LOS ANGELES – Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.

"She was a brilliant and witty woman," said Watt, who was Arthur's personal assistant for six years. "Bea will always have a special place in my heart."

I really enjoyed her on Golden Girls. She was terrific comedy actress.

Oh I loved her as Dorothy Zbornak...not 5 minutes before I read the news on MSN my daughter and I were talking about the Golden Girls episode that was on this morning...that's 'our' show!! :-( RIP Bea Arthur

Estelle Getty died last July, I think. She played Bea Arthur's Mom on the show.

Very sad news, but she lived a long life- I did not realize she was 86 years old. I loved her on Golden Girls, and still watch the repeats on occasion.

I think she had the best comedic timing other than Lucille Ball. She could get more laughs with just a "look" than anyone else I can think of.
