View Full Version : Why I Like Watching QVC
Hershey

We have a lot of threads here critical (and deserved so) of QVC. I thought I'd start one asking why we DO watch QVC and what we actually like about it. I rarely sit down and watch QVC. Most of the time I have it on as background noise while I'm doing other things, and if I hear or see something that I might be interested in, I'll turn my attention to the TV. While watching war news about the Israeli Hezbollah war yesterday, it occurred to me that I have QVC on so much because most of the news is so bad and depressing - not particularly something I want to hear all the time. I don't really like network T.V. much, and so it's usually either a cable movie on or QVC (and somtimes ShopNBC). Also, I occasionally find some product interesting, even if it prompts me to go look for something similar locally. For example, almost all the gadgets, kitchen stuff, and home stuff that QVC sells I can find locally for cheaper and w/out the shipping and handling costs, but some of it is a good idea and I'll look for it to buy here in town.
And you? Why do you watch?

Hershey, I feel the same way - I don't have QVC on 24/7 = I usually have it on for a show that I know I will like. like jewelry, clothing, etc. anyway, I remember either reading or hearing that during the monica lewinsky nonsense that QVC had its highest sales! and I believe cause people were tired of all that stupid stuff and wanted to just hear some people being nice to each other, courteous. you know - civil! so while one thread thought that yesterday's buzz on style was lame - I was at work and viewed it a couple of times without the sound - I thought it looked like it could have been fun as well. and with the way the world is going we could all use a large dose of fun!

Oh, that is SO true backseat!!! Anytime you can be diverted away from what's going on in the world and just have some fun and laugh, even for a little while, well, I'm all for it.

I don't watch electronic shows, computer shows , garage shows, fix it shows, many jewlery shows, skin care shows, sewing shows, health/senior shows or when male hosts are on except (Dave V. or Rick D.) I also don't care for some of the venders hosts and when Ultrex/Cook essentials man is on. (Thank goodness they changed the guest host for Ultrex recently) I go to sleep with Bob Bowersox is on.
I like the food shows, kitchen shows, organizing shows, a few outdoor summer shows, some home/garden shows, some apparel shows, holiday shows, bedding/bath shows, home decor shows, and bath/body show.
I like when Valerie Par Hill and Lori Granier is on.

The funny thing is that I used to be such a mall person, but I'm so busy with everything that ordering online (QVC or catalogs) is really my preference right now. I never used to miss AM or PM Style, but it's not such a big deal anymore.
I will keep it on for background noise as well. Well, unless it's NASCAR. lol
I do tire of the repetition, but then I think there's always new viewers stumbling upon the channel every single day. I started watching QVC in 1995 and it had already been around for almost a decade. Us old-timers are bored by some of the hosts and shows, but they might be hooking a new viewer (Kathy Levine did that for me w/her personality).

I liked watching QVC because I had a shopping addiction. I would still have one, but now there are no funds to feed it:(
I'm thinking of turning to a life of crime because I'm an addict and I can't afford the 12 step program.
Hi, my name's Denise, I'm a shopaholic.
*sip of coffee, inhale a cig*
Nah, life of crime sounds more entertaining.

I'm someone who loves to read, and QVC (and sometimes HSN and Shop NBC) are on mute a lot of the time when I'm reading. I'll pop on the sound if something looks interesting.
It's also great to fall asleep to!
I'm a news and CNN addict, too, but this past week I can barely stand to have it on. I bet that the Q's ratings will be a lot higher until everything settles down in the world a bit more.

I'm also a news junkie, panda. But I just can't stand to hear another thing about gas prices, Iraq, Lebanon, and whoever else is bombing whatever this week. I think that's why shopping channels, Food TV, and TV Land are so enjoyable. It's an escape from the real world which is damn scary right now.

Actually I have been just the opposite this week. I haven't been able to turn Fox off. I did watch JRT's diamonique show yesterday and for some reason, did a lot of damage. And I'm not crazy about Diamonique!
It keeps me company. If I'm up during the night I can turn on the Q for a while. I don't buy like I used to. Prices going up + high shipping and handling. I have been more interested in their cleaning products lately and have purchased some of those. I don't buy jewelry anymore, a few clothes items. That's it.

I used to watch it a lot more a few years ago, now it seems everyone gets on my nerves, especially the callers, and the hosts and vendors talking over one another. I can't stand that. I like to watch mostly the kitchen shows, diamonique, and gold shows, although i rarely buy anything anymore. I usually have it on as 'background noise', and if nothing else is on in the middle of the night when I can't sleep....I used to enjoy QVC a lot more, and actually 'watch' it more than just have it on b/c nothing else is on to watch.

I started watching it last year, but really didn't get into it until early this year. This year I moved up to Northern Maine, where we have one choice for shopping (Wal-Mart). Since I DETEST that place, QVC seems to be the natural choice. Unlike buying on the internet and Ebay, QVC sells the product to the viewer, explaining features and benefits. I'm a person who does better seeing something, then reading instructions. QVC works with me very well in that respect. There is something to be said for watching something that's not all death and destruction. I find an excellent way for me to keep up with the news is to read the Boston Globe while QVC is on. I also leave the TV on while I clean or if I'm at home alone. The mindless droning in the background of QVC reminds me that no matter how bad the world is, life goes on. QVC actually helped me beat my insomnia. My doctor said if I didn't fall asleep within 5 minutes of getting into bed, I was to get up and do something mindless for 10 minutes and then try again. QVC was my mindless activity, and always worked like a charm.
Since this is my first time living away from parents and/or a dorm, I've had tendencies to buy more home related products. With 3 Cats and a 4 month old Black Lab puppy, I never miss a candle show, or a cleaning one. I'm a Birki addict, so I'm looking forward to this weekend having Birki shows! You just can't find them up here. I like the Epiphany collection of Diamonique, but not so much the gold stuff. I don't watch gemstones unless it's opal or my or my fiancee's birthstones (emeralds and peridots respectively). I can't stand watching the Dell shows, as I know how inflated the prices truly are. Seeing I only have Wal-Mart for fashion, I have started to buy a few pieces from Denim & Co, and I recently picked up a few ensembles from Sport Savvy. The ensembles are great for throwing on to take the puppy out. I recently bought a Stan Herman robe and I love it like I've loved no other robe (thanks to y'all for your opinions!)
If I didn't have to stop now to take the puppy out, this would probably turn into a thesis on QVC...

Meg,
If I could just offer up a suggestion, stay away from Susan Graver and Maggie Sweet from HSN. They'll make your Walmart apparel look like Haute Couture.
I also leave on OVC on weekend nights for noise, as I am alone then, and just can't sleep when there's no one home.

IceCat,
Since you don't have any local clothing retailers, you should also check out landsend.com and LLBean.com. I do like Denim & Co. and Sport Savvy also. I have about 10 pairs of Birkie's. Addicted, too. Whenever I go out in heels, I aLWAYS have Birkie's in the car. They have some really cute colors and prints now. Also White Mountain is great.

Hello. Have been a Q fan since Monique was a model. Have met Kathy Levine and her mother in Michigan where Kathy spoke. Know the family of a cameraman and spoke with Jefferey Hewson during the word game where we won a cash prize. QVC becomes a strange friend, no need to purchase, or they have the right thing especially to send to relatives far away. Bare Minerals has done more good for me than three dermatologists. Comments on this Board are very interesting and even answerd questions I have had.
Actually, I have read all responses today and agree with almost all. Thanks, Carol

I have watched QVC from the very first show. I remember "Tootie" and watching Kathy tapdance when they sold out of products. To be honest, I don't watch much anymore. I flip to it during commercials or when the news gets too intense. I can't remember the last time I ordered or was even tempted to order. But I enjoy most of the folks who post here and it gives us something to gab about, so it serves a very useful purpose, LOL.

Hey pebbles! Are you thinking of Q Bird?? Tootie was from HSN, back in the day. It was annoying too.
I think that they used Q Bird to do that Word Game thing.

Kitty, your uncharacteristic Diamonique shopping binge was probably a subconscious way of dealing with your anxiety from watching the news all week. No joke.
I watch QVC because I work alone in a room with no view out a window, on a computer 8 hours a day, sometimes 6-7 days a week. I have a TV set up to relieve eye strain (something to focus on across the room). I found if I put on HGTV or a talk show during the day, I would end up turning off the mute and bit by bit I'd be watching TV more and working less. Since I get paid on production, this is not a good thing! QVC is perfect--no plot line, nothing compelling me to pay too much attention, but I can look over and see interesting stuff for 30 seconds every few minutes and give myself a break from the computer screen. (Then I come here and complain about it, which kind of defeats the whole purpose! Maybe I better rethink this plan...)
I have it on in my off time too for pretty much the same reason--no plot to keep track of. I can be cooking or cleaning or whatever and come in and out of the room without really missing anything, but the chatter keeps me company when no one else is home.

I was watching Daniel Kiviat the other day on HSN just for kicks and giggles, and it's amazing that they can sustain that line. I can't imagine an age group it appeals to, but SOMEONE must be buying it.

I used to really enjoy QVC when Kathy Levin was on. It was something about her that was appealing...she seemed to be very true in her discriptions. I think MBR is the same way. What I would not do to see Kathy back. I thought she was hilarious, knowlegeable and an overall pleasure to watch.

Great thread Hershey!
I'm like most, I don't plan or sit down specifically to watch QVC, unless it's a Joan Rivers jewelry show, or maybe some of the jewelry shows (bees). I'm a cronic flipper ... drives my hubby nuts. I think I must have a touch of ADD cuz I can be totally involved in a show, get bored during a commercial and flip the channel, find something else that peaks my interest and forget what I was watching 5 minutes ago. :-(
I don't like the calls in general, but at times I do find myself very touched by the sincerity of them. I can understand that many people are introverted or homebound, and thus becoming very attached to the hosts. It's like an extended family for many. Look at how much we talk about the hosts, their personal lives, their on-air shenanigans ... it's no different than talking about our best girlfriends or family members.
I did watch more when Kathy Levine was on ... didn't matter what she was selling, she was entertaining. MBR is fun to watch too ... she's sweet as pie and says some of the dumbest things! lol ... not a criticism ... just saying ...
I watch QVC 10 times more than ShopNBC or HSN. IMO, the hosts at QVC are so much more genuine and non-pushy than other channel hosts. Don't get me started on (oh my gosh) Pamela McCoy or Shannon Smith! ugh!
Meg (Ice-cat) ... I'm there with ya on the "I HATE WALMART" sentiment! I won't go there.
