View Full Version : Asscher cut stones

What do you think about this cut? I'm not personally fond of it. IMO, the pieces I've seen (in diamonique) scream fake.
QVC recently did some pieces with natural gemstones in the asscher cut that were ok. I LOVE the emerald cut but for some reason ... I just don't love this one.
QVC has 62 items with this cut, HSN has 4. Neither ShopNBC nor JTV had any.

I'm with you Bee. I don't think it looks believable at all, at least not in Diamonique. I would like to see the cut in a natural gemstone, but haven't as yet.

Looks like they offer 3 different items (ring, pendant and earrings) in asscher cut amethyst, garnet, blue topaz or citrine. IMO, the citrine is the prettiest, but I'd still rather have the stone in an emerald cut.

Hi Bee and Linda :)
I dont like the Asscher cut either. I remember when they had the Diamonique Asscher cut ring as the TSV. Not only was it not believeable, it was an ugly ring. Of course that is just my opinion :)

I don't like them. I saw those real gemstones cut in Asscher and didn't like them either. That cut to me looks like a diamond cutter tried to do a princess cut stone or emerald cut stone but was too hung over to do it right.
And I really hate when QVC shows an Asscher cut ring in a setting where the stone is turned on its side like a baseball diamond. Fugly!
I don't like it at all. And the Q is really pushing it. Wonder why.

Hiya Garnet! You know, even though I took the GIA course in diamonds and gemstones years ago, I never seem to recall any mention of the Asscher as a cut of stone! I mean, how prominent could it have been that it didn't make the books??
I also remember that TSV, and didn't like it either. I also don't like when they "frame" the stone with gold and smaller stones.

I did sell jewelry for a number of years. It's not required to sell jewelry, but I wanted to. I didn't say I was a freakin' Gemologist! I thought you read my posts much closer than that.................

What's so hard to believe about that?
Hershey

Mystylady, it's rather a culmination of recent posts that is straining my credulity. Perhaps LL has had a course in gemology from the GIA - could be. But how convenient that on the Moissanite thread LL posted "I do own a 1.5 round brilliant in a solitare setting." And on the glitter thread, no sooner did someone mention Avon Exotic Beaches that Linda Lou just happened to have some, a gift from her uncle. And now on the Asscher cut thread, LL just happens to have had a course from the GIA. Maybe all this is true. However, as I say, she is straining my credulity. I am merely expressing my opinion, since you asked. Others may certainly disagree. But I'm at the point where I'm thinking "oh, come on!"

Believing her is certainly your prerogative, mystylady, just as not believing her is mine. Do you have a problem? Or what?
Why would she make any of those things up? To inflate her importance. My opinion. Had she answered my questions in the first place, instead of using a diversion tactic not to, I might have been more prone to believe her, at least about the GIA post, not necessarily the others.

How would owning a Moissanite ring or Avon Exotic Beaches "elevate her importance"? It doesn't make sense to say that, IMHO. I'm all for freedom of speech, and the right to state one's opinions, don't get me wrong. It just seemed to me that you were jumping the gun.
What if it's just not anyone's business? Could you accept that? Being so understanding and all?

As far as the Moissanite goes, Linda told me she had one months ago when we were talking about them and how it has a greenish cast in the sunlight. This was back when I first saw them at a department store.
And really, you're right Mysty, how is owning Avon elevating your importance? Maybe if it was Chanel! I probably wouldn't talk about my Avon products. Not that I have any, of course!! lol!
Some posters just don't like other posters and that's all there is to it.

True. But not always. Who's to say? A lot of what we hear we have to take at face value. Being in a faceless, nameless BB Community, it comes with the territory, I guess.
You DO get to somewhat "know" certain folks though, and make good friends too, I might add!
Sometimes specific personalities just clash and will until the end of time. It's unavoidable and expected. For the most part, I've seen the posters here just try and get along. If they can.
And then there are those who no matter what you do or say, they want to pick a fight about it. Unfortunate but true. Life isn't interesting enough without a gripe, I suppose. At least to some people. I say "knock yourself out"! That doesn't mean "feed the fire"! This is ALL IMHO, of course! I prefer to stay out of the line of fire if I can help it.

I'm straining YOUR credibility, because of things that I post on, that I either know about or have an interest in?? As if it were some kind of big whoop that I mentioned a GIA course, or Avon lotion, or having a Moissanite! OMG, it sounds so very silly and trivial just repeating all this back! I will ALWAYS post on things that I know about, or care about, just like you or others do!
Let's face it; it's the fact that it's ME posting about the above that bugs you the most.
I explained more than I should have by stating that I took that GIA course while selling jewelry. It's was very helpful and interesting, too. But, this is not a courtroom. You are obviously just looking for a fight. You are in this one alone.

Now what is the above statement, if not indicitive of an over-inflated sense of self importance? Much more so than mentioning a $6 tube of handcream, or a over-priced created diamond simulant. Sheesh.
There's also many things I've mentioned on the threads that I would LOVE to own, but don't---a pink sapphire, a 2 ct. diamond, a laptop. And even if I had those things, I think it would take more than THAT to make me feel that I was in any way self important.
There were valid points I was trying to make with my posts. I never heard of the Asscher cut in the Diamond course I took. My invalid Uncle can't shop, so a Avon lady who comes to the home he's in takes his orders for gifts and suggested the cream to him. A thread on Moissanite comes up, I own one, should I not give my opinion about what it looks like? I have many faults, but I DO try to be honest.
This whole thing is so very ridiculous......most likely a hoped for end result of me not posting anymore, or posting far less, and it hasn't worked before, and it won't now. Overall, I still enjoy coming to these boards more than I do not.

Just in case anyone really cares :)
The Asscher cut was first created in 1902 by a renowned diamond cutter, Joseph Asscher. Several years later Joseph Asscher was chosen by King Edward VII to cut the famed Cullinan diamond for the English crown jewels.
Asscher-cut diamonds are usually octagonal in shape or a square with beveled corners. They have a deep step-cut crown and pavilion that create what we call the Hall of Mirrors effect. When you look directly into a well-cut Asscher diamond you see a wonderful illusion like an infinite hallway of reflecting mirrors.
The Asscher cut of the early 1900s evolved into the elegant Emerald cut that became so popular during the Art Deco era. Many of the antique diamond cuts - Asscher, Old European and Rose cuts - are now experiencing a revival of popularity.
Choosing an Asscher Cut Diamond
The Asscher cut, is designed to draw the eye into the diamond and as such, you should always select the highest quality stone you can afford.
In order to be considered an Excellent Asscher Cut, the recommendations are:
Cut: Excellent
Color: D-K
Clarity: FL - VS-2
Depth Percentage: 65-69%
Table: 54-64%

Ok about not posting the multiple PMs you got, LL. Sure, sure, I believe you.

Believe as you like, Hershey. I rarely lie, unless I think it'll really hurt someone's feelings to do otherwise. I am telling the truth.
As for that "you've never seen me incensed" comment Hershey---you know, I have always hated whenever someone says something like that----as in "You'll KNOW when I'm mad".
It's so very ridiculous. As if anyone has that much power over anyone else, especially on a damned web site. Get over yourself, would be my best advice.

Unasked for advice is unwanted advice. Besides, I value your advice about as much as I value a dog turd.

Actually I read that it was invented in the early 20th century and is now enjoying a resurgence. You might be thinking of the Rose cut. That one is very old.
I do like the Asscher cut.

Yeah, now, the Rose cut is another older cut..and the Asscher cut is what...105 years old now?
In real stones, the Asscher cut is absolutely stunning!
