View Full Version : How will new start ups affect JTV??

We are seeing allot of remarks on perrys and other new shopping networks. I wonder how these new networks will affect JTV's cut of the pie. Apparently perrys claims to be growing the fastest right now, but when you are new it's a pretty easy statement to make. JTV, although having a bit of an image problem with now, still has somewhat of a loyal viewers hip and a much larger one than most of the new networks. Many of the people that keep buying from them probably don't read this board and know nothing of the bad dealings, plus they rely on allot of new shoppers. Will JTV be forced to compete differently to try and stay ahead of these new networks or will any of these new networks make it past the holidays, btw...I am not trying to be sarcastic about that statement. Most of the new networks in the last few years have failed miserably. Shoppingsouce, Dennis Dans network.

That's a very good question. When I first started at JTV, they gave new hires an info pack with statistics about the home shopping industry. Around the world, up to 100 home shopping companies start up and fail, every year. It is a very difficult business to break into.
Concerning JTV, only time will tell. With the economy being what it is, and with gold prices on the rise, many jewelry companies as well as jewelry retailers are being forced out of business. Remember, companies like JTV have to pay current gold price for their newly manufactured jewelry. That means higher cost passed on to the buyer, or they can't compete and go out of business.
You are right, that when you are new, there is no place to go but up. However, Estate Jewelry is gaining popularity in a big way. You are starting to see it in more and more places. Even in Knoxville, I saw a commercial for a local jeweler that is now offering "Estate Jewelry". This trend is just beginning.
Since estate jewelry is not tied to the current price of gold, it is a much better value, and in this economy people still want to buy beautiful jewelry, but they are looking for more of a value than ever before. Also, in estate jewelry you can have a piece of jewelry that is of a higher karatage of gold, heavier gram weight, and created with higher quality, than a similar looking newly manyfactured piece offered at the same price.
All of this forms a nich that Perry's is in the perfect position to fill.
Perry's also has items that very few can offer; Authentic antique jewelry, GENUINE art deco (not reproduction), coral jewelry (only available from an estate jeweler), cameos, antique and estate pocket watches (another re-emerging trend), and so on......you get the idea.
It is a very exciting time for this company, and I am thankful to be a part of it. There is something in the works right now that is getting ready to really propel Perry's to the next level, and open us up to a MUCH broader audinece. I can't say just yet, but I will say this; There are other major networks out there that are seeing this trend in estate jewelry and want be a part of it.
Stay tuned.......
Oh yea, this weekend is our "Christmas in July" sale-a-bration. Big opportunities only for this weekend.
Remember, if you don't have Dish, you can catch us live on the internet at (perrysestatejewelry.tv)

JTV and other long time networks still have name recognition and market penetration. Does Perrys have a live 24/7 broadcast yet? That's going to be your biggest hurdle is getting into new markets and staying there. You might be severing an underserved niche but if there is nobody watching the sales are not going to be enough to keep the ship going. (playing devils advocate, if you read my threads I am certainly not a JTV fan), I just understand they are still a big player and have a big advantage, for now.

Chris... Thank you for taking the time to answer questions that we might have... as you can see not to many host... past or present are answering on the boards... I believe (my opinion) that if more host would become apart of boards like this it could open for more consumers to focus on what they are selling. JTV is reading the board but are only showing up as a guest... and making snide remarks or just reading and not saying anything... By you and Nicole coming on the boards this will open the market for "Perrys" customers old and new... Continue to keep in contact and I believe like you "Perrys" will soar! Especially if they listen to the consumer! Good Luck!

Quality always wins in the end. JTV might have the name and the numbers but how much of the merchandise that they sell comes back to them due to quality issues? And how many of us has a pile of stuff at the bottom of our jewelry boxes that fell apart and couldn't be sent back?? I know that I do. Estate Jewelry has proven itself. I like to call it previously loved jewelry and it has lasted a long time so we know it will stand up to wear. As for the hands that show it, it is the jewelry we are buying, not the hands....if someone has another job or hobby or whatever that takes a toll on beautiful perfect well manicured hands, I say who cares! At least he has a life!!! Perfection is hard to maintain....I look at the fingers that are typing this post and I just SIGH!!

Also, keep in mind that JTV did not start out on top...they started by selling everything from sports stuff to Beanie Babies to skin care....the graphics and lighting and cameras were primitive.....I know, I've been watching that long. It took a long time to get to where they are now and I am afraid they are losing ground unless someone wakes up and changes things. I often see something I would like to order and stop myself because of all of my recent problems with quality and service.

Well, tuczontanz, I was going to respond......but GemGeek and sistah2me both beat me to it. They both said pretty much said what I was going to say.
I know how ACN started. We've all heard the stories and seen the pics., (those of us who weren't there). I can tell you, based on that, we definitely have a leg up compaired to where ACN started.
Also realize this; just because a company is big, doesn't mean that they are making any money. I will not comment on what I've heard about JTV.
Perry's has VERY little overhead, which is one reason why our prices are so low, and so it doesn't take much for us to be doing very well. The customers that we are welcoming now, on a daily basis, have all been extremely satisfied with their experience. This is all happening in the slowest time of year. We are establishing a very loyal customer base, so, come the busy season in the fall, we are looking to REALLY take off.
As I said in the above post, keep listening for some BIG news......and this is only our seventh month in operation!!!!

Looks like Perrys vision is what JTV used to have. They lost sight of that and now are paying the price for it. I hope your company takes notice of this and regardless of how big you might get stick with what is making you money. It will be interesting to see what happens to JTV. Will they make changes to keep customers, will they continue like they are and just stagnate, or will this be there last year in business.

You're right, it is similar to how they started, from a vision standpoint. That is why I chose to join their team.
Concerning JTV, only time will tell. Some say that it is too late....others are not so sure.
Believe me when I say that Perry's is not the only network that is watching JTV, and learning from their example of what NOT to do.

SO sad.... JTV was the original home shopping network I ever watched.... before ever peeking at any of the others.... I always felt like they were likd of like an "old friend"... I hate to see them go down the tubes but it really does not seem like they are making the best choices lately.
Based on what I read on this board, a couple days ago I tried to log on at Perry's but it seemed they are only on a few hours a day. Then I tried again later, and someone was showing a sword or something, but I couldn't get any sound. Weird. It seems pretty hit & miss to me; but Chris Cooper's plugs on here are definitely working in terms of spreading the interest to those of us who are becoming disillusioned elsewhere!

Yea, Bumbrage, I know it sounds crazy, but that's what's so much fun about working at Perrys. We fly by the seat of our pants sometimes. We made a decision to make the After Hours Blowout show a Friday and Sunday only event. Unfortunately, the schedule did not get changed in time, so you saw the knife show that usually comes up after us. It's nice to be able to make decisions, and not have to wait a month for it to go through a commitee or endless meetings.
IT IS so similar to how JTV/ACN got started. There is a small group of deticated people that are working together to make something great. Our customers send in pics of themselves and their family, and some keep us updated on what's going on in their lives. Many customers call in durring the show to tell us that they received their item, and how much they loved it. If you call into the show to say hello, we say your name and give you a shout out on TV. It's so cool. We also, personally, answer all emails that come in to us.
Our broadcast hours are 6pm-9pm (eastern) Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The "After Hours Blowout Show" is 9pm-10pm on Friday and Sunday and is "internet only".
The broadcast is on Dish Ch.225, but you can catch any of the shows live at (perrysestatejewelry.tv) anytime we are on.
Hope that helps, and thanks for your comments.

Chris,
In my humble opinion, if you, Nicole and Cheryl, who I considered JTV's best and brightest are a part of this new project, it can't go anywhere but UP!!!

i don't believe for 1 minute it will affect Jtv. I was there at the begginning Chris as a Showhost(Kim Melton). I did not get to meet you. Anyway, we were wild and zany and the company had incredible growth. I worked with Caroline for Gem Country and I did a couple of shows with Ernie. It's 2 different type of venues now and they don't have the coverage that Jtv has. I worked there for 7 years and I did every time slot that the President Bob Hall and Bill and Jerry asked me to. Much more laid back in those days. I used to do the Red Carpet Shows with Frank and we had more fun doing the "Lucy and Little Ricky show".When the mics were shut off, it was usually because I said a blooper and didn't know it cos i was in my sales mode and my talking was moving faster than my brain.Caroline and i had to turn our mics off alot to laugh. When you are on the air, You are under and enormous amount of pressure, Whether sales goals or the preasure I put on myself. So I had to be zany. Some like a more structured presentation and some like fun. Can't please everyone so I just had to be Kim and still am. Don't ask me my opinion on things Cos then I will have to preach. I remember a caller called in and asked the quality of the diamonds on .25 point ring for 49.00 and I said 49.00 worth. Opinions?

Hi Kim,
I remember you and just gave you lots of rep points for honesty about the diamonds. That's all we want as customers and JTV has changed a lot since you left.I got so tired of sending junk back that I don't order anymore. It's sad because i was a good customer.

You don't here that kind of honesty from the current group of hosts. They tell you that kind of ring is an "estate" piece, the kind you find in New York, the kind they "only wish the could own". btw...why do hosts constantly say they wish they could have this or that, they work right there, you would think if they couldn't buy the stuff they could find someone that could if they really like the stuff. When a host says they wish they could own that, it's always a big red flag to me that the stuff is junk.
