I was talking to someone today and I learned that I have been eating bug extracts. Ewww. I know. If you eat something with red coloring, it is likely that you also are eating bugs. LOL. Here in the Netherlands the ingredient is listed as E120. I don't know what it would be listed as in the US. I was looking at the ingredients for M&M's it definitely listed E120.

I thought I'd let you guys know this. But if you already know this, just ignore my post. LOL

In Canada, we still use the no. 3 red dye but I know the US banned it.

I think the crushed shells of red bugs are at least natural which I think is better than a synthetic substance.

You might give up eating a lot of packaged processed food if you really knew how many rodent hairs and particles get packaged up in the factory.

forgot to add that when Jake was little he used to have a slight reaction to the sort of orange coloring on Cheeze itz and goldfish...his upper lip would swell a bit and he would get a small rash on his legs.

Jess couldn't have red food dye, made her go off the rails, I once give her cold medicine when she was around 2, and she thought she was a dog, she was digging for bones in the carpet.

Man it made her hyper!! I couldn't keep up with her, didn't find out till later it was the red dye. I actually had to call her Dad home from work one day, cuz she was so out of control on it..

I'd rather eat bugs than the chemicals and crap they use.

As a kid, I always had terrible eczema, I later found out it was because I ate so much crappy processed foods.

It wasn't until we started eating a 90% organic diet, that I was eczema free...now that we don't grow and raise all of our own stuff, it's come back on my calf.

We buy organic as much as we can, but non-organic does creep in quite a bit...

I only use those at x-mas for a recipe I have, we are lucky Jess is a very healthy eater, doesn't bother with sweets, can't remember the last time I saw her drink pop, she loves water and orange juice.

I think it starts when you are young, we never had junk in the house, we wanted her to have a taste for healthy foods first. Her ice cream was really frozen yogurt, her cookies were plain arrowroots, she never knew the difference.

I started her on flax bread when she was a toddler, as she got older we let her have some fun stuff like fruit loops but she never really had the taste for that stuff.

She still eats hot oatmeal almost every morning.

That's interesting because Jess has had a rash on her stomach off and on for years, the Dr. has tried every kind of cream for it...I am going to ask him about food/chemical allergy

They are a true cherry. They have stems and all. They just have been injected with dye (shell of insects) and loads of sugar and then left to sit & preserve in another sugary sweet syrup.

YOU Asked and I googled..cuz I was curious also ! lol

The FDA defines a maraschino cherry as “the common or usual name of an article consisting of cherries which have been dyed red, impregnated with sugar and packed in a sugar sirup flavored with oil of bitter almonds or a similar flavor.”

Keep your kids away from red jello, red koolaids, red sodas, red pop tarts, red candy too.

Makes some of them hyperactive, aggressive, nervous, dizzy. Adults most commonly suffer from migraines.

Not to mention the sugar will do the same things...wont it Sam?

Some kids don't react to sugar in the same way but the red dye has a greater impact. Sugar doesn't often cause a skin rash but the dye will.

Like when Dani was mentioning the cold medicine. Red dye is added along with sugar and it is usually the red dye that causes more havoc.

They have done studies. They have given out red skittles & red gums and strawberry type of pop tarts and/or jello/koolaid products versus let's say : green and the reactions were worse with red dyes.

Some children are more sensitive to others.

It's amazing what the FDA and the USDA (and other countrie's regulatory commissions), get away with...

Just so long as it doesn't kill you right-out, it passes...they don't seem to care about quality of life, or long term effects...

Well, if we (the consumer) would send the message to them that we don't WANT red-colored everything, they would stop the practice...

It's up to us - money talks - and we have the power! LOL

That was Jess to a tee, you wouldn't believe what I went through after she had a few doses of the cold medicine in her..she was so hyper, she was pulling the drawers right out of the kitchen counter, running around it was crazy, it scared the crap out of me. She wanted to stop, but couldn't..I ended up calling the Dr. and and they were the one's that told me about some kids being sensitive to red food dye.

She was honestly just spazed right out from the stuff.

My nephew is sensitive to red dye, he is a different person, they make sure he has nothing that is red which includes red jello. He has become very hyper, he is already active but he just becomes extremely hyper. They have raised him on healthy food, his favorite thing to eat is shrimp and rice with peas, I hope his love for this type of food will last, he is only 4, but I think it will since his parents eat healthy.
