I don't know if any of you have heard about the Catholic priest in Miami (Padre Alberto Cutié) who the paps 'caught' with his girlfriend at the beach? The Archdiocese of Miami dismissed the priest of his obligations in his parish until everything resolved.

I can understand that he wasn't celibate and would decide to leave the priesthood; but change religions overnight?

One word: fruitcake.
No really, I don't know -- I was reading his story before and just shook my head.
I know men who have been priests and have decided that they couldn't be celibate any more (it happens) -- so they left the priesthood, but remained Catholic.
I can't imagine changing your whole belief system (especially since he was so immersed in it) overnight for a woman. Even though it wasn't really overnight, but you know what I mean......
I don't get it, either.
Having lived in Miami, I knew who he was and my Mom watched is TV show. Very well known, respected and liked. Actually, he was a money making machine for the Archidiocese. Not to mention that when a parish had low attendance at Mass, they would transfer him to that parish and he'd turn the parish around.
I wonder if the woman is really in love with him or if it was the 'thrill of being with a priest'?

Here's part of the real live version story..........
The celebrity priest from Miami whose fame turned to shame when photos captured him entangled with a woman on the beach, admitted Monday on CBS's Early Show that they'd had a two-year affair.
The Rev. Alberto Cutie, who lost his church and radio show last week after the release of the photos, also said while he still believes in celibacy for priests, he thinks it should be optional.
"I do believe that people should be given the option to marry or not to marry in order to serve God," he said. "But the Church, see, has tradition and practices that are part of wanting to do what is right. I think we've all have ideals, and we have ways of living, and we want to do things right. But the truth is, sometimes we fall short. And I fell short."
Known by some as "Father Oprah," the 40-year-old Cuban-American priest was the head of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Miami Beach, as well as president of Radio Paz and Radio Peace, Catholic 24-hour radio stations run by the diocese.
On the show, Cutie said he and the woman are in love, and did have sex.
Now, he said he must decide whether fulfill her desire to get married.
Although Cutie said he believes the celibacy oath should be optional, he was contrite for having broken it.
"I don't want to be the anti-celibacy priest," he said. "I think that's unfortunate. I think it's a debate that's going on in our society, and now I've become kind of a poster boy for it. But I don't want to be that. I believe that celibacy is good, and that it's a good commitment to God. This is something I've struggled with. And something that I never expected to become a public debate."
Last week, many of his supporters held a rally for him in front of his Miami Beach church.
The photos ran in TVnotas, which featured the priest in blue shorts, lying on his back next to a woman in a bathing suit on Miami Beach. One of the roughly two dozen images -- which were taken over a three-day period -- shows them kissing.

Well, for one thing......
a poster boy he is not.
Reading that raised my blood pressure all over again. He hasn't been a priest for some time, if you read that carefully. He stepped all over his vows and the promises he made to God and the Catholic Church.

Mia, One reason that he picked the Episcopalian Church could be that it is very close in doctrine and in the way that the service is conducted. My Mother was Episcopalian and if you go to what they call a High Episcopalian service you would hardly be able to see any difference than being at a Mass. I do not remember that they have Confession but they do allow their Priests to be more secular and marriage is accepted.
I do know of a former Catholic Priest who became Episcopalian because he fell in love and got married, but also wanted to still be a Pastor.
I am going to do some checking tomorrow and read up on what the differences really are between the two. I was brought up in my Father's church and didn't know a lot about my Mother's church. We usually only went there on Easter. Why then I have no idea.

I meant -- he hasn't been acting as a priest for sometime -- it goes way above and beyond falling for a woman -- or not wanting to be celibate -- if they have already had sex WHILE he was a priest.
He lost me right there.

Sitter, I was watching CNN earlier and they mentioned the same things as you.
Considering he had all the women falling all over him, she must be very 'special' for him to do this.

I am more comfortable with religions that allow women to be equals.
I was born Roman Catholic but cannot relate. I have a lovely relationship with an Anglican Minister & his wife. They both serve as Ministers in the same Anglican church.

You snuck in on me Sitter :)
I can see your points -- but (imo, at least) -- this was a man who got too big for his britches (in more ways than one :) and got caught with his pants down. I wonder if he would have switched if he hadn't gotten caught?
I don't know, and like I said, he doesn't have to answer to me.

Perhaps getting caught just sped up his decision to change churches....
I've always heard that Episcopalian and Catholicism are VERY similar... His decision doesn't seem out of line to mel...
I haven't read the article, but it's no skin off my nose, lol... I hope they live happily ever after...
Better to leave the church and do the right thing.... Too bad those with a predilection for young boys won't do the same, instead of using their position to prey on the innocent, and only suffer a slap on the wrist and a transfer for getting caught.
;0))

I agree. And to me a Christian is a Christian. I hope they live happily ever after too.

so selfish...sorry but its true...
why i say that is not because he got a girlfriend on the side...it was because he wanted both to be a priest (where everyone is looking up to him) and have his fun...
all he had to do is leave his orders...after all marriage is a sacrament too.....
what really gets me is that people say that "priest should be married"...well it isnt like someone held a gun to their head to become a preist...the reasons why a preist isnt married is because of the example of paul.."be ceibent like me" and it is very hard to give equal attention to the flock and to the wife one will be neglected..
all this guy had to do if he wanted to serve and be married is to become a deacon...deacons can be married and they can do almost what a priest can...
the guy is not taking responsibilty in his actions...he is trying to place blame on the church (which is so common) by changing to another religion...

yeah the church has a bad rap of the bad priest...only because the church is big is the reason why it seems so many..after all the church has been here for a great long time......when in compared to all history it isnt as much...as one would think..if one thinks about it that is...
it seems that way because it is broadcast each time...
there is just the same amount of bad ministers in other churches...and bad teachers.. if not more in other churches or and schools...but doesnt hit front line news (well maybe the teachers not all but some you do hear about) because their churches isnt that big...think about it...when michal jackson and jennifer grey got their noses done...it was big news....but hey...everybody is getting that done every day..their names are not in the media...because they are not big like them...you know?
i agree the preist or anybody for that matter should pay for their dirty deeds...it shouldnt be the reason why one doesnt become a catholic...my reasoning on becoming a catholic was the history and the truth...well what I believe is to be true...not to mention i do get it spiritually (which is the most important thing i believe that if one gets their church spiritually that is where they need to be)...i knew about the bad rap that the catholics recieved because of the media (the media also likes to get things wrong too)...i didnt think twice on it because it isnt them that makes the church...there is bad apples every where...just like what Christ says "dont worry I will be there and wolves in sheep clothing will be among you"...remember the parable that Christ said about the weeds and the crops? let the weeds grow with the crops and during harvest time they will be sorted out (the weeds) and burn...
it isnt really that big of a surprise because we were warned from the begining about the bad people in the church...
it is the person that needs to pay not the church for the church doesnt teach that to the sicko priests...
they will have to answer to the Judge himself...
