Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, a Republican, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president on Friday, citing the senator's steady leadership, good judgment and ability to unify Democrats, Republicans and independents.

"Sen. Obama is a once-in-a-lifetime candidate who will transform our politics and restore America's standing in the world," Weld said in a statement.

"We need a president who will lead based on our common values and Sen. Obama demonstrates an ability to unite and inspire. Throughout this campaign I've watched his steady leadership through trying times and I'm confident he is the best candidate to move our country forward," he said.

Weld joined other prominent Republicans endorsing Obama over GOP nominee John McCain in the campaign's final weeks, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson and Scott McClellan, former press secretary to President Bush.

Last year, Weld came to New Hampshire to campaign for another former Massachusetts governor, Republican Mitt Romney, who ended his bid for the presidential nomination in February.

Weld was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Before that, he was U.S. attorney for Massachusetts under President Reagan and was later led the criminal division of the Justice Department.

There must be some serious divisions in the Republican Party for this kind of mass exodus so close to election day.

It is looking more and more apparent every day that Obama will be our next President.

Former MA gov William Weld was interested in running for gov in NY last year, I believe he grew up in NY.

There was lots of opposition to his candidacy so it didn't get very far.
He is a moderate.

He may be interested in trying for NY gov again, by endorsing Obama he may
be looked at more favorably by some. Rudy may want to run as gov so his chances aren't good.

I am a little perplexed by the endorsement ...considering Weld was so behind Romney and Romney is working so hard for McCain.

I'm wondering if an Ambassadorship was offered...cause frankly, I don't get the significance of a Weld endorsement at this stage of the game. It's not like he is a prominent national figure like Powell....and locally it's so late to have it influence anyone around here. It seems more self benefiting than having anything to do with helping Obama.

I do recall him being pretty ticked at McCain during the primaries....he didn't like the way McCain was treating Romney. Wonder if that carried over?

Kinda hard to remove personal feelings altogether...

Since it's looking more and more like Obama's going to pull it off, I wondered if he might not be doing it for the sake of political posturing...

I don't see how anyone who truly believes in the Republican philosophy, can simply jump so far in the other direction - for any reason... It's not like O is even a "moderate" liberal... (oxymoron, LOL...)

Deserting the sinking ship comes to mind, with so many waiting until they are sure the wind has shifted before jumping off...

;0))

The same thing happened to Hillary...it was astonishing how quickly her old friends and allies bailed on her....and she was more than competitive with Obama...she even had more of the popular vote! I felt badly for her...still do.

Scoops, Bill Weld, was on Morning Joe, this am,and explained in detail why he was for Obama...he was eloquent and convincing....he, like most Obama supporters has watched and listened to him carefully, and concluded he is the man for this century. I am always proud of people who put partisan politics aside and country first. And , he was asked about being in an Obama asministration, answered NO emphatically....he just believes with all his heart, that Obama has the brilliance, steadiness, and grasp of problems, that will make a good President. I always liked Wells..he has always been his own man.

I watched that, too Mackey.

I thought that he was very sincere and explained thoroughly how he came to his decision.

As I've said 10,000 times now, it was Hillary's to lose. She didn't run a good enough campaign. I know you try to jab at Barack and somehow make him a bad guy because Hillary lost - but it was hers to lose. Her fund raising was terrible. I even wrote letters to her campaign saying "why aren't you asking me for money?" = they never replied. Obama's campaign was perfect. Hillary lost it fair and square.

P.S. I voted for her - just because I couldn't bring myself not to...
