Linda,
Your stuffing sounds very much like mine! But I also put craisins in mine for a bit of sweetness. That jello thingy sounds really good!
I also make a good sweet potato casserole!

Hey Tinker!

Do you happen to be of the Polish/German persuasion? Seems ppl of those two nationalities seem to favor the sausage stuffing.

The jello thingy IS scrumptious! I mix some black cherry jello with sour cream and whipped cream for one of the layers and it's to die for!

Sweet potato casserole. Sounds good. What's in it??

I like the basics... and I would never change my stuffing. It's killer.

Last year, we wanted to do something a little different, so we made homemade pumpkin pie icecream ... it was really good!

My sausage stuffing recipe comes down through the family so the Italians must like it also. I am allowed to make this once a year - we call it the Killer dressing - there is enough cholesterol in that recipe that your system can only take it once a year! :-)

Hey Rebel Mom!

My BIL's Italian, as was my Stepfather, and they make/made stuffing with either apples or chestnuts in it. Hmmm. Well, the sausage stuffing IS yummy, is it not???

I would say if you absolutely can't handle the spinach, then leave it out & prepare the recipe as is, maybe with just one more potato to make the difference so it won't be too thin. You could add a tsp. or so of chives, but not too much. It should still be tasty, just will be a potato and herb casserole. :-)

Everybody loves my Thanksgiving cooking, so I get elected to host it a lot, like this year. I also like the basics, like Tina, but some of my specialities are my boiling onions in cheese sauce, my mashed potatoes (I use Half and Half on holidays, instead of milk) and my pumpkin pies (again; I substitute Half and Half for the condensed milk).

I like regular sage dressing, like my mom made. I have always wanted to dry chestnut stuffing though.

Hi Linda, my specialty this year is making the rounds and getting a full tummy:) LOL!

I do bring my crab dip and some candles as a Thank you gift, but with such a hectic time right now. Visiting everyone else is working just fine with us.

Although I miss all the leftovers and the warm cooking smells in the house. By next week my waistline will thank me of it!

If anyone has some leftover fudge or stuffing.......mail it to me now. Oh, maybe a little gravy:) Heck, throw in some pie. If you have any left. What the heck. Anyone make spiral ham? I'll take some of that too.

I once bought Stove Top Stuffing in the red box (what a timesaver and I added some fresh cranberries ). I was only making a tiny bird on a regular day for just two.

Mr. Sam loved it !!

lol

(okay, so I won't serve it or even think of attempting this short cut on any official holiday)

I've tried Stovetop, and I guess it could work in a pinch...........but, the one I make is so fast and easy, if I'm going to make stuffing, I'd prefer that one.

Here's the recipe.........just in case! :D

1 1lb. roll Bob Evans Sage sausage
2 lg. bags seasoned stuffing cubes
4-5 celery stalks, diced
1 large onion, diced
2 eggs
poultry seasoning, sage, pepper
warm water, or turkey broth, if you prefer

Brown sausage with celery and onions, cooking well. Drain. In a large pot, mix stuffing cubes, sausage/celery/onions, eggs, poultry seasoning, pepper, sage, to taste. Add warm water, maybe 1/2 cup at a time, until stuffing holds together. Don't add TOO much, or it'll be mushy. You can also throw in chestnuts, cranberries, walnuts, or mushrooms, if you like. Stuff bird.

If leftover, put in a greased casserole dish, throw on a little prepared gravy, and bake at 350 for about 35-40 mins. YUMMY!

Linda Lou that recipe sounds delicious. I have not seen the Bob Evans sausages on sale where I live I bet it's yummy. I use Jones sausage and Bell's Stuffing mix ,chicken broth, onions & eggs.

I love sausages, I am of Italian descent which might be a factor, lol.

My mom used to make sage dressing for the rest of us and one pan of oyster dressing for my grandpa. He was the only one who liked it. LOL

LindaLou, my dressing is pretty much the same as your's; sans the sausage.

& no never tried mashed potatoes from a box. (don't even like mashed potatoes) however, I am guilty of the scalloped pototatoes out of a package !!! ....very tasty indeed !

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

YUMMY!

Linda Lou-I make my stuffing the same way except I use Jimmy Dean sausage and also use chicken broth for the liquid. This year I also added cranberries. YUM!

Linda,

Your stuffing recipe is very similar to mine, except I also add a stick of melted butter, two cups of milk and about half a box or so (basically pour until you sneeze) of Bell's Poultry Seasoning. I stuff what I can in the turkey and then put the rest in a coverec casserole dish with some additional chicken broth to keep it moist while it bakes. Wonderful dish, but keep the antacids handy!

Doesn't anyone use the giblets in their dressing?!.....

Me_Kali

Kitten, I don't. I think my mom used to, or I know she used them in the gravy. I don't use them at all, even though I liked her's.

I actually don't use them either. I'm not even sure what parts "giblets" really are...probably don't even want to know! But they sure taste good in my mom's and dad's dressing.

Hey guys.......it seems like some of us make basically the same kind of stuffing, with a few variations...........though Rebel Mom, I have to say that adding a stick of butter to the sausage is um......making my arteries clog as we speak! lol

Actually, my Mother used to do the same, but really, the fat from the sausage is more than enough for me! :D

That was a fun thread to read.

My specialty is pumpkin cheesecake, I finally perfected it a couple years ago.

And my OUT of the Bird stuffing is always popular. *I have NO problem using stove top, its JUST bread dried and broken up. I use the seasoning packet too.. I use the GARLIC flavor, as I hate working wtih real garlic.
I add a can of jellied cranberry (melted) and a cube of butter and Vegtable broth. Also sausage, celery, onion..

I baked pumpkin bread pudding inside a pumpkin, and it was kinda bland so I made a carmel sauce and poured it inside... and it became real sweet and I got lots of compliments.. so that was the first time I ever made such a thing.

I made so many things this year, as I was helping my sister, who hosted the party at her house.

I made: Besides the above

Cranberry orange nut muffins with a sugar crusty top
Peanut butter bars, with frosting and candy corn.
Pear and cranberry crisp

Regular pumpkin pie.
Apple pie. Came out like Apple goo
Turkey cookies.. made with cookies and candy.
Fruit salad

Potatoe salad, my sister wanted it, I thought it was not appropriate for thanksgiving, lol.
I make it by using resers potatoe salad and adding some mashed potatoes and sauces, relish, onion, lots more eggs, relish, red pepper and olives.

I'm surprised at all the people who say they use sausage. That's something I've never really heard of here.

Giblets are the heart and liver, I think, Kitten. And I would never use sausage either. I'm just not a sausage lover at all. :/

Girl, all of that sounds good. Glad your party at your sister's turned out well.

You know, I think this is the first I've ever heard of people putting sausage in the stuffing as well.

My sister in law puts dried apricots in her's. Yuck.

I don't think I could do sausage, either.

But I do use raisins in my stuffing. It adds a touch of sweetness, and everyone loves it.

Girl, you're still excited, aren't you?!! LOL I'm glad you had a good time!
Bet you can't wait for Christmas! I can........ buh hum bug.

Cranberry chutney. We have several diabetics in the family and we make this as an alternative to the sugar-filled cranberry sauce. The chutney consists of whole cranberries, diced pears, diced apples, cinnamon, cloves, cider, walnets and Splenda. It's better than anything made by Ocean Spray.

i won't cook foods that stay in the colon for six months or more. stuffing & dressing are bad for the digestive system. turkey is a healthy alternative for red meat. red meat stays in the digestive system for several months. it takes a long time for white breads & red meats to break down.

sugar is a definite no-no in our home. sugar - premature ages - raises triglycerides - affects immune system. home made chutney with splenda is a good suggestion. thanksgiving was...steamed organic vegetables...turkey stuffed with lemon - orange - fresh herbs...home made whole wheat rolls with sweet cream butter. dessert was fruit compote with fresh whip topping.
