In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th, 2007, all Internet users are being urged not to purchase gas on this day in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the Internet network, and the average car takes about $30 to $50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on May 15th, it would take almost $3 BILLION out of the oil companies pockets for just one day. So PLEASE, do not go to the gas station on May 15th and let's try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree, which I hope you do, please tell your friends and have them pass the word too.

This doesn't make sense to me. The gas will show a mark up May 14 and May 16, which evens out.

Gas is 3.29-3.59 here!

Veritas:

A little common sense would dictate that you fill up your car a few days before, or if you take public transportation, and you do not use your car as often, the week before. Everyone would then be filling their cars up at different times. Ergo, there would not be a spike the day before or after the 15th!

If you do not want to participate, don't. It has been done before and it did work.

This is being asked, not by me personally, but rather by concerned individuals who are trying to help all of us consumers get gas prices back to a reasonable cost.

It amazes me how some individuals on this board have to constantly look for faults in a thread. The point of this was to try to make a difference, but as I should have expected, it is met with disparagement. Personally, I would suggest that all Americans boycott the pumps for a week or more, because I, along with other concerned individuals, are fed up with the way things are going in this country. Just look how the victims of Katrina were forgotten. There are thousands of new trailers sitting idle that never reached their intended recipients, millions of donated dollars that can't be located, meanwhile thousands are still waiting for help. How many jobs are lost every year due to outsourcing, the list just goes on & on. What do you propose we do? Sit back & keep doing nothing? I'd like to believe there are still some altruistic people out there.

I have to ask those of you who love to criticize, what should we as law abiding, tax paying citizens do? I would really like to hear some "intelligent and constructive" ideas.

And for those of you who are compelled to discredit me, I did not come up with this idea, I am just passing it along. I do believe it will make a difference. Forgive me for trying to suggest it to the people on this board, I should have known it would meet with vicious criticism.

Pebbles, do you have any intelligent suggestions as to what the American people can do to help bring gas prices down? Really, I'm interested in hearing your views on this topic, not about an urban legend.
And, I have written my congressman on several issues I felt strongly about, and you know what, nothing ever gets done.

You know, I have to agree with you about how difficult it is to get anything to change. I have written and emailed my reps and I get responses. They agree with me and they are trying to do something to change the situation, but they are not in the majority. Please keep in mind, that we have an oilman in the White House with strong ties to Saudi Arabia. This administration is strongly pro business and the corporations, including Big Oil, make huge contributions. They can afford to lobby our senators and congressional reps with what amounts to bribes. The more we pay for gas, the more money the oil lobby has to throw around. And I'm sure you've heard about those "golden parachutes" the CEO'sof corporations get when they step down. Millions of dollars are given to them as a pay-out.
The only solution I can see is to be your own lobbyist and tell your friends to do the same. Stay in touch with your reps. Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. If it makes you feel better to boycott, go right ahead. It may not help, but it couldn't hurt. Most importantly, vote the bastards out and demand new laws to stop or restrict lobbying. It should be unconstitutional. But here again, the new Supreme Court appointees reflect the views of the person who appointed them. Need I say more?

Let me add, that we have the technology to switch to cheaper and less polluting fuels, but the car makers are dragging their feet on that front. Let's write to them, too. I for one will buy an energy efficient car the next time I buy. Let's all do that and send a message. There is strength in numbers.

You have the most supercilious of any poster I read, Hershey. You should get over yourself, stop acting as though you are the "be all and end all" on this board and end the criticism. All I did was say that many others criticise (example: your post), and if anyone had a better idea, post it. I fail to see what's wrong with that--although you'll probably tell me.......

And on the subject of the original topic:

Thanks for posting this, Veritas. It's true this has been going around for a while, but it's still of benefit. It's a reminder as we go through our busy, distracting days that we as a people are ultimately responsible for what has happened to this country (our own dependence on our creature comforts enables our ability to "look the other way" when bad things are happening). Every time we see something like this posted, a percentage of people (albeit small) will think of things they can personally do to contribute to the cure instead of feeding the disease. And even a small step forward is...a step forward!

Rhubarb
05-12-2007, 08:48 AM
The only way gas is going to come down is if demand is down, that's the way the economy works, supply and demand. I remember the last "gas out", and no, gas did not come down 30 cents. People just filled up the day before and day after. Car manufacturers need to work on alternative fuels to get us around instead of gasoline. In addition, I know at least in Southern California, mass transit needs to be desperately improved. We have the metrolink, but it doesn't serve enough places. In Portland, they have a tremendous bus service which you don't have to wait for hours. A bus comes along almost every 10 minutes and thousands of people use it. That would be nice in other metropolitan places.
