Obama victory opens door to new black identity

By JESSE WASHINGTON, AP

WASHINGTON – Shortly after leaving the voting booth, 70-year-old community activist Donald E. Robinson had a thought: "Why do I have to be listed as African-American? Why can't I just be American?"

The answer used to be simple: because a race-obsessed society made the decision for him. But after Barack Obama's mind-bending presidential victory, there are rumblings of change in the nature of black identity and the path to economic equality for black Americans.

Before Tuesday, black identity and community were largely rooted in the shared experience of the struggle — real or perceived — against a hostile white majority. Even as late as Election Day, many blacks still harbored deep doubts about whether whites would vote for Obama.

Obama's overwhelming triumph cast America in a different light. There was no sign of the "Bradley Effect," when whites mislead pollsters about their intent to vote for black candidates. Nationwide, Obama collected 44 percent of the white vote, more than John Kerry, Al Gore or even Bill Clinton, exit polls show.

In Ohio, domain of the fabled working-class white swing voter, where journalists unearthed multitudes of racist quotes during the campaign, 46 percent of white voters backed Obama's bid to become the first black president, more than the three previous Democratic candidates.

Obama did not define himself as a black candidate. So Robinson now feels free to define himself as something more than a black community activist.

"We've taken that next step. It's moving toward what we call universal brotherhood and sisterhood," Robinson said after voting for Obama in his northwest Washington, D.C., neighborhood. "We shouldn't be split and have all these divisions. That's why I say it's a bright day.

That's for sure.

I happened to see one of the Obamas law professors on Fox this morning and I got a different view just listening to him. Think his name was Ogeltree, Ogelthorphe, something like that and his comments about them were something I could wrap my mind around.

That was a good thing :)

I absolutely agree, and I'd like to know the exact same thing. What possible difference, aside from possible inherited medical conditions inherent in certain races or nationalities, does color make? Can we finally get rid of the color distinction once and for all and just be Americans?

I was watching some programs on the KKK on the History Channel this morning, and I found myself either shaking my head or crying at the horrific words and images I was hearing and seeing. I would love to see that ugly stain on our history put to rest once and for all.

Hopefully, now that the partisan election hype and hoopla is over we can finally find out what this guy is really about.... It sounds like a good start...

You mean Charles Ogletree? He's from my town; was a few years ahead of me in school, but his brother is my age and I knew him well. Very brilliant family, all of them.

For that matter, his aunt used to be my supervisor in another job a few years back.

Hi Kali, that sounds like him--if he's the law professor, than that's the one.
He seemed like a nice guy.

It's funny because he said he always felt it would be Michelle that would pursue the political spotlight, not Barack.

That's interesting, what he said about Michelle..... It looks as if they are the Clinton's all over again, LOL...

Now if "they'll" only govern from the same place on the political spectrum, I will be most relieved...

I'm finding it nice to begin to read the news and not keep seeing nasty stuff about Palin.

I feel better that she told em all off, LOL...

I guess Greta got the first interview... She's flying to Alaska... I've already forgotten when it said the interview will be... I guess Sarah was pleased with her previous interview on Halloween... Looks like they "bonded"...

LOL, the rest of Fox was grumping because she canceled an interview just before the election...

You know before the election, I was praying that whoever won, it would turn out to be the best for the country in the long run, and that (when Obama won), whatever fears I had about him would prove to be wrong. I prayed that all those stories about his having close relationships with people like Ayers and Rezko would prove to be nothing and that Obama will really put his heart and soul into making this country a better place and not be swayed by those horrible people.

The majority chose him, and as "g" said, I doubt he'll want to let his people down now that he's been given a chance. It looks like he might turn out to be just what this country needed at this time.

So far, God has always seemed to be on our country's side, or we would not be the envy of the world. I know there are some who think we've gone to hell in a hand-basket, but if they really believe we've gone down the tubes, then maybe they should just defect to one of those countries they think are so much better than ours. I heard or read a saying 'that the way to measure a country's success, is to notice how many people are trying to get in compared to the number of those trying to get out'.

Watching how moved and full of hope the black people have been since their man was chosen, has to be a good sign that we're all Americans who are proud of our country, and now maybe we can come together as one people, not blacks, Hispanics, Asians, whites, etc.

Anyway, this is what I want to believe will happen.

Yeah, it's him; he's a Harvard Law Professor. He comes home every now and then and gives talks here. I remember he was also Anita Hill's attorney in the Clarence Thomas case.

His brother, the one I knew in school, is a linguist for (hope I get the department right, lol) the Secret Service? Something like that anyway. He's fluent in Russian, German, etc. and I think he's still living in Russia right now.

I snipped the first paragraph on him from Wikipedia. I had no idea he had taught the Obamas though; very cool!

During the interview with Prof. Ogletree, it was asked if rumors were true that he was on tap for Attorney General.

I was only half listening at that point, lol, so I don't know if that was just the reporter wanting to be timely or if there was some serious talk about that. For the life of me, I can't remember what his answer was, lol. I think it was that he loves what he does presently and that Obama will surround himself with talented people and whoever gets the job, it'll be all good.

I kind of liked this guy and with Kali vouching for his family, that makes it all the better.

Good post and I have to agree with you. Even I an Obama supporter has questioned whether or not Obama will do the right things for our country. But I don't think I have seen a president elect so eager to get to work.

I'm feeling very positive about this.

Okay, while we're all starting to feel a little bit better and at least HOPE for the best, my sister isn't letting it go. lol I'm getting e-mails from her; maybe she's right, maybe not, but I'm going to post these and I'd like your thoughts:

First e-mail:

Obama plans to immediately implement his huge soSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMt spending plans in spite of the fact we're broke. This will tank what's left of the economy/ dollar/ markets/ jobs. Obama is at least as bad as I feared. (Is that possible?!) Please contact your congressional reps. It's the only way we can stop this. I guess protest letters will be a regular part of our daily lives over the next four years.

And about Emmanuel:

Obama's first pick is Emmanuel, one of the most divisive partisan people in DC, as his Chief of Staff. Hope and change you can believe in . . . from the London Times: SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMwww.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article5106463.ece

"At a dinner to celebrate Bill Clinton’s first presidential victory – Mr Emanuel was his chief fundraiser – he began to reel off the names of those who had 'crossed' him. He grabbed a steak knife and began plunging it into the table shouting “Dead! Dead! Dead!” after each name.

“When he was done the table looked like a lunar landscape,” a witness relates. “It was like something out of The Godfather. But that’s Rahm for you.”

Mr Emmanuel became infamous for his cutting manner during the Clinton years, even towards the world’s most powerful leaders."

I think she is, I mean the guy is surrounding himself with the most brilliant, tried-and-true economic advisers there are. Is Volker a soSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMt? Of course not. Warren Buffet? Don't be silly...etc., etc., etc...
