goes to show that people REALLY need to be careful about what they buy. You shouldn't have to be a gemologist to be able to confidently buy a piece of fine jewelry, but I guess this is the world we live in.
And 350 bones? For manmade? Come on!!!! I can see MAYBE $100 because its a pretty, unique conversation piece, but thats it. If I ever get to own my own jewelry store, my employees will be well trained or not work at all. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

I have never heard of a Merona but I have seen a few poor quality topazes that they are coating with a film to give them an irridescent look. They are giving them various confusing names. I wouldn't buy them under any circumstance. Watch out. I think that a lot of these new treatments are going to hit the market.

Kunzite is pale pink. Jackie Kennedy had a big kunzite ring that has been copied in costume jewelry. The real thing is expensive.

Makes ya mad, doesn't it? I always ask to see the Gemologist and if they say they "don't employ one" I back away slowly then beat feet outta there! That's like saying that the Doctor's office doesn't have a Doctor!

Well, I think that it just goes to show that reading an Antoinette Matlins book or two or watching some JTV even just for some info, can go a long way in protecing yourself from a bad purchase. Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with man made or created stones, we should just be informed about what we are buying so we can decide for ourselves if it is acceptable, not by some snot nosed, uniformed tennaged salesperson.

I own two Antoinette Matlins books; she rules!
I personally think that it's unacceptable to have uneducated, clueless people selling items for thousands of dollars a pop. Even K-Mart trains their employees! Not that every Jewelry store salesperson should be a Gemologist, but should at least know SOMETHING, IMHO.

Like I said before... if I was going to make a high-end purchase I would seriously consult with the store's Gemologist. If they weren't there, I'd come back. That's WAY too much money to spend without a consult, again, IMHO.

Here's from the chat that jewel posted under Gem Geeks . . . .
================================================== =============

Karen: are there no laws . . . .

Robert: Karen, there are no laws at all for the jewelry industry.

Robert: Most states refer to the FTC Guides under CFR Title 16.

Robert: But the FTC Guides are not laws...just guides..little or no enforcement.

Robert: So there is much that goes on in the industry that just slides by.

Gemnut: That's a shame, because it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of consumers when they feel "tricked".

Robert: Which is also why so many of us old guys are such beeatches about training the new kids in the old ways...Integrity, honesty, trust.

Karen: thats just wrong. there are laws for every other little detail in our lives, even weather or not you can cross the street with an ice cream cone in your pocket.

Robert: Yup, but not jewelry. No jewelry appraisers. and Not jewelry sellers.

Wow! Who knew???? So what exactly is even a GIA Jewelry Professional? A glorified salesperson. They can't identify and value gemstones and there are no laws that regulate the industry. We've gotta be careful out there. It's a jungle.
