speaking of lighting gems
the morganite scam is my other favorite
i love when they tell us how the newer morganites are hugely and brilliantly pink
but if you watch as they move the stone to the hand, it goes right back to being the same lovely pink peach and brown color that all morganite really is
it's really quite interesting
they usually do this with the madagascar stuff, saying it is somehow better than brazilian
maybe it is but uf it's hot pink, it's not morganite unless it's been lit up to perform a stunt

Lighting varies from studio camera to studio camera. Different lights are used in the "light box" than the ones hanging above the show desk. It is a different type of light.
The ones above the "light-box" are the small ARRI fresnel variety with barn-doors attached and no gels.
While the larger ARRIs can be found above the show as well, they are primarily lit with a Videssence flourescent type light. The videssece lights are of the same variety used on most tv news sets. They are "fill" light that is much cooler in temperature.
No "tricks" or "performance" light. I hate to disappoint.

you don't have to trick light to get a different effect
you can use ordinary light to create an effect on camera
you are mighty defensive
fx are fx, even if they are achieved with what's in the studio that everyone other studio has
that this station may have a few more geniuses of lighting than others, is sort of obvious
i don't want my morganite to be hot pink
i want it to be morganite color
so please stop with the fx

No "fx" or effects are used.
You are seeing studio "white light"
Occassionally one of the aforementioned ARRI lights will put off a tinge of yellow before it blows.....but once that happens the bulb is replaced since it doesnt last long afterward. It is usually caused by a moron production assistant having touched the bulb with their bare-hands. Not calling anyone a moron, but the act in itself is moronic. It is learned in studio production 101! LOL
As you mentioned, you half-way quoted Chris as saying there were 15 different light sources in the studio. I'm sure he was just tossing out a number but he was wrong....there are probably 30= different "sources"....but all of them are typical studio lighting as mentioned earlier.
The only time a "special" light is used for effect is when alexadrite(sp) is shown. It is deliberate and it is announced. Alex, as you may be aware, is a color change stone and it is done to mimic the effect of sunlight or other light to show the color change.
This change can not be shown in normal studio lighting to the camera much less viewers without the use of secondary lighting.
This isnt a trick and viewers are made aware of the light change when it happens.

of course i want to see alex change, and want to see how much it changes
on the whole, it's not my favorite color change rock so that's ok too
you will however have to explain then, why if the light source is constant (i assume you are suggesting same when you say typical studio lighting) almost every single stone changes color (varied degrees) when shown on the turntable vs finger, (true of jewelry and gems both)
i've already given the morganite example, but i see this routinely on nearly every stone, but there should be a constant if the light source is the same throughout
If it is the same source, the same effects should show
they never do
and if they are the same source, then why is the red spot visible on the left in every shot of tanzanite, champagne diamonds and abuot 80 percent of the stones. when moved to hand, the red lightbulb reflection suddenly disappears.
It's almost always red and red in cases on rocks that shouldn't shoot a red
it's obviously a reflection of a bulb and it makes me irritated because I can't see the quality or cut of the stone due to the reflection.
It appears in about 80 percent of the shows/
On the other 20 percent, it's a white light. Sometimes it is lit correctly so as not to distract
other times, the "white lighting" is so overdone as to (no seriously not an exaggeration) give me vertigo. GEms stones on the loose -- dawn and tommie - both shows were just too bright.
If you have any influence in that studio could you please tell them to correct the lighting, it's hard to watch this and it's not possible to decide that a stone is one you want when its overlit or lit oddly - at least, it puts me off buying it
I watched hsn today -- exotics. They had a morganite they swore was so DIFFERENT from the traditional pink
peach she said, it's peach, she said it a bazillion times
the thing was pink (and I might add visibly included)
it's obviously not just jtv, the reddish pink lighting whatever the source simply makes me mistrust the seller and say no

"you will however have to explain then, why if the light source is constant (i assume you are suggesting same when you say typical studio lighting) almost every single stone changes color (varied degrees) when shown on the turntable vs finger, (true of jewelry and gems both)"
***Depending on the set....the turntable sits at arms length to the show at one end of the shows desk. When you are seeing a hand-shot, it is being lighted only by the videssence type light above the hosts head, where as the turntable is lighted by a tiny 5k ARRI spotlight suspended by a gaffers stand. Both cases.....are white light and are not "special" in any way.
Honest to goodness you are looking for something that just isn't there.

I know I posted it here somewhere (probably about 2 years ago), but I was watching a tanzanite show, and I saw the light change as they were taking one stone off and another one on. Clearly, they were using some sort of light filter for one stone over another.

either they are the same and therefore uniform lighting or they are not
If I went out in the sun twice, within 3 seconds, I should get the same exact lighting/shot
but you are telling me that it's not the same sun
honestly it can't be both (unless you are going to preach some obscure zen optics theory and tell me it's quantum and light travels in packets and waves both and therefore based on the fourrier transform and the feynman diagram where you lost an electron but you'd be full of soup)
I am not looking for something that just isn't there
I am seeing something that is PATENTLY there
I saw them switch the light in one discrete shot this weekend. I don't watch so much as listen til I know I am interested in a product whereupon I watch intently.
In this particular instance you could see it going from brighter to not as bright. It's so obvious. It's like they are rapidly flicking a dimmer switch. caught in mid act. oops
I also patently see a light bulb reflection in 80 percent of the shots top left, that is a distinctively different color and shape than any of the other reflected beams/lightbulbs from any other part of the stone. It's consistent. It's exactly the same spot on every stone and every shot in 80 percent of the stones that reflect such things. On occasion I see it in the tweezers, in the white of the table and even on the hands of the hosts.
It's annoying to look at.
It's there. I am not looking for it, It's there. It's distracting.

as a ps
it is NOT my tv set. I have had more than one over the past ten years. I have seen the same thing in hotel rooms, friends sets, my set.
There's no question jtv competitors use even more deceptive lighting
but this thing on the left hand side is there, and is apparent in a huge percentage of the gem show shots
the jewelry shots have their own issues, but the gem show shots have prevented me from buying for a good 7 years.
that's really bad considering i had been purchasing more frequently way back when
I lack confidence due to the lighting problems
i know what color the stone should be. on tv it doesn't look like what it should look like

After reading a lot of your posts I dont think you know your ass from a hole in the ground!
No one ever wants to admit they may not know something and they are the absolute most knowlegable.....of course it is impossible it is your set.
Color change can vary, even by what the hosts are wearing.....one night Tommy was wearing a salmon colored tie....it repeatedly caused tanzy to have pops of red flashes.
It was a reflection.....not special lighting.
Most of you have no clue about JTV, its hosts, or how it does its production, or anything......but you propose to know everything!

The hellI care about Tommy's salmon tie. If you were more professional then you wouldn;t let the tie get in the shot to distort the color.
And you wouldn't allow color to vary so very whimsically
I know one thing that's more important than any thing you have challenged.
I don't propose to know anything except the following:
It's my money and I can spend it where I want
And if JTV can't convince me that they are showing true color, they can't get my money.
Is that knowledge meaningful to jtv?
you've seen the other posters get annoyed by poor quality, deceptive lighting and other unfair sales gimmicks.
For every person that posted about their dissastisfaction, there's likely to be others who don't know this board exists.
So I know that JTV cash needs our cash. I can distinguish that fact from both my asshole and the hole in the ground.
No matter how hard you try to convince us that JTV doesn't need our cash, we know better. You need our cash.
So Inda Know, if that is in fact your real name, I'd advise you and JTV to find something else if they want to stay in business. Because I know if we aren't willing to spend our cash with this station, then they will have to find something else.
If you are an employee of JTV, then kindly use your real name for accountability. Otherwise your credibility in arguing JTVs side of the issue is nil

Obviously Kilo and Inda are show hosts....
I notice the iris change a lot, but not so much with the lighting.
Since the topic is pink morganite, I was wondering what discerning differences there are between morganite and kunzite and if it's possible to confuse kunzite with Rose de France Amethyst?
kilo3_6

I am definitely not a show!
And I doubt "Inda" is a show either......I cant imagine a show host having that kind of attitude that is displayed in their posts.
Iris changes are made throughout the shows since camera angles and positioning under the various lights change. (no "special lighting") Also.....you cant just go from a white tray to a black velvet roll without an iris adjustment.
Also......a white-balance may be required as well.
Both a white-balance and an iris adjustment is made on the production floor by the cam operator. Not the case in every broadcast facility but this IS the case at JTV.

these are changes in an of themselves
yes these are simple changes that enhance or detract from the picture, and in some cases may be necessary
but they are lighting changes that can easily be used to trick the eye
unless you personally work in the studio, and state your name, then you don't really know and can't really know what jtv does it its studio, beyond a limited experience that you have admitted to
if you scan the customer reviews on the website, the one thing that really resonates is the amount of dissatisfaction the customers have with the tanzanites, all related to lack of color, or color not as shown on tv
there are other problems with other stones, but since jtv probably sells more tanzanite than anything else, the lighting issue becomes most prominent on reviews of these products/
sure it's a small sample of the overall sales, but it's a revealing sample
that demonstrates further that lighting tricks are employed to make people believe the stones are a color they are not.

***An Iris adjustment is a change....but it is an adjustment of how much light is allowed into the camera. It would effect brightness of a stone...but it would also effect the brightness of the entire picture, i.e. the show hosts hand, the velvet roll, the table, the tray, etc. EVERYTHING in site would be light/dark. Not just the stone or piece. You cant "pin-point" the iris control.
White Balance is done before productioin starts on a set. It sets the color of white and theory the entire color spectum based on the fact that true white has the same color temperature thru-out the spectrum. These settings are factory set and cant be changed. If they are somehow changed, it would effect the entire camera and it would not hold any color accurately. In turn.......effecting all colors. The entire shot would be effected.....show hosts hands, trays, velvet.....you get the picture.
yes these are simple changes that enhance or detract from the picture, and in some cases may be necessary
***Once again.....these changes effect the entire picture and cant be pinpointed. Entire picture. Entire picture........not just the stone.
but they are lighting changes that can easily be used to trick the eye
***No they arent. Why is it so hard for you to just question the fact that you just might not be right?
unless you personally work in the studio, and state your name, then you don't really know and can't really know what jtv does it its studio, beyond a limited experience that you have admitted to
***Once again......I have a right to my anonymity just like anyone else here.
You have NO CLUE what I know, where I work/have worked, or the limitations of my experience. For you to assume otherwise, based purely on the fact that I wont reveal myself....is one of the most stupid and asinine things I have ever heard. I hate to say it....but this is one thing I agree with the "inda know" person on.
Why dont you post your real name and where you work and let us decide why you are such a TV/jewelry expert?
if you scan the customer reviews on the website, the one thing that really resonates is the amount of dissatisfaction the customers have with the tanzanites, all related to lack of color, or color not as shown on tv
*** Do you even think it is possible to show every single piece? Do you think that everyone shopping has a perfect TV set, screen, monitor showing 100% color correction? So many reasons why. How many of those making complaints want to admit to the possibility that there viewing apparatus could be less than perfect. I'd say some of those complaining may even have BW sets as well......its possible.
there are other problems with other stones, but since jtv probably sells more tanzanite than anything else, the lighting issue becomes most prominent on reviews of these products/
***Please tell me the amounts that JTV sells of one product over the other. Oh wait.....you dont have those numbers? Oh thats right......once again.....presumptions and assumptions.
sure it's a small sample of the overall sales, but it's a revealing sample
***Once again.....please show the numbers of your total "sample".
Were talking about a buisness here. Show the numbers of your "claim". At least give yourself some credibility and some cement to stand on.
that demonstrates further that lighting tricks are employed to make people believe the stones are a color they are not.
***Please show me exactly where you have demonstrated this FACT.
Please PROVE your theory.
You cant becuase it isnt there.
You are looking for a sasquach or the Loch Ness Monster.

That's how they are... accomodating. If they get it wrong the first time somehow, they WILL try to fix it.
MK, what does "MK" stand for? I mean name wise?
Mystylady is the name I chose when I first signed online in 1994, on AOL. Get this... the baud rate was... 9400!!!

Hey Mysty
I've said it before, I have had some great purchases at acnt/jtv and some really bad ones.
The thing that bothers me is when people hear stuff and get taken in. So I intend to post about those things so people make wiser purchases and not make the same mistakes i did
mk is just my initials
maria for the first name
my first baud rate was even lower than that. Lived in an area that the internet didn't come to for a while
i'm totally nobody so there's nothing to reveal
The only real stress in my life right now is that I am in the middle of a move, bought a new place have to move out of my old one. get tv, get internet, get a computer, had to put down a huge amounot of money to afford a place in dc. i have to grab internet access from a business center.
this was a scary investment. it's probably my 5th or 6th move -- related to work -- in the last 2 years or so. i forget how many moves i have had.
And hopefully this is the permanent one for a few years. It gets harder and harder to move.
I'd be happier with JTV if they cut the bull. i've said it before and I'll say gain. the product isn't any worse than anyof the other channels. I just can't stand sales tactics. I just want to know the cut and dry of it.
If others want to challenge me and tell me that i'm wrong they can do it
I'm not stopping them.
It's their stress and de-funning, not mine
i haven't had any evidence from anyone showing me that I am wrong other than uncommitted allegations from nameless people with handles
(how do i even know that email was from angela? anybody can pretend to be anyone on the net. would she be willing to let me sit in the studio for a day and watch? Instead of a guided tour. I doubt it)

kilo thanks for your lengthy post.
I don't have i9nternet access for a while and only short term access when I am in. Perhaps I will answer this later when I can
here is my simple answer to at least one of the statements you made
You said this and similar things of this nature:
<< It would effect brightness of a stone...but it would also effect the brightness of the entire picture, i.e. the show hosts hand, the velvet roll, the table, the tray, etc. EVERYTHING in site would be light/dark.>>
I've edited the rest of the post out just to save space
the truth of the matter is that I do see exactly that quite perceptible changes in the entire picture.
constantly.
the picture changes from -- for lack of better term
studio, close up shot on velvet, turntable (2 kinds one is the larger one is the little one for gems)
I see that when you close up for those velvet and turntable shots that when you do tanzanite vs say peridot, the hude/light/contrast
whatever you want to call it
changes
The whole picture
just as you say.
I don't have access, but one day, based on your challenge, I will make you a log that shows exactly what i mean
thanks
