View Full Version : OT: Annoying Holiday Commercials

Every year those Lexus spots featuring those over-privileged people make me want to hurl. "Honey, I spent $80,000 on a car without telling you!" is one line of copy I'd like to add to those spots, but the one where the smug dad and mom give one to their college age daughter is particularly repugnant.

Hey, I'm all for materialism, but these just go too far.

Has anybody seen the new BMW commercial designed to invoke your memories of how excited you could be by a gift at Christmas when you were a child? Well, the children they chose really need a time out in the biggest way because all they do is SCREAM at the top of their lungs in the most annoying manner possible. Hey, screaming is OUT OF CONTROL behavior and doesn't conote childish excitement to me, it conotes "brat".

I worked in the business and I guarantee that the creative team who put that spot together have NEVER had children.

Just needed to vent for a moment!

Take comfort, Panda, in the fact that come January when all the bills come in for the excesses & overindulgence they felt they "had to have" for Christmas, that they will most likely be eating macaroni and cheese 5 nights a week to compensate.

That's the part the ad execs never show.

I haven't seen either of those commercials, Pandagirl, but I'm glad you feel better now for venting LOL!

I know this isn't a holiday commercial, but if I see those dancing scissors one more time I'm going to scream!

And on the other hand - the 2 holiday commercials I have always loved - the
Folgers Coffee when "Peter" comes home - and the Coke commercial with the bears. (The Master Card "and a full house - priceless - isn't bad either).

I enjoy the beer commercials during football games this time of year...I especially love the guy who's wrapping up a 6-pack of beer and then can't help but drink one...so it becomes "The Holiday 5-Pack." I can't stand the ones from Big Lots (elves running all over the place with shopping carts) or the idiotic ones with talking lawn ornaments for the US Postal Service. Aflac has a few clever spots...and I do enjoy the coffee commercial where Peter comes home, although it's a bit stale now.

Regarding those new car commercials, do they even make those big red bows they put on top of the cars? That has always bugged me.

I always thought the same thing. HOw the heck do you slip that one by your SO? Hey honey, don't be mad at least you have a nice shiny hunky of metal that just got it pretty little self devalued by 10,000 smacks when I drove it off the lot. I thought it was just me being bitter. lol

I remember howling at a SNL skit awhile back, where the did a parody of one of these commercials but the joke was that the wife was pissed off that her car Xmas gift had NO bow on it!

The hubby is shown saying increduously "But, honey, it's a BMW! For you! It's your present!", and the wife is pouting & saying "I don't care! It has no bow on it! It's not the same without the big bow!"

Hysterical.

I totally agree the Lexus commericals are soooo obnoxious (and the beamer commercial) and now (I think) the Lincoln commerical where she bakes a friggin' gingerbread-Navigator and her hubby comes home and "now he knows just what to get her for Christmas" - or the couple is shopping and he takes a camera-phone pix and sends to her phone and she has a look of "oh now I know what he really wants = a lincoln! - and I was going to get him this tie".... and trouble is alot of avg. people buy into the idea that THAT is how its supposed to be - and that if it isn't like that at your house you're somehow missing out......and then (yes yes) the bills start to roll in and (most people) are hurting. ppatty

LOL, I'm really not a Scrooge and I don't think any of you are either, but those car commercials are too much! And peppermint patty, somehow, someway I have been spared that Lincoln commercial, but what you describe here is guaranteed to make me hurl!

Has anyone else noticed a surge in commercial breaks on QVC and HSN?

peppermintpatty

Oh PandaGirl you're lucky to have been spared. We've seen it (Lincoln gingerbread cookie-hint commerical) while watching NFL mostly (Northern Calif) and it seems ludicrous - but all of the car/gift commercials seem ridiculous as do most of the (big) diamond-gift commericals. I'm all for it if you can afford it but alot of people ESPECIALLY during the holidays cannot afford the special stuff because of buying for others and donating to charities and entertaining (which gets expensive) etc etc. But you're right you're not a SCROOGE and me neither! Just maybe a "commercial-skeptic" (ha). The beer commericials are funny - the polar bears and penguins (COKE?) is cute, and tho' not Christmas = the "Caveman being stereotyped" GEICO commericials are very funny - there he is all preppy with his squash? racket @ the airport and he sees a foto of a caveman with the "so easy even a caveman could do it"....and he's so demoralized. lol ppatty

I love those caveman commercials! He is a stitch! My favorite is the cable tv show parody. What I bet happened is that the actor was so funny in the original, they just went with it and developed a campaign around him.

And those polar bears are cute, too.

As I said, I'm in the businss and am anything but a commercial-hater. Just a BAD commercial hater.

If my hubby ever dropped hints like that to suggest I should get him a car for Xmas, I'd laugh so hard I'd wet myself.

peppermintpatty
12-21-2006, 09:50 AM
Yes Tooncey2 - me too (wet myself). And then I'd ask him where his secret stash of $$$ that I don't know about is being hidden. Because I pay the bills and (I think) I know where all our $$$ is coming in and going out. He had an older mustang and a year ago he was lusting after the new Mustang body style (NOT AT CHRISTMAS TIME - THIS WAS IN BORING MARCH (no offense to "march lovers" I just mean not the glam Holiday Season), and I crunched the no.s and said "why don't you go trade in your old Mustang for the new body style - get it done before you retire". His eyes lit up and he said "really, can we really afford it"? And he got his "new body style" Mustang. Me - in 2 years I've gone from a Honda CRV to a Chevy Tahoe (they lied about the mileage), back to a Honda CRV and I "lust" after an Infinity 4-door coupe (not sure of modell) but - that will be in some other life - after many other bills are paid off. And not @ Christmas Time of that I'm sure. lol

Yes, they really do make those bows--I think they cost about $400 each.

Slight variation on the theme: We took my husband's car in to be serviced on December 24th a few years back and I saw a cobalt blue Honda CRV on the lot I fell in love with--and guess what Santa brought me? (Clearly the sign of a desperate man who has not yet shopped for his wife and had no desire to descend into the hell of the mall on Christmas Eve.)

P.S. No bow.

Curvi - do you still have the CRV? I really like mine. I liked the Tahoe - fit alot more people in for "road-trips" but oh no the gas guzzling...... so I'm back with a CRV and loving it. It "zips" around, easy to park, etc. etc. ~ pp

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my CRV. It's a 2000 (got it Christmas 1999) and I still think of it as my "new car," although it's starting to look a little boxy compared to the more up-to-date models. I'll keep it at least 10 years, and it will take a lot of convincing to get me to trade it in even then.

we had an '01 and me (ms dumass) wanted the tahoe and the rest is history and now I have an '06 and of course they changed the body style in '07 but I like my body style (of the CRV that is, lol) and I too will be keeping it for many years. Still feel foolish for trading in the other one.......live and learn and live again and learn again and finally - get it right? still trying. ppatty
