View Full Version : Eyebrow waxing

I'm not sure if we've discussed this before.
Does anyone here wax their own eyebrows? Is it hard to do? What type of wax do you use/where do you get it?
I've had it done in a salon and I really liked how it turned out but I want to save money and time and do it myself.
Let me know if you have experience with this. TIA!

I have done my own but I prefer to get it done at a spa or salon..or I just get them waxed to shape them and then keep up with tweezing
you can buy kits now that come with little cut outs to shape while you wax, like a templette.

I would leave this to the experts.
One of the biggest beauty blunders I see our over tweezed brows. Really can age and as one gets older the brow naturally becomes sparse - hairs do not grow back and who wants to have to fuss with creating brows ?
I think if one gets them professionally done and you are happy with the shape/outcome then just tweeze regulary within the shape.

I get mine done at the salon; I'm afraid of messing up.
I HAVE highlighted my own hair though before, to save money.

thats what I pretty much do Sam..and like you said my brows are so sparse now I only have to reshape them with tweezers once a month or so

Now just don't get me started on chin hairs
O.O
I have gotten mine both waxed and threaded. I really liked the threading, but the girl I was going to disappeared.
I tried doing it myself and bought one of those peel-off waxes. I only did that once and went back to the salon.
As we get older, I think, that pulling and tugging with the wax stretches the skin.
A couple of months ago I had them done at the Anastasia* booth at Sephora. A bit costly, but worth it. The young lady told me to get a good pair of tweezers, a good mirror and to tweeze as the hairs started to grow out.
*Anastasia Soare of Anastasia Beverly Hills is the eyebrow guru. "My goal is to make the eyebrows beautifully symmetrical," she says, "because even when features are asymmetrical—as they most often are—well-shaped brows will bring a kind of harmony to the face." Eyebrows that are too thick, too thin, not long enough or unruly can call so much attention to themselves that other, prettier features go unnoticed.

Oh Gosh, love this topic
I need help. This past few years my eyebrows look like Tip O'Neil's eyebrows. Remember him? Our speaker of the house during the 70's?
I got one of those kits that have the shapers and the peel-off wax thingy, and I DID see a difference, but have those little stray hairs that stick out...lol..my brows DO look better than they did, but want them to even look better.
What is a threader?
Cindy, this explains threading:
Eyebrow threading is a practice that has been around for centuries. This procedure is used for eyebrow shaping as well as removing hair from the cheeks, upper lip, and chin. Some men use this procedure to remove the hair from between their eyebrows or to remove facial hair in the beard and mustache area. Eyebrow threading is popular in the Middle East, India, and some Asian countries. It is slowly becoming fashionable in the United States as an alternative to waxing and plucking.
Threading is done in salons with one simple tool. This tool is a piece of one hundred percent cotton thread. One end of the thread is held between the teeth or is anchored around the neck of the beautician and the other end is held firmly with the left hand. The index and middle fingers of the right hand then form a loop in the center of the string. Some beauticians will apply baby powder to the eyebrows before they begin. The baby powder will absorb any oils around the hair follicles that may cause the hairs to slip from the thread as it is pulled.
The thread is then rolled over the surface of the skin collecting the hairs as it moves. The thread is then used to lift the hairs out by the root. This procedure does involve a small amount of pain. The amount of pain will vary from person to person. Many people find that this is the best way to get a great arch to their eyebrow. Because threading is so effective in removing even baby find hairs, make up goes on much smoother.
This procedure is more efficient than tweezers because it pulls out a row of hairs out at a time instead of plucking them one by one. Tweezers can often nip the skin causing small marks. Threading eliminates this entirely.

Then...wouldn't ya look like Groucho Marx?..lol...yeah, I still have eyebrows. I always DID have kind of thick eyebrows. They're a pain in the butt, if ya ask me. I'd rather not have any at all..lol
Thank you Mia for the info about threading. It sounds rather painful to me, but I just might find a salon who will do such a thing.
I have a friend who is a hairdresser. I will ask her, if she may do it, unless she hasn't been trained for it. She just has a mickey mouse salon..lol..Don't tell her I said that...(:
Cindy, you have to be trained to thread. It's no more painful then tweezing and it's a lot faster.

I pluck mine....the majority of my eyebrow hairs are really light blonde.....but there are a few brown ones in there....it's just easier (and cheaper) for me to do my own.
Be careful with brows! When you get older, you'll wish you had left them alone.

You may be right DK. Of course, I'm already older, so it may not harm me...Ha!

So....I'll just pluck and be happy about it...(:

Thankfully I have never had to worry about my eyebrows, if anything I have to add some color to them to make them stand out- the only problem I have is that as I have gotten older I seem to have a stray hair that pops out where it is not welcomed, but this has nothing to do with eyebrows lol
I keep waking up with my right eyebrow all messed up...all the hairs are sticking straight out, and I have to put stuff on them to make them stay down...this just started a few months ago...it's bugging me a lot!lol
Cindyloo
11-07-2008, 09:29 AM
That happens to me too. It's usually my left eyebrow. I must sleep on my left side most of the time.
Well, what a plucking day I had today...lol
I plucked and tweezed and plucked some more, so other then both eyes swollen up, I look a tad better...(:/
Whew...glad THAT'S overwith.

What?!?
Susan, how bad can they be? Unless you're related to the Marx Brothers, I really think you're ok, lol.
I spend the money and get mine waxed but it's not really often. Maybe once every 2 months? I tweeze in between times.
I do have a waxing kit, can't remember the name of it, it's the 'sugar' kind, the company was the mom that had the two really dark haired girls and she created it for them? That's what the commercials and infomercials were. I rarely used it, it's probably still sitting around somewhere.
Anybody remember the name of that wax kit?

My eyebrows stick up like Mr Spocks (my dad's did too) so I usually just take a comb and scissors and cut the top off. Works for me. Thankfully I'm fair skinned and fair hair so it's not really that noticable.
There is a place in our mall (one of those little booths down the middle of an isle) that has a lady that does threading. She always seems to be busy.

Wonder how much they charge for threading ?
By the area or time ?
Threading is a much gentler (is that a word) ?
than tweezing.
I think I kept a flyer that came around in the mail about threading - I should take a lO.Ok... okay oops No threading but Lyudmila will shape eyebrows for $5.00
&
Wax your chin hairs for $8.00
&
If you have a hairy face, it will cost you $15.00 of wax

Raney I also use the comb and scissors and cut off at the top. It works very well, Cindy it may work for you too.
I avoid plucking altogether this way.
I've been 'training' mine...I pluck the most obstreperous ones and smooth down the rest...they (brows) used to be so good...don't know what's going on...but they're kind of pissing me off...it's like a mini war...

I wax and pluck mine but also use clear mascara (on my brows) as the last step in my make up routine everyday to keep them neat, in place and shaped exactly the way that I want them.
Yesterday I had my eyebrows waxed. The first drop of wax on my right lid was HOT! I get home and, as always, put some cortisone on the waxed area. Last night it starts to swell on the site of the initial drop. Later, I have something that looks like a blister so I pat on some antibiotic.
This morning my whole top lid is swollen. I've experienced a little redness from too hot wax, but never like this.
CVS and/or Manhattan Eye & Ear will be getting a visit from me today.
I see a good tweezer and magnifying mirror in my future!

I was reading on one site that to treat a burn on an eyelid they use optholamic bacitracin.
It said you can use a mild topical antibiotic if you can't get some of that.
watch out if it gets tight or if your eyelid is open when you are sleeping.

Mia- this sounds horrible, I hope you feel better soon!! I have never needed to get my eyebrows waxed, but I have thought of getting my chin waxed- as I have gotten older I tend to get just one hair on my chin, I have been just using a tweezer- I mean it is only one, and it is blonde, but I thought wax would make that hair not come back for a long time, but I am thinking of just staying with the tweezer..

When I was in my 20's I singed (is that how you spell it?) off half off my left eyebrow.
I was renting a cottage on the Vineyard with 3 other girls...they were trying to light the grill.
I came out from the shower in my robe with wet hair and said "step aside"cranked up the propane and snapped the switch! LOL well flames shot out, everyone screamed and the eyebrow was no more. Lost a few head hairs too...thank God it was wet!
Took years to grow back...and I had to always travel with an eyebrow pencil just in case it rubbed off for any reasonbecause that was freakish looking.
I remember one morning when my niece was little and crawled into bed with us and I hadn't put the other half of the eyebrow "on" yet...her eyes got so big. LOL

So Mia, how did things turn out ?
Your eye ?
Did you back to the salon ?
Oh, I was getting to that. What a piece of "poop" afternoon was. Unrelated to the eye incident.
So at 10:30 I took a walk to Manhattan Eye & Ear. MISTAKE since the problem was on the lid and not IN the eye. I went because the eye felt dry and the lid by the lashes was red & swollen (actually, the entire top lid was swollen with "bumps" similar to blisters on them).
They don't have an ER, but a clinic. After filling out all the forms, they take me in a waiting room. (At least I got to see part of Rachel Ray and 35 minutes of The View. :))
They take my blood pressure (heck, I have a swollen eyelid) and my eye pressure. Sit and wait. The Dr. calls me, asks what the problem is and tells me he's giving me an eye exam.
Eye exam??????? I tell him that 4 months ago I went to the opthamologist, but he tells me that that's what they do there and he proceeds with the damn eye chart. Clear drops, some yellow goop, a white light, a blue light, no dilating I say, he walks out of the room comes back and says my eyes are healthy. I am pissed!
What about my lids, I ask? Oh that, put a cold compress on it. He sends me packing.....
At the end of the day I go buy a Mega lotto ticket ($60+ mil) and who do I see on the street...the owner of the salon. We say "hi" and walk by each other. All of a sudden I remember my eye. Hey, come back here. I tell him about the hot wax, my eye and my visit to the hospital. He doesn't understand most of what I am saying. He's Korean.
I remember that I am a minority, speak slowly to him and motion to my eye. He tells me to stop by tomorrow and give him the bill for my expenses. He adds that I spend a lot of money at his salon (I imagine that's why he feels he needs to reimburse me). So, tomorrow when I go for my pedicure, I'll give him the receipt for my $20 co-pay. If the SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM declines any portion of the hospital bill because I had been tested 4 months ago.....he'll get that too.
Swelling is gone, area is still tender and my eye still feels dry.

You got to watch some TV

Also this:
Waxing can be painful, particularly in sensitive areas. Pain experienced, however, depends on the pain threshold of each individual. Waxing can cause redness and increase skin sensitivity for a few hours. If you're using oral retinoids (isotretinoin and acitretin), waxing should not be performed until these medications are stopped for at least 6 months to 1 year. Taking these medications and waxing may cause tearing of the skin and possible scarring. Individuals using topical retinoids (e.g. Retin A®) should stop the medication 3-4 weeks prior to.

Now my eyebrows do not have any gray and are very light, they have gotten a little darker as I have gotten older so my hairdresser touches up my brows. If you decide to get your hair colored ask him/her to do your brows too, and you're welcome

Scoops -- I did something similar once a few years ago -- I lit the bbq (of course I had the gas on high :) -- only instead of my eye brow, I burnt off my eye lashes on one eye!!! Aye yi yi.....I've had a hard time living that one down!

oh, and I hate when you go to a clinic for something specific but they just go about their usual routine exam....like robots. then your purpose for being there is an afterthought...just so long as they get that exam fee in,

I wonder if the SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM will pay the hospital. I had a full blown exam about 4 months ago which they paid the opthamologist for.
This is an example of how the system is abused. I told the doctor I had a full exam, new glasses and that I didn't need an eye test. He ignored me.
He should've asked if I had trouble seeing and only looked in my eyes to see if there was any damage to the eye as a result of the burn on the lid.

It took about 6-9 months, but there is no way (unless you do fake -- and I would look ridiculous with fake eyelashes -- I would be the one with one hanging into my eye :) to cover up the lack of eyelashes.....I used little to no mascara during that time, hoping that then it wouldn't be noticeable. If it was, no one really mentioned it. But I knew it! LOL

I messed up my eye brows won't say how because I am too embarrassed LOL I thought I could get away with hiding them behind my hair, I almost did too until I pushed back my hair and my sister's saw the and we're holy cow what happened to your eye brows so I made up this ridiculous story don't remeber what I said.
So now they're kind messed up, they're fine my pic but I have to put stuff on them too but I usually keep them hidden behind my hair because it's so long I can get away with it I don't have move my hair.
That should crack everyone up. Anyway when I was in eight grade I had this nurse who had no eye brows and would draw them on.
Wow I can't beleive I just admitted that, didn't think I ever would. OH god I am gonna lot of teasing for that now LOL

I know some may think I'm crazy (my husband did) but about two years ago, I had permanent makeup done. Eyeliner, eyebrows and lips. It's the best thing I ever did -- I absolutely love it. My eyebrows were always okay -- I would just use taupe powder to make them a little longer; but, now, they are really nicely shaped. Same with my lips -- I have a perfect lip line now and I never have to apply lipstick. I use lip gloss only. It takes me about five minutes to do my makeup and I wake up looking like a soap star (well, not really but I wish). Sunscreen/moisturizer, a little mineral powder, mascara and gloss and I'm done in the morning.

I always thought that I would like to get my eye lashes dyed. They are fair and need mascara. I don't always apply everyday and it is quite noticeable.
There are very few people I have met who I can honestly say who do not need any enhancement.
I guess we accept & work with what we have.
You got me curious, Irishrose - how you screwed up your brows ? Did you over pluck ?
You have told us this much already - surely you can complete the story....lol
Curious minds do need to know.

I know it can get very easy to get carried away and before you know it or realize you have plucked way too much.
The hairs will grow back in. You are still young and have time. As you get older, you lose hairs and the growth process slows down.
I don't think it is noticeable in the pic/s that you have posted. You are probably more self conscious than you actually need to be.

Not really; but I think if you would remember the story that you made up in telling/explaining to your sister about your new or lack of eyebrows would probably crack me up more.
Like if you said you were taking a short nap on the sofa and your pet ended up licking them off your face while you were in a deep sleep or something like that...

I didn't win the Mega on Friday nor the Lotto yesterday.
I did go for my pedicure today. I took the receipt from the hospital. It was only for my copay, but what the heck. They gave me back my $20.00 and added 200 points to my membership card. (They give you a point for every dollar you spend. You can get free treatments for "x" amount of points.)

I know my Ex MiL does that....LOOKS dumb as hell to !
I dont think after all those years of shaving her real ones will even grow back anymore.

Saw a new beauty product today by Tweezerman
BROW MOUSSE
Looks like a tube of mascara with a wand but it is a clear gel that you apply with the brush to keep your brows in place.
I think a dab of clear gloss would do the same trick.
I bought the Anastasia eyebrow kit and there is a wax cream that comes with it. It's supposed to keep the brows in place. You have to put it on with your fingers. I don't like it. I would prefer something in a wand to apply. I used to spray hair spray on my brow brush and brush the brows.

You can also use an old mascara brush (wash it in soapy water) and use a little hair gel and/or other types: lipgloss, vaseline, or hair wax/pommade.
The brush will groom them/shape them into the desired form.
