we have been packing up his 5 storage units on week-ends with no help...

now he calls today and he found a condo to rent two hours from here

thing is I cant stop him, he's not senile according to the Dr's just a bit of dementia and some medication issues..

He has no idea the stress he will put on me moving that far away, he's 84 in April he could fall or have a heart attack and no one would be there.

anyway nothing I can do....Dan and I are both at our breaking points.

I pray to God I never put my daughter through this..

Scoops my Dad is a spoiled spoiled man, only boy in a family of girls his younger brother died at birth, then my Mom spoiled him rotten he is a creature of others making. Your Mom would probably kick his ass out the door after a day lol

that's another thing I call him everyday twice a day, my "brother" has called him three times since Dad went in the retirement home. If I miss a day Dad gets all pouty with me but doesn't say anything about my brother not calling!

He's had them all done now, except he see's a geriatric (sp?) speSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMt on the 31st of March to have all his meds assessed.

He has a social worker I spoke to yesterday who has been very good to me, but even he said there is really nothing I can do, Dad is in the cracks so to speak, not out of it enough for me to use my POA, but not quite well enough to always make good decisions.

Awww, hell...you know what finally settled my dad down - his knees finally gave out - so he was at the mercy of all of us. He wasn't driving around drunk and whatever anymore, he wasn't moving from here to there, falling down breaking his neck. He was resigned to a wheelchair. We moved him into 'Sunset Apartments', which was an unassisted living facility, he lived there for eight years until he could no longer live without assistance, then he went to a nursing home in Spokane where my step-brother lived.

Awwwww Dani, every time you think you have him "all set" off he goes again. I will be keeping you in my prayers. It is very hard to deal with when people are in the limbo zone of not being able to take care of themselves properly, yet are enough with it that you can't make their decisions for them.

We have 2 Niece's who are going through that right now with hubby's sister. It's a long story that I am not going to get into, but she is running them ragged with this same kind of thing. They did finally get her car away from her, which was a Godsend to every one else on the highways, but then she went to a rental agency and got one from there. That one promptly went back to the agency, but they never know what she will do next.

She tells everyone that she is married to a Doctor and she was but he has been gone for about 9 years now. She insists that he is not gone and is just evasive when asked "well then, where is he"?. Most of the time she will say he is in the Operating Room and is very busy and does not have time to chat, yet her Doctor's say that she still is capable of making her own decisions. I don't know how bad it hs to get before they do something about it.

I would challenge or apply for another person/s to perform the assessment.

They often work with a point system and just a final tally of a few numbers being off (similar to the % system in school grading from passing to flunking)

could make all the difference in obtaining a revision/decision of his functionality/abilities/capabilites.

Example, my girlfriend's father 'lost points' on comprehension skills or reasoning skills as his mother tongue/first language is Polish and the medical assessor could not communicate properly so that it ended up skewing the overall results.


If you feel the social worker has truly 'fought for your Dad's case' then you have done the best you can but if you are not comfortable you do have the right or request an appeal and have the file transferred.

I did this with my Aunt. The social worker assigned to the case was going on Maternity Leave and was not truly functioning just phoning it in and not truly sympathetic or acting adequately in the role so I requested a transfer of file and what a big difference it made.

Just sharing some helpful advice that may make a difference. Sometimes we just have to fight appropriately to get desired results.

So today is your birthday, with age comes wisdom, right? We all know you will continue to do the right thing by your Dad because you couldn't do anything other than "loving."

Sit back, be content in the fact that your Dad is happy and healthy today and you had a huge part in that.
