View Full Version : Any Ideas?
Okay, I'm kinda stuck...
We ordered a custom shower door and panel...because of specs. it got downsized...and now that it's here to be installed is so much shorter than we thought it would be. We are really unhappy with it, but it's not entirely their fault. I think we are going to have to suck it up...unless somebody can think of a way out of this.
Actually, the door is ok, but the panel is way smaller than we wanted...I wish they'd just let me buy a larger panel...
I'm so not good with negotiating with people - they always make me buckle under...but I hate the idea of having something we really don't like.

What is their return policy? I would call them, talk to a manager and be honest, say it does not look right and see what he/she says on having it returned and ordering the right item.

I've been talking to them for two days now, Mon...they're not going to take it back, and we put a 50% deposit on it and we have to pay them for it, no matter what...we'll never get back what we spent...

If you ordered it with specific custom measurements, and those measurements are written on your order, then you most certainly have a case to have either your money back or an exchange for a panel with the correct measurements. That's like ordering a size 10 dress and they send you an 8...it's unacceptable. If you do have it written, and they gave you something different (it's not up to them to go ahead and change the size of an order without your approval) then they have to make it right. I would call the Better Business Bureau.
If it's not written down somewhere, or printed out, then I think you are out of luck.

How much smaller is the one you have ..from the siz you want?
Now are you talking shower door? or a side panel?
IS there anyway...you can build up from the bottom to make it fit better?
I am picturing a tile wall at the bottem...or is it glass all the way up and down?
Hard when cant see what your talking about Jinh

Jinh, the place where you bought it may have a few ideas for you.
Can you get another piece of panel that matches and get some kind of fancy divider and somehow put it together so it looks nice.
Or put some sort of ceramic brick or tile at the top.
W/O a photo it is hard to imagine and give ideas.
Sorry =(

Q:
How high is the glass shower door fitting above the various coloured ceramic side wall ?
Do you need that side panel ? It is the length of the side panel that is not fitting - not the height ??

So that peice thats on top of the wall is the panel

Yeah, Zip, the shower door will/would be the same height as the panel......
But the shower door doesn't have a header........
Jinh, it's a beautiful shower.
I imagine the shower door and the panel were to meet and be the same height matching the tiles you have on the wall and the same height as the other stall wall. Correct? Do you need the panel for support to the door?
If you don't want to order another panel, what about anchoring some hooks on the ceiling and have plants hanging down to where the panel should've been.

It would suck to do all that work and it not be what you wanted.

I don't think you need the smaller panel ?
Unless the door functions with it but I doubt it.
The door can operate on its own I imagine.
Several options:
- instead of the panel, build another row of ceramic blocks to become even with the door, therefore, eliminating the glass panel.
If, possible, this new row of installed ceramics could have a border of a sunflower head painted on each tile :)
or
Continue to build the wall, where the glass panel is but mimic the glass panel by installing some glass blocks.

Wonder if anyone needs a 63 1/8" Holcam shower door...(love the glass)...
The door is correct to hinge on the right? You can't do anything similar to glass block that would match the glass door?

Someone who is contemplating redoing a bathroom can build their specs around the measurements.

Do you even need a door ?
I have been in showers as such where the water does not esacape. Yours seems large but I cannot see where the shower fixture is posed ???

Actually there are not so bad. Micro cloths are wonderful :)
A friend of mine in Miami had a marble stall similar to Jinh's without a door. At first I thought it was weird......no privacy and I thought the bathroom would get flooded. It was perfectly fine. The fixture was in the right place.

You are good, Sammy. We talked about block, but the lady talked us out of it, because she thought it would look strange without the trim. The reason we left that side lower was for light and well, just for fun...
I wish we would have done a header....it's my fault, I just thought it would be too low, but really it would have been just fine.

Exactly, I wouldn't put the door. European style there is no door but the shower head must be strategically placed.
sam king cat
03-10-2009, 02:45 PM
I think there are ways of incorporating the glass blocks to make it function.
Options:
If you build up a border or height of glass blocks you can add a marble top to finish or finish it with the same materials used on the floor of the shower to make it cohesive looking.
or
If you think the glass block would look out of place, you could bring the look together and paint sunflower heads on the glass block to tie in the art/design factor.
or
You don't have to use a full row of glass blocks. You could alternate or make a pattern of glass blocks along with the same varied coloured tile work to make the design flow and fit the current style of your design.
Yeah. No. I want a door - it gets drafty and the dogs walk in there with you...I have to dry them off before I get dried off. lol The shower head thing (it's a big thing with all kinds of diddys on it - (hey Mon.!lol), is on the left, that's why we wanted the door hinged on the right.
I think you all are right, block is the answer, that panel just looks stupid as hell...
Now, the question, acrylic or glass block?

Clear would work as well in complimenting the glass door.
There is an option of combining clear glass blocks with adding an occasional blue and or green keeping symmetry with the existing multi colored ceramics.
I would get something plain like the Sahara Azur Flemish or the Azur Samba.
If you can't get a good blue match, I would match the shower door. Doing steps and in glass.

Jinh, in the whole scheme of things, I think it's good thing that the panel didn't work.
Your tile work is much too beautiful for the plain, old, common panel.
Btw, you owe my Dad dinner. I got so involved in this thread that I forgot he had to eat and that it was AI night.

Thanks for the Omaha Steaks. ;) Once we put a whole Cuban Christmas dinner on dry ice and sent it Fed-Ex to my sister when she was living in Denver. If I remember correctly, you've had some pretty good meals. Leftovers may not be a bad idea....at least I won't have to cook.
He got fish (filet of sole) and chips. Nothing that took too much time. He was happy.

You not what is interesting with that concept - rather than the custom designs it does mimic - you can now get rid of old outdated sliding glass shower doors and replace with this application.
Neat !
All of our 2 bedroom apartments have 2 bathrooms one of which has a shower stall. The doorway opening in the stall is not wide enough for this look.

Gosh, I see the problem. One side is shorter than the other. I hope it can be taken care of Jinh or maybe you could get a carpenter in there and do something with it. Unless you already have a carpenter or are you doing the work yourselves?
The shower is lovely though, gotta say that.

Cindy, one wall is supposed to be shorter then the other. The difference in height was supposed to be made up by the panel (shown in the picture). Since that fell short, that's why we were suggesting she finish off the wall in glass block.
On another note, how are you feeling?

If I wanted the look of the current panel I think that I would call the company that made it, explain the situation and ask for suggestions; can this one be used to lessen the cost of having to start completely over or do you have to start over with a whole new panel. They would be able to tell you right away.
I know myself and would have a hard time settling if I wasn't satisfied especially after all of the hard work that has already been done.

Yes, I agree that is what I thought.
Maybe, incorporate or place a row of glass block over the other wall (sunflower design) - could tie the entire look and make it more symmetrical.
(I have issues with symmetry/balance) in design. - but that is just my preference.
I am sure either end result will be nice. Your work is well done :)

Thanks Sam...
Well, the tile on the back wall and the tall wall with the sunflower is the same height 75"...
The short wall is 63" so I would put block up 12" on the short wall and it would be even...see, that's why I wanted a 12" panel - NOT a 6" panel - but they won't let me have a 12" panel! Rats!lol

Not sure. Often the glass blocks are placed on a ceramic floor making a half wall , etc....
So I think the installation process would allow the glass base adhere to the existing ceramic base. Probably no problem using the materials/installation process recommended from manufacturer.

I like the white granite and keeping it white/drawers/base. You can add the secondary colours (blues, greens) in accessories to keep the theme/decor unified.

We share well and we both like our own private primping BUT I am the one who constantly has to wipe up and clean up after MrSam traces of whatever.....
I was just thinking, we (MrSam) & I could have contests of WHOSE sink is cleanest. Actually, I would like to have my very own hers bathroom suite and a his a separate bathroom that we both are responsible to keep clean.
I thought that when there were two sinks there was no decision making. At the time the vanity was installed it was decided who would use which sink and that was the end of it.

So there it is...sigh...lol

I love the tile job Jinh !
I think you are so lucky to be able to make your own and being so handy.
We are always over critical of our own work...I know I am.
It will be real nice when you are done
Boy, in my next life I hope I get a brain...
This is so screwed up...I can't do block...the damn sill is 25 1/2 inches...
I wish they'd just order the f-ing panel for me!!!!!!

Zip, out of the corner of my eye, I swear your little Leprechaun is wiggling his butt and taking a pee too...I swear that's what I see...help...
Oh, well, unlike tile, glass block can't be cut...it comes in even, nominal sizes.....so.......if I do block it will be 24" - an inch and a half short...
This is making my mind (what there is of it) hurt...

OH I see
Is there anyway you can put a boarder around the glass block to make up the diff?
Something like that
LOL...Dont know WHY you see it wiggle....I have my ideas though lol

dang...that stinks....what about one of those little pieces? Or turning one sideways to create a border for that inch and a half? sort of like a right angle...hard to describe what I mean....or would that hang over the edge back into the shower?
Jinh, didn't you say you did stained glass? I think you could make a stained glass pic, with the same colors as your tiles/same theme and it would fit beautifully in there........

Gee whiz, I'll be glad when that shower stall is finished. I imagine you will be glad too though Jinh.
I was thinking the same thing that Zip was thinking, to build that wall up. I can't understand why you can't.
I would have to be there personally and see that sucker. Probably more to it than I know.

Now, THAT'S a good idea there
Thanks guys...
Well, I need to ask Shelley (she was out yesterday) if Kelly (the installer says he can put the door in without a panel. If that's the case, then I can have any kind of panel I want there (except block).
If we would have made sure that wall was 24" there wouldn't be a problem with block...I don't know how it got so off...that's what happens when you do it yourself. lol
Stained glass would be pretty there, but I don't do stained glass anymore...
Jinh, what about these places? I refuse to accept that somewhere there isn't a company that can provide what you need.
I can ask the architects who are working on a lobby renovation in one of our buildings.

Mia, nope, same old problem...those blocks just do not come in anything but even sizes....
I'm an inch and a half off...a 3/4" frame might do it though...
Thanks for trying : )

Jinh...I would pack up and move at this point lol
Just kidding...But it would cross my mind
I thought you'd be able to put the glass block in a frame and it would do the trick. It would give you the inches you need. You can paint the frame in a color you already have or to match the vanity, etc.

LOL, Zip...naw, I've been at this kinda stuff on this house for over 22 years...I'm pretty relaxed (or comatose) at this point.lol
It will get worked out...
I just wish we had paid more attention to that measurement. Anyway,, we've been using that shower for over three years without the door. What's a big bummer though, is that I finally get it ready for a door and it got all screwed up.
I should have shopped around more once they started downsizing the thing...we just didn't realize the panel would be so short. Thing is, I'm committed to this shower door...there's just no way out of it (money wise).

I don't know if we really want metal there. I was thinking treated wood. Is that possible? Then, you'd be able to paint the frame a pretty color.

Jinh -- I haven't commented, but have to say this. I still don't see anywhere that you committed to that block being that size. I think you should be able to get your money back. Also, are you working with (or do you know of) a builder who might be able to build something up if you are forced to keep the original block? I'm sure there's some creative ways to get around it, I just don't know how (which is why I have stayed out of this!). LOL!
