It's been so stinking cold here for so long, tonight we went outside and ATTEMPTED to have some fun. Guess what we did? We blew bubbles!!! Yeah!!! We had several bottles of bubbles, so there were little frozen bubbles all over the snow. It was so fun!!!!
I thought of you while we were out there.....

I'll bet the kids thaought that was really cool, Skeeter. I don't want to rub it in but..yestereday as we were driving into SF the outside temp was 77 degrees. By the time we got into SF though it was 63 degrees. I'll take it though. It sure beats the cold weather you and many parts of the country are having.

I'm glad we did it last night; tonight it would have been too warm! We're having a heat wave -- it's in the low 30's!!! LOL

If you're looking for warm weather, San Francisco isn't the place to go. It's generally cool year round, even in summer. Downright cold at night; especially near the water. It's where we go to cool off in the summer. LOL It's at least 30 degrees cooler in the summer and only two hours away!
Now, if you're looking for summer heat, just visit me. It will be the last time you come to this part of California in summer. lol

Oh wait, you said winter. Go to Southern California. They're the ones with the mild weather year round. You don't want to come to Northern California in winter.

Since I am still sitting as dunce in the corner 'cuz I would have posted this personal message on your home personal profile page, but can't seem to....Jinh, & I see you have a thread created in your honour....well I did make the crabcakes for the first time.
It was a hit. I was just missing some red onion and bell pepper but they turned out great. I added a shake of cayenne pepper to add some zing.....to make up for my missing ingredients.
I would make them again :)
They were just as good as the ones we order at our favourite restaurant.
However, MrSam was looking for the little side sauce they serve. lol
Thanks
Glad you liked them...it's my favorite crab cake recipe so far....did you make the mango/pepper salsa to go with them Sam??

Oh, that's the best part, Sam! Not pullin' yer tail - it's good stuff!
Do you get nice mangoes up there? We get pretty nice ones year-round here - usually 3 for a dollar...

Our mangoes come from Mexico or California and of course we have to pay for the voyage......they are usually .99 each.

Ours come from the South too, Sam (not like you can grow them in Montana)...I'm usually surprised at how good they are and how cheap too...(hubby makes fun of them because he lived in South Africa for five years...I guess they were HUGE there)lol

I was watching a TV show on HGTV called House Hunters & the young guy looks at three houses and at the end of the show they reveal which home he purchased.
One of the homes had a mango tree in the yard and he plucked a mango from the tree and took a bite & the Real Estage Agent told him he has to buy the house.
& btw, my cherry tree is in full white blossoms :)
The scent is dreamy !!

Oh, I can't wait 'till we get our yard finished Sam...do you know what kind of cherry tree you have? I figure if it will grow well in Canada, it should do well here...
That reminds me, I have the most wonderful Hawthorn, and I know it's from Canada, but I can't find it anymore...would love to have more...

I am really not sure what kind of cherry tree it is. When he moved into this home it was already there. But the fruit is delicious. We pick right off the tree and eat :)
However, I am looking at an ad that my local nursey has sent me and they are advertising a sale on a cherry tree by the name of :
Prunus MONTMORENCY
Pear trees grow very well here as well. & apple too ! But I find them very messy with apples always falling on the ground.
PK...

MONTMORENCY is a tart pie cherry...
Chances of getting to even pick a sweet cherry off the tree are slim to none...
As it is, the birds pick the tart cherries earlier than they should be picked for use...
Stark Bros just gave us one with our order of plums, peach and nectarine... We had one in MO, that we were able to get a harvest for a while... Then, when it got large enough to really provide some fruit, the birds found it, and that was that... But they really do make great pies!!! Or cherry preserves... Or fresh off the tree, if you like tart...
;0))

The tree is very close to our front door. As we come & go we see the cherries grow and turn from a pale yellow to a deep crimson. They are not tart but sweet to me. (ours is definitely a sweet cherry tree) Every year, the same thing happens. There is always the particular moment when we leave the house and pass the tree & stare in awe that not a cherry is left ??????
The birds seem to wait until the cherries turn a deep crimson colour. At their optimum peak.
Same for our raspberry bushes.
I grew up with white cherry trees..............how come I never hear of those?
:/

Numm...in my next life I'm going to be a bird at Sam's house : )...unless you put bird netting up...then I'm screwed...: (

A clever bird like you Jinh, shouldn't find bird netting a challenge, LOL...
We tried that one year... Spent a bundle on netting, and it was more trouble than it was worth... Trying to get it off was a real pain, and the netting ripped more cherries off the tree than the birds... <sigh> And the fact it was black made it even harder to just see....
Check out starkbros.com They are about the best provider of fruit trees... It's not too late to plant... And they have trees for every clime...
They do require a lot of maintenance... Cherries (pie cherries, anyway) not as much as the others. They don't seem to be plagued by the same things as peaches and plums... But it's constant spraying (or more time consuming organic measures) from start to finish...
;0))

I hear ya about the bird netting...we covered five 30' rows of raspberries with it - not to keep out the birds, but the grasshoppers...they were eating the berries as soon as they started to develop. Well, what a mess - the grasshoppers just climbed up underneath it, and we struggled trying to rip it off enough so that we could get under it...
I haven't decided how we're going to landscape the yard...the dogs need to be considered, which takes a lot of practical planning...right now it's just a 50'x75' fenced lawn....I've had a dream of a pond and cherry trees and oodles of perennials and bulbs...
Thing is, we had a one acre organic garden, so we never got around to doing our yard...we don't do the garden anymore, so we're focused on the yard now...we'll get er done...

I have not had to spray the cherry tree. Guess I am lucky. The apples trees are another story.......tents/webs of wormy caterpillars
