Bob just came on a pretaped video (because he was attending his daughter's game nd couldn't attend in person) and said he was leaving OVC. I thought he looked sad and seemed unsure of his future plans.
There were no watches, flowers, or a cake, only a taped goodbye message. Only mentions of Bob's love of chocolate by David during the show. I believe he was given a pink slip; his appearance did not look like his departure was voluntary.
How awful to be fired 5 days before Christmas!

He was not a very entertaining host but he deserved a better send-off than that after all the years he's been on QVC. Perhaps he wanted to keep it low key. I hope he can fall back on his skills as a chef or has some leads to find a new position. It's pretty cold to fire someone at this time of year.

Most employers only think of the almighty dollar, and when you're of no use to them anymore, they don't bat an eye giving you your walking papers. I know it's happening a lot nowadays, even at QVC, but it's still surprising when it actually happens. I liked Bob and wish him well.

Here is the article if you couldn't use the link:
Bob Bowersox, QVC Host, Abruptly Departs amid Web Frenzy
The Internet is buzzing about Sunday's abrupt departure of longtime QVC host Bob Bowersox.
The online frenzy began after Bowersox, a 22-year QVC veteran, announced his departure in a pre-taped message. He did not provide details other than to say he would be pursuing other interests.
The announcement immediately dominated Web searches from viewers seeking more information and fueled speculation that he was fired. In fact, by early afternoon, google.com listed the former host's name as the most-searched item of the day.
Message boards on the shopping network's Web site were flooded with posts about Bowersox.
"What the heck is going on?? I googled BB and QVC and kept getting the hits that he was fired??? All I saw of his message was that he wants to spend more time with his daughter and " it was with a heavy heart," poster Auntie Em wrote.
G in MT wrote, "I could tell that he was leaving just by the little he said. I wonder why? Just before Christmas? That's not nice."
Others were more critical of the home shopping staple.
"I came to the forum earlier today because I saw David on at noon and he was "wishing Bob well" and I wondered, what's up with that? and found here at least three separate threads with speculation about him being let go, laid off, etc. Threads which are now, apparently, history. Well, Big QVC Brother, whoever you are, you can remove these all you like, people will still speculate - removing them does not make it go away," Ciocia Paula wrote.
"I sincerely hope it was his decision and that the Q did not force him out. This is so typical of big management who has no clue as to what the public wants," wrote ccofoc.
According to QVC.com, Bowersox joined the network in November 1986 and appeared on its first broadcast. Aside from other hosting duties, Bowersox hosted a popular cooking-themed show on Sunday mornings titled "In The Kitchen With Bob."
QVC's media relations department was unavailable for comment.

Lisa R. is their bread and butter. I'm sure she won't be going anywhere. I never watched any of Bob's shows, so never was sure of his irritation level with viewers. But he was an old timer with the channel. I'm sure he had a lot of fans over the years.
Some of the newbies they've hired lately leave a lot to be desired. What happened to Sandra Bennett? She seemed to be a newbie who knew what she was doing.

Over the years---probably 20 or so---I learned a lot from Bob about cooking especially. It seems QVC management has lost sight of the fact that he & others in that position have formed an actual relationship of trust with viewers. People were confident in Bob & a few others so they would buy things based in part on their recommendation.

That is simple ridiculous! BB doing a taped goodbye? That is so f---ed up. All of his live cooking show where sell outs. I truly enjoyed them. If they put douche bag Dave or rughead Rick as his replacement that will totally suck. QVC is so f--ed up. Goodby QVC I will no longer watch , that is cruel and heartless. They allow asses like Rick and Jane to continue on , even hiring the little ass back. She makes me sick , with "my daughter all loved your purse Bruce , and they want one" But then she would not admit on air after geting grief over the D&B purses. As boring as he sometimes was I believe he was suffering from depression. Those poor soles get put on medication as have no affect. There personality is numb. What a shame.
At least I can make my new years resolution to not watch QVC. I removed the channel from my remotes so I don't even tune in for entertainment. I have saved a fortune this past year as I don't order like I used to. I will just make sure I never order again. Now days you can get better deals elsewhere. S&H charges are ridiculous. Fire the 2 Janes, Rick , Gabrielle, Dan & Pat. They all suck as well. when the hell is Patti going?
Bob I wish you well
There is a website for a BobBowersox.com. I'd never seen it before today, but is for a guy who seriously resembles QVC's Bob Bowersox and is an actor on film and stage. The actor lives in Philadelphia, which would fit. It doesn't mention his QVC career on the website, but there certainly is a strong resemblance. If that is the case, perhaps he wanted to pursue his acting career?
Carlinka
12-21-2008, 08:45 PM
www.bobbowersox.com is his web site devoted more to his acting but if you browse the site, it definitely covers his QVC experience.
LOL. I didn't realize his acting and website were old news. I'm a little slow on the uptake.
I still hope that's why he's leaving and not because he was fired from the Q.

OK...I'm going to stand by my guns...I have never, ever liked Bob Bower-sucks, and I tried to avoid his presentations whenever possible. I found him to be annoying, self-centered ("MY restaurant...MY kitchen...in MY professional experience") irritating, a know-it-all with absolutely no personality. I trashed him, as I do Jane Rudolph Screechy (Oops! Treacy) whenever I could.
All that being said, it is simply not the right thing to do to fire a man with 20-some-odd years' of service right before the holidays. I may not like Bob, but that doesn't mean I want to see him treated badly. So, good luck and best wishes, Bob--I may not have enjoyed you as a TV "personality" (and I use the term lightly), but I still want to see you treated fairly and with respect by your employers.

Both my mother and I suspect that Rick D. or David V. will get promoted to the spot Bob Boobersox held. Personally, I'd rather see David V. get it since he's not as abrasive and hyperactive like Rick D., but I don't know if I could stand two hours of him making the ridiculous yum-yum googly eyes!

Deplorable what management did to Bob B. I am apalled. No one deserves such shoddy treatment after 22yrs. How cruel. Even if you didn't care for him ,you must agree he deserved better. Others had cake and a final goodbye to their on- air friends. Shame on you QVC. I have been a custoner since CVN and I am truly disgusted. He was always a gentle man and very polite to all the vendors and live audiences. SHAME ON YOU QVC!!!! SHAME-SMAME
Good luck,Bob B whatever you decide to do. God bless

I was really shocked to see the videotape good bye from Bob. In recent years he started to annoy me with "His restaurant" this or that. But I did like to see things offered in the cooking shows. If they did fire him, then they should have treated him better.
It did not seem like he would abruptly quit because of his ego. To me if he was going to quit (and he could not make yesterday's show), why not said his goodbyes last week?
To me he whole acting thing seemed like a side gig. Since he was so much older than most of the other hosts, it would seem that it would be difficult to start another career.
I wish him luck, even though he was annoying.

I think a contract dispute probably ended Bobs career. He has been around a long time and maybe some of the newer hosts are making the same or close to what he is making. And age is a factor in this society, we are youth orinented and that is just a fact. It won't hurt QVC a bit to let him go rather than pay him. And in an earlier post someone said they would never let Lisa R. go she is their bread and butter, even Lisa is aging, although attractive she against a much younger woman host would show her age too! And she better be careful what she demands in salary. After all there is always a younger Lisa waiting in the wings!!!

This fixation on youth annoys the hell out of me. I want to get information from someone who has been around the block a few times, not some young kid. Kathy Levine was older and her opinions sold plenty of merchandise. It wouldn't hurt to have someone with grey hair on QVC. After all, most of their viewers are not in the 18 to 25 age group. I'll bet their audience is in a much older demographic. Antonella and Mary Beth Roe have their fans because we can relate to them. I panned Bowesocks because he was boring, not because he was older.

Great points Pebbles. No, I can't imagine any 18-25 year old wearing Quacker factory or some Susan Graver polyester stretchy pant suit.
I don't care how old a host is. I don't really care what the host says. If I see an item I like, NO host is going to sell me one way or another ... I'm a big girl and have done my fair share of shopping to know crap from a treasure.
HSN tends to lean toward that crowd of older women in Florida who wear lots of glitz and sparkle. Again, that is NOT the 18-25 crowd.
Barbi
12-23-2008, 09:00 AM
Age doesn't make a difference to me--I can learn from or enjoy presentations by either young or old. What I hate is boring (think Bower-sucks, Dan Wheeler or Mary Beth Roe), repetitiveness (think JRT and Dan Wheeler) and screaming as if the Q didn't provide microphones (think JRT). I loved Kathy Levine, and of all the younger hosts who have come along, Sharon Faetsch is my favorite.
I wonder what Bob's disappearance from the line-up has done to morale at QVC--I'll bet that some of the hosts who have been around for a while are concerned about their own prospects.

I for one think most of us get better with age and we are way to fixated on youth. I saw it with my boss at work, he turned 50 and was passed over for a young 35 year old. It also happened to a person I know through my job he to at 59 was passed over for a thirty something young guy. It happens and it shouldn't. But I still think Bob had a lot moe than age against him. Sometimes it all boils down to the almighty dollar.

I have to agree with you Manny. I think older people are more seasoned and experienced from their many years of experience. I also think they should vary their kitchen shows: how about meals in 30 minutes or less? Dinners you can prep before hand and then refrigerate to just pop in the oven after work? An hour of slow cooker recipes? An hour of pressure cooker recipes? Low calories meals? Meatless meals? These are just a few ideas, and they could just keep hawking their products throughout the shows...

Bob and Mary Beth are almost certainly the highest paid - high 6 figures - of all the hosts. If his contract was expiring at year's end, they probably declined to renew it or offered him a big PAY CUT and he declined to renew for less money. They could pay 3 of the new younger hosts for what Bob was making. They needed to get rid of Bob or Mary Beth and they would look far worse if they fired her. The Q must really be hurting financially.

I'm sure that MBR has a nice income from the Q but Bob really wasn't on all that much so I'm sure his paycheck would reflect his hours on air. He does own a restaurant and I'm sure that was/is his major 'bread winner' income. He may have left of his own free will, people do that on occasion. Just because he was 'sad' doesn't mean he got the axe. I'm sure that he will miss his fellow hosts and the vendors. I left a job after 25 years and I was very sad about leaving my fellow co-workers. Its usually the people you work with not the job that makes it an enjoyable workplace.

Well. Merry F'ing Christmas.
The only thing I can add to the speculation is that Bob's start date was late in the year so the Christmas timing may be a coincidence. It's just the way these people are going. No respect at all for the host or the viewers. He was liked by some, hated by others and some did not care either way. (Which is the case with all hosts.)
The pre-taped message kills me. Were they afraid that Bob was going to do something against FCC regulations? They had to approve of his farewell before they would show it? Jesus, QVC. Get your collective corporate shit together and pull your fingers out of your asses. If you need pointers, please refer to this website.
I thought Bob would retire after his anniversary so the fact that he was there beyond that still amazes me.

Bob Bowersox was a little too laidback for me, but he did know his stuff with regard to cooking. As far as seniority goes, I believe Pat James DeMentri and Dan Hughes have more seniority than Mary Beth and JRT. I have a feeling that Antonella Nestor is being groomed to take his place. I CANNOT tolerate her with that cackle and those big teeth. She needs a new hairdo and she also needs to lose weight! If she gets the kitchen show, OFF it goes.
I agree with one of the earlier postings that some of the more senior show hosts have extremely large salaries and when Management looks to make cuts, they go after these people. However, that could be a bad move. Some of the newer show hosts are pretty bad. Case in point -- I refer to Shawn Killinger as Patti Reilly Junior. She rambles on and on and interupts everyone. Then she apologizes and proceeds to cut some else off. Mary Beth made a comment the other week regarding a special show she will be hosting weekday afternoons beginning in January so I doubt she will be let go. I think she and Lisa R are probably their top producers.
If QVC wants to make my day -- CAN PATTI REILLY.

I don't think QVC is intended to be The Food Network, as they only sell cookware, utencils and the like, so I don't think they need a seasoned chef or cook to host the food shows. They have that guy (I forget his name) who is usually there cooking up recipes for the pressure cooker, etc. I think he's with Cooks Essentials. I think Antonella would be a great host. I also don't know what her big teeth (I hadn't noticed) have to do with her ability as a host and her uniqueness as an individual.
I loved Bob in the Kitchen. I bought alot of stuff from him. He was quite and calm. He wasn't loud or boistrous as like some of the other host(jane Tracey). She gets on my nerves. I have never bought anything while she is on the air.

My only negative thing on Antonella doing cooking shows: tie the hair back and do not wear rings/bracelets.
I watched her make the potatoe candy and she finally removed her rings but the bracelets clanked against the bowl and were in the way. On her ability: She worked that candy/dough until it was the right texture. She did not panic or give up. She has confidence in her skills.

I worked in food service for 25 years at our local university and most of the hosts/vendors have no idea about sanitation or if they do they sure don't demonstrate that they do. I wouldn't eat a thing that any of them make. Lets see...pick up the raw chicken and throw it in the pan and then wipe your hand on a towel and then pick up some veggies for the salad. EUWWWW!!! Ha ha, I was right! I'm just glad it's not Rick D. He's too much of a boob in the kitchen. I mean, when BB was on, I always called it "In the Kitchen with Boob" but I think David V. will do fine in that position.
Also, does David V. have more seniority than Rick D.? I know both he (David) and Jill just celebrated their 15th anniversary on QVC.

I like David, I really do, but I liked the idea of rotating the hosts every Sunday.. I think that would be a good show. Also can you imagine how David must feel, being the one to tell the world that Bob will no longer be on QVC, then he is the one that replaces him... That has to be hard for Bob Bowersox and for David as well...

I wonder why Jill doesn't host more kitchen segments, seems she would be good. She and David would be a hoot together.

QUOTING FROM POSTER: 'SkinsFan;1815795 (Post Number)
Bob just came on a pretaped video (because he was attending his daughter's game nd couldn't attend in person) and said he was leaving OVC. I thought he looked sad and seemed unsure of his future plans.
There were no watches, flowers, or a cake, only a taped goodbye message. Only mentions of Bob's love of chocolate by David during the show. I believe he was given a pink slip; his appearance did not look like his departure was voluntary.
How awful to be fired 5 days before Christmas!

I THINK IT IS REALLY SAD ABOUT BOB. HE REALLY KNOWS HIS COOKING SHOWS.I ORDERED QUITE A BIT FROM QVC WHEN BOB WAS DOING HIS SHOW.I HOPE QVC DOES NOT START GETTING RID OF THE OLDER HOSTS.THEY ARE BETTER HOSTS THAN THE NEWER ONES.

It's apparent for me it was a sudden decision, whether he was forced to leave or chose to I guess QVC will keep confidential. But, if he had planned to leave, with his tenior, I'm sure he would have been given the opportunity to say his farewells early on and in typical (Kathy Levine) fashion, I remember the send off they gave her. And he would have disclosed his decision with the audience days or weeks before because I think typically people like the attention and feed back for the ego.
FYI: Also, I saw on FoxNews where QVC.com was one of the top company Christmas money makers this year.

The Q board mentioned a website www.idiotinc.com - just type in QVC in their search box. There are a number of postings from former QVC employees from West Chester who were canned in November with the big layoff - reading those was very enlightening to say the least.

I just went to that website, Rebel Mom. Wow. It's sounds like what we have all been saying all along. They just kept on doing what they thought they could get away with, meaning pushing the products they wanted to instead of sticking to the old, tried and true QVC formula. Treating employees badly is no surprise to me. It went down hill when Liberty Media came and turned it into what we see now. If I could see stress on the hosts, what was it like behind the scenes? I have wondered about that for ages. To take a huge, money making (for eveyone!!) operation and piss it away is not corporate GREED - it's corporated STUPIDITY. Everyone could benefit or suffer and the management at QVC sure made their decision obvious. Are they that dumb to think it would not come to an end? Like they will not get a pink slip like the worker bees they used and tossed aside! QVC could be turning in record sales figures every quarter but the idiots that are running it are running it into the ground.
