Evangelist Jerry Falwell died Tuesday after he was found unresponsive in his office, an official at Liberty University told CNN.
Falwell, 73, was rushed to a Lynchburg, Virginia, hospital, where he was given CPR.
Falwell founded the Moral Majority in 1979 and is a nationally known voice for conservative Christian views. (Watch Jerry Falwell's rise to fame )
In 1956, the 22-year-old minister started Thomas Road Baptist Church with just 35 members, according to his Web site. The church now has more than 24,000 members.
Shortly after starting the Lynchburg church, Falwell began broadcasting the "Old Time Gospel Hour" radio and television ministries.
He founded Liberty University in 1971.
Falwell has found himself at the center of several controversies, such as the one sparked by his comments two days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in which he seemed to blame "abortionists," gays, lesbians, the ACLU and People for American Way for causing the attacks, saying they "helped this happen."
On September 14, 2001, he told CNN that he would "never blame any human being except the terrorists, and if I left that impression with gays or lesbians or anyone else, I apologize."
Falwell was hospitalized twice in early 2005 with acute onset pulmonary edema, or congestive heart failure, and at one point was placed on a ventilator.
He and his wife, Macel, have three children.

I'm sorry to hear that Jerry Falwell has died, as I would be sorry to learn that anyone had passed away. I found him to be very opinionated and abrasive--yet, he dedicated his life to the service of God, and I wish his family well during this terrible time for them.

Jerry Falwell was quite obese, so it was hardly shocking news.
He could be very controversial with his views. I remember when he was mixed up in the whole Jim Bakker/Jessica Hahn scandal, and I've read Jim Bakker's comments that he felt that Falwell betrayed him in the worst way re: his "ministry". Now THAT was the pot calling the kettle black. I wonder how they measure who's worse, morally speaking.

Back in the Reagan era, Rev. Jerry was the voice of reason with the Moral Majority. I didn't agree with his conservative politics, but I truly believed he was sincere. I think he went over the edge back in the 90's. When he said that 9/11 was a punishment for all the gays and lesbians, he truly lost it for me. I think this was a sad ending for someone who meant well in the beginning.

I found Larry King Live very interesting last night.
They had on everyone from Tammy Faye to Rev. Ron White (a homosexual pastor who once worked w/Falwell), and included an interview with Larry Flynt (Hustler magazine) and Falwell.
I agree with Franklin Graham's statement that while JF erred in some of his earlier views and admitted it, he was sincere and not easily moved in his beliefs.
The person I found most irritating and who came off as being very smug, was Rev. Robert Schuller. I have never liked him, and his vascillating viewpoints, that often change to fit the occasion. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Don't be too hard on him, Pebbles...it's obvious he skipped his last doctor's appointment and has been off his meds for a while...

That's interesting advice from you, Curvigirl. You almost always respond to the trolls.

Maybe the wild weather we have been having today in the northeast uprooted all the trolls...lol

No, Hershey, I don't "almost always" respond to trolls. I do occasionally, but more often than not I don't. In fact, I recall PMs between the two of us where we agreed sometimes neither of us can resist. However, I confess, I do fall into the trap more often than you do.
Congratulations!

I agree with you, Curvigirl...sometimes the stupidity of certain posts just begs a response!
