OK, they're doing it again...

72 degrees (F) right now, and the peepers on the pond are singing their heads off... Windows are open, but it is really breezy...

Gil is at the new place but will cut it short and come in tonight... Again, when he left Friday, the forecast was fine...

But... Now...

More sleet and freezing rain coming in tomorrow... But the good news is that it should turn over to snow - hopefully before we get another houseful of water...

It's been unusually warm for this time of year in this part of California, for about the past week. It's starting to cool down at night again though, into the 30s.

No complaints here...just typical early March weather...

Sun, wind, a few little snow squalls, more sun, a little wind, more little snow squalls...

Can't believe the blue birds will be here in a few days!

Blue Birds stay here all winter... I haven't a clue what they eat - so do the Carolina Wrens...

Along with the Peepers, singing I heard the a Phoebe earlier... I swear, they are the noisiest daytime birds there are.. So repetitive... Nightingales are their nighttime equivalent...

I wonder if the Nightingales will plague us, there???

Hah...

I knew that didn't sound right...

It's the Whippoorwills that are so noisy at night...

Of course it's a rule, that you don't discover a mistake until you hit "submit"...

I see them (and the wrens) poking around looking for bugs, and they never go for seeds...

I think they find hibernating insects, insect eggs, and grubs...and, as I said, they like berries..

It's strange...we have Robins and Townsend Solitaires stay here all winter, and they don't eat seed either...they must live on Juniper berries (cause those are the only berries up here).

Oh, speaking of Juniper berries, (and birds that like them)...the other morning I was outside and I swear there must have been a flock of no less than 300 Waxwings in the field below...they would land on a shrub, and then fly off, and when they did, it sounded like a whip cracking! Just a huge black cloud of them - the biggest I've ever seen in all the time we've lived here..

Japanese cherry trees are in full bloom. (Sakura--CHERRY BLOSSOMS) Other trees are budding; unfortunately, frosts are still killing the budding camillias, etc. Chicakdees, Goldfinches, Cardinals, Painted Finches, etd are still flocking to the bird feeder(s).
Spring is in the air! As a Zen poet noted, a butterfly has alighted on the temple bell!

As much as I HATE all this snow we got this year...which is now melting in buckets today. I really hate the idea of what the yard will look like when its all gone and all that is in the lawn are PILES of sunflower seed shells and PILES of dog poop!

We never let the dog poop in our other yard..but this year I didnt get around to training her to go in a "special spot" ...I will pay for it soon lol

I guess we will go cold again tomorrow...rain turning to snow. GEE Snow...thats a new one ! lol

I have never seen so many cardinals here in my life ! Must have close to 30 pairs and a few females with out mates. When they all land in the crabapple tree waiting to get to the feeder...it looks so pretty.

Every morning when MY friendly neighborhood hawk comes in to get breakfast...I pray he nails a pesty sparrow !

Gladly! lol

You can sign up online at www.feederwatch.org

In Canada, call Bird Studies Canada (888) 448- 2473

They send you a packet of info. (identification posters, etc.) and you enter your bird-count information on-line...you only count two days per every seven days, and you only count the birds at your feeders, waterers, or in the near proximity of your count area.

They are especially interested in House-finch eye disease, and want you to note any House Finches you see that may be affected/afflicted...

Powder's dry... We got only rain (And LOTS of it yesterday) with no problems. This is the first time the pond has been full since last spring.... There is a lot of local flooding, so it has been reported... Our road probably took a good hit, but we won't know until it thaws, LOL...

When it turned over, we got a very minimal coating of ice before it stopped. By the time the next wave arrived it was cold enough for snow, so all is fine. It's up to 40 degrees, and we are melting, but we (translates Gil) are not expecting a problem...

Jinh ~ They are already one over, and we don't have a week-long spring break, so they are making the first one up on Holy Thursday (Thursday before EAster) and I believe if they have another one they will make that one up on Easter Monday -- they've started building these days in throughout the year to make "making up" a little easier.....but we haven't had to do this in a couple of years......

It was mild here for a couple of days, then turned very cold and some snow. We didn't get the ice that they got up towards North Ohio.

The wind was pretty bad too.

Today, around 33 and a little bit of sun shining.

I seen a robin a couple of mornings ago, and I felt like a million dollars when I see it. Maybe spring won't be too much longer.

I'm moving "down south" with you, Cindy!!!!! It was horrible here last night -- tree limbs all over the place from the weight of the ice. Many local places lost power due to the weight of the ice.....

Just as expected, no school today.....and the kids were bummed!! They don't want make-up days.....the fun is over for them.

Sun is out now, just need to get the temps above freezing to melt some ice. I'm afraid to watch the forecast!!!!

South Florida is great except for the elderly drivers and the hurricanes. Well Hurricanes has affected most if not all of Fl, but S. Florida does seem to get it the most. North Fl is nice in the sense that I do get cooler weather in the winter months, have had frost on my car window but it will be nice when I move a little farther south, closer to family and the beach, warmer weather...

A friend of mine lives in Phoenix and he's only had one or two warm days thus far. He's okay with it though -- he used to live in Jackson Hole, WY where he nearly froze to death 10 months out of the year.

Well, that's one thing I've never experienced is hurricanes; they're unheard of out here in the west. However, we do get tornados for about the past ten years! Weird, huh? They were unheard of here until then.

It sounds like CA and FL are similar with the weather, there are some people that assume that FL is very hot year round but it can get very cold in northern FL, we have gotten down into the 20's here, we are supposed to be in the mid 70's today but it does not feel that warm to me.

We were in FL last week, and for 2 days it was in the 50s. Hubby was complaining bitterly, lol. He expected it to be picture perfect every day we were down there. I was fine with a couple of cool days.

You Floridians sure are wusses though. Saw one elderly lady with a mink coat at Animal Kingdom in line for that Safari ride! Also saw people in parkas those two days. I didn't know you could even buy a parka in FL. Then again, we saw some guy in the swimming pool with his baby one of those nights it got down in the 30s after 10pm! Sure they keep the swimming pools at 80º, but what about when you have to get out and go back to your hotel room?

After calling you wusses, I have to say I'm more than just a bit jealous of you too. It's easy to forget that it's not spring back home in early March. Our last day in Orlando was heaven at its best! Low 80s and a nice breeze! OMG! When we got back to Minneapolis, reality hit and hit hard! Down in the single digits. Dang it all anyway!

After our third time there, I now know the perfect time to be in FL. Jan and Feb! Disney World seemed to be busier than I thought it would be, but not crowded.

There were lots of people there with their kids from Michigan, Canada, MT, ND and other extreme north locations. One guy we talked to, said he was from around Ottawa. Said he took his kids out of school, got the curriculum and were going to stay down there for a month. I guess it took 24 hrs to drive down there. I think he said they had a motor home they were traveling in.

Glad you had a great time down here! I freely admit to being a wuss, my blood is much thinner now than it used to be, you can tell who the Floridians are and who the tourists are- tourists will walk around in shorts and t-shirts and swim in the ocean in 50 degree weather LOL Yes, they sell winter clothes down here, we do get cooler temperatures- this past December there was quite a few mornings were we had temps in the 20s

I would even add March to your list of when to come down, as long as it is before June which is the start of Hurricane season and don't come during spring break.

I've heard that about Florida, Mon.

Our tornados aren't nearly the magnitude that the rest of the country gets, but we have them strong enough to take the roof off of a house, a barn, and one wiped out a whole block in a neighboring town a few years ago. Don't know why we get them now; the weather is very strange!

This is cummulative. The current snowfall on record is 383 cm / 12.5 feet during a winter season. The year 1971 holds this record.

If we get your blizzard, and possibly get 30cm+, I think for this winter 2007/8
we might just surpass and break this record.

At this point, we might as well & try to break the record for the agonizing season we have had.

People are stealing snow blowers it is that bad !!!

Yesterday, I was in Canadian Tire hardware store and people are asking for snow shovels (not one can be found - sold out) & the aisles are now filled with patio furniture and garden supplies.

lol

I already broke a shovel (my ergonomic one !!!!) but have others, thankfully.

The snow banks are so high that people are having accidents because when you back out of the driveways - you cannot see the road.

That's one bad thing about going to a warm place in winter, you come back to what seems even worse that it would've been if you'd just stayed home and duked it out, lol.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you both that there'll be a warming trend and it'll all melt by April. But I suppose that will bring floods, so I don't know what to wish you---just the best I guess. Keep a stiff upper lip?

The pretty kind of snow. That postcard snow that blankets the roofs and trees.

Keep it coming......

We got around another 30+cm (1 foot) of snow this weekend :)

so far we have reached 347cm.

We will need another 37cm (1ft and some) to break the 1971 record of 383cm.

I am optimistic that we will break the snowfall record this year !

Boy am I ever glad I don't live in Ohio any longer. Columbus, etc. took a big hit and now they could have flooding when this melts.

Geesh.

Just returned from another outing; spotted another one @ 3:54 as per the car clock. All three were on the muddy grass by the edge of some melted snow. The poor things...

The cartoon in my local paper has two polar bears sitting on mounds of snow.

One says to the other:

Looks like the sun is coming out again & I think it is time to head way up North.

The other polar bear:

CHILAX !

With all the snow they have got around here ......we will be able to stay until June.......
