I got one that I can't even re-gift. It's a wooden cat pin and the back came off the first time I tried to wear it. It went into the trash.

Not this year, but a few ago, my SIL to me got me a trivet....It kind of upset me because I put a lot of thought into a gift for her...a trivet IMO is an add on gift at a bridal shower lol

I didn't receive these, but I know someone who did (and I've seen them)...
Used earrings. With the "crusties" left on the posts. Also, for good measure, a stray hair in the box.

My husband's aunt, the cheapest woman in the world, gave my MIL a used half slip once. The elastic was all stretched out. And she has buckets of money.

I love my family dearly, I really, truly do. But they have no idea what I like! My Aunt got me all these Chinese based things out of the Target Bins that you see when you come in the door. I got three Chinese takeout container hand bags (with the price of 2.50 on each!) and a Wine Bottle Kimono with a set of Wine Charms in Chinese Lettering. Great... but I don't drink. And if you do - I'll gladly let you know when I put it on Ebay LOL.. it's the thought though. She got them thinking of the three small Buddhas I have in my kitchen which were a gift from someone else.
Those are going in the re-gifting box, we should do a favorite gift thread - I would love to hear what everyone got! :o)

My SIL got me a scarf made out of little purple, orange, lime green and pink crocheted circles sewn together. When I opened it up my brain was screaming, WTF is this thing?!? I got HER Sarah Jessica Parker 'Lovely' body lotion, a beautiful Debbie Mum recipe keeper and a Mikasa crystal votive candle. ???

She still has them in the box (only so she can show them off! LOL) but I'm sure they'll be in the Dumpster by New Year's!

I'm curious....what was your reaction/response to these obviously used gifts? I'm all for grace and decorum, but I don't know that I would have been able to keep my wits about me if I opened a gift of used earrings with "crusties" on them.
I think the most civilized response I would have been able to muster would have been "Oh, I can't possibly keep these. It looks like you enjoyed wearing them so much." And then pressed the box firmly into their hand.

Good response to the earrings, Tooncey! I'm not sure what I would have done if I'd been the one who got them. Probably said, "You're kidding--right?" I didn't ask but I'm guessing the friend who did get them probably just thanked the person and tucked them away. Quickly.
Kitten, you should make that scarf into pot holders and give them back to your SIL next year!

My husband's grandmother gave me two used shirts one Christmas. At the time, I was only 29 and they were shinny polyester with flutter sleeves in a wild hawaiian print. That was bad enough...but then I noticed that had food stains all over the front. I doubt they were even washed before she gave them to me.

OMG This thread is DISGUSTINGLY delightful!!
Nothing bad this year.
Two Christmases ago - my sil gave me 9 different candleholders. None matched each other, they were very random. Two were cracked/broken. Some were attractive, some were drop-dead ugly. All still had ROSS tags on bottom or wherever on box. Was so bizarre (to me at least) that I urged us "adults" (from then on) not to exchange presents anymore @ Christmas (still do birthdays) and just do the kiddies and everyone seemed to be happy with that plan. And I threw 2 in trash, put 5 of the 9 in our spring garage sale. And 2 sit happily ever after on my patio table. ppatty

this thread reminds me of National Lampoon Christmas Vacation and the crazy aunt who wrapped up strange things, including her cat. lol!

Kitty - Yes you're right this thread does sound like that movie. What a great movie. She wrapped a jello salad and her cat - who later came to an untimely ending due to a christmas-tree lighting mishap - right? lol, ppatty

SO glad to hear that I am not the only one who is surrounded by wealthy-but-cheap people. I won't mention any names but I actually received an oyster shell (the oyster being eaten the night before by this individual) who wrapped it in cellophane and claimed that there were tiny 'seed pearls' in it. Needless to say, there weren't and even if there WERE, I found the entire incident "beyond ignorant" and was left speechless. This person is so good-hearted, but their lack of generosity never ceases to amaze or disappoint me.

That's disgusting Sparks! So are the crusty earrings ... bleck! What are people thinking?!? A person could go to TJ or Big Lots or Marshalls, and get a decent gift for under $10, one that people wouldn't be insulted/disguted by! I'm really shocked to hear these kind of stories ... when it seems the whole world has gone designer label crazy!

Sparks! I have a scathingly brilliant idea. I'll get my friend to send you her earrings (I'm not touching them with a 10 foot pole), and you can put them in your oyster shell (I recommend using a two-ply tissue, followed up with a thorough hand-washing), and submit them to QVC's product development department. Whaddaya think?

Instead of complaining about so-called 'worst gifts', why not just stop, reflect, and be grateful that you were remembered to begin with!
Goodness! HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE GRATEFUL TO BE REMEMBERED TO BEGIN WITH!

Who would be grateful to be "remembered" by someone who put absolutely no thought or feeling into your gift?
I'd much rather be "forgotten" by someone who would gift me with disgusting used earrings or an oyster shell!

Thanks Tooncey2 and Vivvie~ My feeling is that I would much prefer to receive nothing at all rather than be presented with a gift that is SO pathetic. It's just insulting.
