A friend of mine had given me a lot of Nutrisystem food that someone gave to him and he didn't want it, so I tried it, and most of the meals are drenched in tomato sauce. I like tomato sauce but not on all or most of my meals. I guess it's a flavor enhancer.

I tried NutriSystem years ago, and believe it or not, IMO, the best entree was the freeze dried hamburger.
Just add a bit of boiling water, and voila!
Sounds gross, but let me tell ya................when all you are eating is their other crap, this tastes like filet mignon.

I have never tried any of the packaged diet meals, but what is so hard about making a lean beef burger? Eat it with a salad and some lowfat frozen yogurt and a glass of iced tea and you have a perfectly good low cal meal. The same can be done with some fresh fish or a piece of broiled chicken. A hot beverage or soup before the meal will cut your appetite. Am I missing something here?

Pebbles, I think with programs like NutriSystem, it's the convenience in that everything is done for you, that gets people.
You don't have to think about calories, preparation, shopping, ect., so it DOES have its appeal.
I would never suggest this to anyone however, after trying it.
It's really a tough way to lose weight, as most of this stuff is disgusting.
It's better to just make the time for a balanced diet, as you say.

The big thing with Nutrisystem seems to be the portion control. All the food when shown on tv looks so delicious and there seems to be so much of it. A friend of mine was on the program a few years back and her main complaint was that the portions were too small. To me the big appeal of Nutrisystem is the convenience - you don't have to think. I agree with LL, better to take responsibility and do it yourself.

OK, I get it. But it's no wonder dieters have a relapse after going off Nutrisystem. Regular homemade food must taste so good to them that they binge. Having food sent to you teaches you nothing about making your own healthy low cal meals.

Pebbles, in my case, I relapsed when going off the program, b/c I was used to having 3 meals, plus 2 snacks per day with NutriSystem.
Granted, they were much smaller portions, but when I replaced them with regular food, I gained because it was simply too much food for my activity level at that point in time, as I was ill for a couple of years and coudn't exercise.. RM is right in that it's all about portion control, if one can learn to eat less of the food that they enjoy. Not so easy.
One interesting E-book I would recommend is by Marna Goldstein Thall. Called Thin From Within.
A bit new agey, but definately a good way to look at food and losing weight.

LOL! That is soooo FUNNY! It is a struggle to get rid of extra pounds! Maybe the tomato sauce is for the added nutrition , LOL! God know what is in their processed stuff.

Oh Lord, Ditto! Their food is probably 3/4 preservatives, additives, chemicals, ect.
How else to make it last through a nuclear war? Even then, you probably woudn't want to eat it unless you had to. :D
I think it's alway easier to disguise crap in something like tomato sauce or some type of sauce.

What they really don't bother telling you is that you have to supplement their foods with stuff you purchase. You can't just eat their nasty stuff, but you have to supply your own fruits, veggies and salads. I tried this stuff and lasted about three weeks. The food was nasty. Those dried scrambled eggs were awful. The soups were bad and their noodle dishes were really poor. I found their pretzel-like snacks to be way too salty tasting. But way too much of their food is tomato based and if you have a hyatial hernia like I do, it irritates it something awful.
