Los Angeles (E! Online) – Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer may have called it quits.

That's the rumor I'm hearing. A source says that the pair's on-again, off-again relationship may have ended when Aniston returned from overseas, where she was promoting Marley & Me. She returned sometime within the last week.

"He broke up with her when she got back from her European tour," the source said.

Aniston's rep did not immediately comment. Mayer's rep declined to comment on the singer's personal life.

And what are their friends saying?

One pal warns that we shouldn't be quick to assume the two are through for good. As we know, this wouldn't be the first time they've gone their separate ways.

Aniston recently opened up about love and romance to the U.K. magazine You. "Who ever said that every relationship has to last forever? That's hoping too much," said Aniston, who turned 40 exactly a month ago. "I think every relationship is a world unto itself."

As for finding the perfect partner, she said, "I don't have one and I don't think it exists."

Aniston and Mayer went public for the first time at the Oscars at the end of last month. Backstage at the Kodak, Aniston told Gayle King, who was interviewing them for her pal Oprah's show, that she was "very happy." Later in the night, they strolled arm-in-arm into the Vanity Fair post-show party at the Sunset Tower hotel.

Most recently, Aniston was spotted on Monday at the same hotel grabbing a bite to eat at the Terrace restaurant. She'll be jetting to New York City in the spring to shoot The Baster, in which she stars opposite Jason Bateman as an unmarried 40-year-old who decides to have a baby with her best friend.

Mayer, meanwhile, has been in the studio working on a new album.

It just seems to me if she wanted a child she would have had one by now if she really really wanted to.

Beach- I want a child, not when I was in my 20's, but as I have gotten older- but it is just not that easy to have one, many things to take into consideration- and sometimes just because you want something it just does not always work out the way you want- due to my age I probably will not have a child, but that does not take away that I would like to be a mom- so I feel for Jennifer, not everyone wants to be a single mom- the good news for her is that she does have money so in that aspect it would be easier for her, but unfortunately, it just is not always happen the way you want it to.

I think that if she wanted a child she would have a child one way or another already. It is okay not to want a child too.....maybe she really doesn't but she is in the public eye....that changes everything.

We do not know what her situation is. It is her business not mine. Whatever anyone wants is fine but actors need to be careful.

Heck gay actors not long ago were still marrying women for "public image".

breakfast was good....the restaurant is really a trip...waitresses that are loud and funny and the cook comes out and sings to us....today it was "Come to My Window" lol. There are little cafe curtains between the booths...so today we hear him start singing and then he parts the curtains and sticks his head into our booth. so funny!!

Then we got to see the group of firefighters that come every Tuesday and Thursday after they play hockey.... we razzed them a bit about losing to the police in a charity hockey game that we went to last Saturday night. Guess we missed a good hockey brawl. We left early because the game started late and my mother and my girlfriend were freezing!!!

So lots of action at breakfast today....my mother is feeling good, she had her oatmeal with raisins and her "eatinghealthynow" dry toast. lol

I thought she had just turned 40. Is that too old to adopt? Besides, she can adopt from anywhere in the world. I know somebody who adopted twin boys from Russia.

For some reason, it doesn't surprise me that it's ended between her and Mayer.

Jennifer Aniston vows no more pity parties over her 2005 split with Brad Pitt.

"I don't regret any of that time with Brad and I'm not here to beat myself up about it," she tells the March 17 issue of British magazine Hello!. "They were seven very intense years together, and it was beautiful and complicated."

Adds Aniston, 40, "I will love Brad for the rest of my life - you can't take away good memories."

Aniston famously told Vanity Fair that Pitt lacked "a sensitivity chip" for orchestrating a W magazine shoot that showed him and Angelina Jolie as a 1960’s-style married couple.

These days, she says she hopes to be on better terms with her ex.

"I really do hope that we’ll be good friends again at some point," she tells the magazine. "You can survive anything - human endurance is unbelievable. Aniston says she wishes she didn't go through relationships in front of the world.

I want to be happy and loved, and not settling for something second best and less than I deserve," she says. "But a relationship of and by itself is not what is going to make this gal survive - a relationship is the cherry on the top of the cake..."

She also says she still hopes for children one day.

"The women who inspire me are the ones with families and children and who keep on working. Why would I wish to limit myself?" she says. "I want to have it all. At the moment, I'm doing pretty well. Were there times when I had a little 'pity party' for myself? Of course. Who hasn't done that?"

OMG are you kidding? For a while last year US magazine would have a section with Life and Style and In Touch magazine....and show all the inaccuracies they would print...and of course follow up with how US got the stories correct. I have always wondered about some of the tabloid stories, but I usually took the entertainment magazines...like People and Life & Style at face value...now I look at all of them with some skepticism.
