How do you like it? Would you buy one again? Pros and cons?

Sadly I have to give up my perfect gas range... But I am really leaning to the old fashioned coil variety...

Two friends locally, give them a thumbs down... An equal number give them a thumbs up... All related to cleaning the top and the cookware you can use, efficiently...

I have a large double burner grill, but it has a raised center section...

And can you use cast iron on it... Not the porcelain cast iron (I have heard it 'melts'???), just the plain old garden variety smooth bottomed cast iron...

;0))

Oh shoot...

I can't believe you can't make your 'perfect range' work...hummm.

I prefer gas. I used to have electric in our old apartment when we were living in San Francisco that was almost 10years ago. I don't even know how they work now. LOL

Hey, Jinh...

Isn't it the pits, LOL....

We we first going to take it, and either pipe in Natural gas, or pipe propane... But, I got to thinking...

I was perfectly happy with an electric coil range for at least 30 years, (Hah, I burn just as much stuff on propane as I did electric...), and my major complaint with gas was the slow heating burners...

The original thought was to get a radiant for ease of cleaning... Then I heard it was nasty to clean if you did a lot of frying... I know, "perfect gas range", is a chore, having to remove all three grates and then clean the porcelain top...

At least I know the pits and falls (LOL, or pitfalls...) of the original beast, and have no idea about the radiants...

Unless someone has the nerve to post here and give their opinion on the radiants, I will go with the old reliables...

Yeah, Imee...

I like the gas for the precision of the burners... I cursed the electric range when doing pressure canning, cause the burners weren't responsive enough...

But those days are behind me...

PK, I much prefer gas too for that very reason. I hate how the electric burners are slow to respond. I used to end up with stuff all over the top of the range, with gas it is instant.

I don't know what the manufacturers recommend but I'd be afraid to use cast iron pots on my radiant top...the surface seems too fragile. My regular frying pans have already caused some scratches....

I have the electric coil type range up North. Down South, our first house had the glass top electric range (GE, I think). New house we built a couple of years ago down South, we have a six burner Wolf gas. We sunk a big propane tank which services the range, the outside kitchen and the outside fireplace. Out of all my ranges, I like gas the best. The electric I have up North is okay, too, but I like turning the heat off and having the heat be off. My least favorite was the glass top range we had at our last home down South. I couldn't do a good stir fry because it seemed to cycle itself down whenever it thought it was too hot. I also was afraid to use cast iron since I thought it might scratch. I had to buy new pots and pans because with the smooth top ranges, your pots and pans should be perfectly flat and mine weren't. It was also a PITA to clean, but I think that's true with most ranges when you do serious cooking.

Oh, another thing, if you do get a glass top, be very careful with lids. If you put them down on a hot glass top it can get stuck (becomes "vacuumed") and if you try to force the lid up you can crack your glass top. Happened to a friend of mine -- if a lid should get stuck, let it cool first and it can then be easily removed.

I didn't know that about the lids. Thanks for the heads up, Portia. I've had a radiant range for 3 or 4 yrs now, and I love mine! I could use a couple new pans, but I like that it's so easy to clean. There have been times when I've been impatient because it seems to shut off or turn down when I wanted it to hurry up, as described by others. Someone I know who has a black top told me they show soil worse. Mine is white with blue grey specks, and it still looks really nice.

The one I had was black and it did show everything. I'll bet the lighter tops would be better. My husband is the pancake maker in the house and it used to drive him crazy when it would cycle down on him -- we fixed that problem by buying an electric fry pan for the pancakes!

Thanks, everybody!!

I'm sorta thinking I will stick with my original decision, even the glass tops are so great looking, and sound so good in principle...

I still remember dropping the cast iron skillet on my gas range and knocking a giant chip out of the porcelain... Klutz, probably should NOT have a glass top... And I would be sliding stuff out of the way all the time, it would look like a wreck in no time, I fear...

I'll not stop canning, so the slow heating of large pans of water, may be the biggest minus... That was something I was unaware of...

Of course as I said on the other thread, I will most likely change my mind a dozen times before the deed is done...

Bumping for CindyLoo...

Cindy, here's the one we bought... I looked at all the models and makes Sears sold, and this one seemed the most bang for our buck... There some a little more, and little less... I think this one comes in "sorta" two versions... The only difference being the wattage of the oven and broiler units... Perhaps that has something to do with the breaker size for your stove...

Thanks PK, I'll check it out.

I'm thinking I better stick with the coil type. I do most of my cooking with cast iron. I'm one of those old fashioned cast iron cookers...lol

I love cast iron.

Me, too, Cindy, but sold it all at auction, rather than move it, LOL... My 11" Griswold skillet sold for $150... Seemed the stuff kept getting heavier and heavier... Curious, isn't it... Hah!

Scoops, I think they ARE making the glass tops so much more durable probably. I know stoves can take a beating.

Wow PK...150 buckaroos? I need to go searching through my cupboards..lol

I have one very large iron skillet and I can't BEGIN to lift that thing. It takes two to lift it out of the oven.

Oh...I went and seen the stove on the link and it's a very nice looking stove. Good price too, I think.

Mine I have now, has a black glass oven door and it's so nice and good looking. I took good care of it and it really looks like new. I hate that it's junk now...):

Cindy, have you looked into replacing the bad parts for your stove? I know you can get replacement coils for all brands, and think with a little looking you could find what you need to get it operating properly...

It's a shame to have to replace it, if you really like it...

Is the problem with the coils, or what the coils slide into? What brand is it?

The range I left in Cabool was a gas range in black with one honking big burner, and three others of various BTUs, plus a three part center griddle burner. It had the full top burner grates with a griddle insert for the center section.

I thought I would miss it terribly, but that is not the case... There is so much wasted heat that comes out around the pots with gas, even with the burner turned lower... The big honking burner with a large pot on it managed to melt a big spot in my down vest because the flame followed out around the pot...

We originally planned on running the natural gas line, but since we couldn't pipe it to the fireplace, too, we said the heck with it, not worth the expense... Now I'm very glad we didn't...

PK, yes we thought of replacing the burners, but my large burner is completely broken inside. I think I'd rather have a new stove. I'm ready for something new.

The one I have is a Whirlpool. I went shopping and looked around some today, just getting an idea. Didn't buy yet. I think I'll go with the coil ones. They're good looking, although those glass tops are REALLY nice, but I think for us, coil would be better.

I keep forgetting its there lol

No more storing baking sheets in the oven anymore :)

PK...

And if you want to spend a few bucks more, that bottom drawer can be a warming drawer...

(The new gas ranges have a storage drawer... The broiler is now in the top... And the electronic ignition prevents those singed eyebrows...)

Gas stoves don't have a storage drawer?? I never knew that. I have always had an electric stove. When we moved into this house we inherited one of those glasstop ovens.... the only thing I have to complain about is what someone mentioned earlier - the burners "cycle down" and take forever to get a pot of potatoes boiling. Grrrr.
