View Full Version : The Joan Rivers Roast fiasco...

Anyone watch this piece of crap???
OMG.
I can't remember when I've been more disgusted by anything I've viewed in recent memory.
Still, like a train wreck, I couldn't look away. It was incredible that they got away with such horrible jokes, not to mention the disgusting racial/sexual taunts.
Joan looked clearly uncomfortable to me............smiling very forcibly it seemed.
The remarks by some guy named Ross and by Gilbert Gottfried were the worst. I cringed when he brought up Robin Quivers sexual abuse and used it as part of his routine.
Joan Rivers should've applied more class than to be involved in such a disgraceful display.

Linda Lou, my cable company doesn't carry Comedy Central..but from your descripton of the show, apparently, I didn't miss anything..It does sound disgusting, and as Goss said on one thread, where's Dean Martin's Roast when you need him..BTW,Linda,did I tell you about the time Dean Martin Roasted Porky Pig??? Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, dropped by for a quick bite!!! HA HA HA!!!!!!

You actually felt sorry for Joan. And, I can remember how she unmercifully used to ridicule Elizabeth Taylor and others in her act years ago. Only difference is they were not sitting there in front of her. What goes around comes around but Joan is laughing all the way to the bank.

No, you didn't miss a thing, in fact, I found it pretty upsetting.
Clearly, most involved were pretty uncomfortable.
Except for Kathy Griffin.
Nothing seems to ruffle that nut's feathers.

The roasts aren't funny anymore. They are barely disguised acts of sadism at this point. I doubt that they get much of an audience now. Not my cup of tea nor my idea of humor.

You know, if it weren't for her QVC connection, I probably wouldn't have watched it.
I was curious to see how bold she'd get in that kind of situation.
It was so down and dirty, even Carl Reiner felt compelled to end his routine by saying the "c" word.
Stupid.

No, he didn't actually call anyone the "c" word, Jules.
He just kept kinda pacing nervously back and forth and the podium, saying "I gotta say it, gotta say it just once".....................and he did and walked off to much applause.

I'm a Joan fan, so yes I watched. I've never seen a roast before so I was a little shocked at how dirty it was, but I was prepared.
My least fave part was Carl Reiner cursing. He said back in his day when he was doing the Dick Van Dyke show, "pregnant" was a word they couldn't say. "Look at us now".
The only time Joan looked uncomfortable IMO, was when anyone made a comment about her jewelry line for QVC, otherwise ... she was laughing along with them. She has said time and time again, if you can't take it, don't dish it ... so she knew what was coming!
I thought it was odd that most of the show was the roasters, roasting the other roasters. Each comic talked for about 5-10 minutes, where only the last 1 or 2 minutes were dedicated to Joan.

If you have to stoop that low, you're not funny. Listening to that filth makes me feel like I need to take a shower. Lenny Bruce started the whole down and dirty thing. He was a drunk and an alcoholic. He reached the point where all he could do was go onstage and rant the filthiest stuff he could think of.

I don't think it's stooping, its just a different kind of funny that's not for everyone.
Maybe a year or so ago, I saw Bob Sagat's (the dad from Full House) special on HBO. I never in a million years would have expected him to be that dirty in his act!

BeeKeeper,
Did you not find the references to Robin Quivers sexual abuse by her Father not crossing a line?
I have never, ever seen that in a roast.
One of the things the asshat said was "Robin was SO ugly, her Father had to fantasize he was abusing her Sister"!
Disgusting, and my only regret is that I sat through it. I think most of the comments about Joan were just a springboard for nasty things that had nothing to do with her at all.

We posted about this roast somewhere else here last week ... I wish I could find it.
Of course I found the things said to/about Robin disgusting, but like I said ... before, not all comedy is for everyone. She gave some pretty good digs to the others too, so again ... if you can give it, you'd better be able to take it.
Some people don't like potty jokes, but Judd Apatow and Seth Rogan are making millions with them. Doesn't make it right, just shows that we live in a different time. When I was growing up, cursing was almost unheard of (I'm only 40). If someone said sh*t or f*ck ... it was really something! Today, the younger generation use these words as often as "the" and "and". It's not my thing, believe me ... but it must be working for many. Like it or not (and I don't), it's the way things are now. All I can say is the dreaded "change the channel" on this kind of thing.
I watched it only because it was Joan Rivers. If it were anyone else, I probably wouldn't want to see/hear it.

You know, I'm hardly the sheltered type, but I think that it's precisely because Joan is older, that makes this stuff all the more weird and shocking to me. I think I was really thrown by the content of her roast, thought it'd be tamer.
If it were a roast for say, Ozzy Osborne, well, I would'nt be watching it, but I'm sure the expletives and whatnot would fly.
Yeah, I gotta agree with Beekeeper on this. I think most of it was inappropriate but it's a warning for next time, lol. Just change the channel and ignore.
I do have a sick sense of humor (watched all the old roasts and the newer ones for William Shatner, Larry the cable guy, flavor flav, lol) but the Robin Quivers jokes were SICKENING and WAY over the top.
I ALMOST changed the channel......lol

Was it Gottfried or the Ross guy who made that revolting comment about Robin?? There are no words to describe how low it is to make light of sexual abuse. As the only person on Stern's show with any class and something worthwhile to say, Robin was always refreshing. I caught the end of the roast, and it was definitely not funny. It was low-brow, vulgar "humor" that missed the mark.

I think it was Gottfried who made the jokes about her Dad fantasizing about her sister, cuz Robin was so ugly. Really rotten ... I never liked this guy, but this was way over the top and uncalled for!
Here's a list of the roasters:
Carl Reiner (Comedy legend)
Brad Garrett (Everybody loves Raymond)
Mario Cantone (Sex and the City)
Tom Arnold (Roseanne's ex)
Robin Quivers (Howard Stern show)
Jeffrey Ross (I know him from Dancing with the Stars)
Greg Giraldo (No idea who this guy is)
Gilbert Gottfried (wack-o)
Whitney Cummings (No idea who she is)
Linda Lou
08-19-2009, 01:15 PM
It was Gottfried that made the comments to Robin.
Hers was such a forced smile, through gritted teeth, and understandably so. Sometimes, you just don't go there, not if you have a few brain cells, not for a few crummy laughs.
This was probably one of the worst of the comments, but really, most of the "jokes" were NOT funny at all. And I consider myself to have a good sense of humor, and like Pal, sometimes DO enjoy off color jokes.
As I said, I understand how bad these roasts can be, and expected that.........but not to this degree.

Stand up comedy is really difficult but I must say these roast of late have been horrible! Just read the list of nobodies she had to roast her. Carl Reiner was a comedic genius, my how the might has fallen. Notice Mel Brooks did nor participate. I could not sit through it. I tried to watch Bob Sagets roast and it was pretty bad but not as bad as Joan's . The most recent one was Cloris Leachman, she is very talented and still a hoot and so much more graceful than Joan. It got down and dirty but that's what these no talents have to resort to , Gilbert has NEVER been funny.

Still reading old threads...
I know roasts are a little rough but this was vulgar. Joan got roasted which is OK regardless of her past comedy routines so I have no problem with a roast per se. The object is to be roasted by other stand ups so you have to expect a few gasps. Some of the jokes were not funny at all and it just seemed forced. There were too many jokes about the other roasters and only a few at the end of each speech about Joan. I even expected Joan to be better dressed than she was. She looks better when she's on QVC.
To be honest, to see Patti there was inappropriate. She squeezed an invite out of Joan on the air and I would have never attended as a QVC host, invited or not. You KNOW what the evening will hold and to be seen there was surprising to me because QVC keeps a tight hold on what hosts do outside of QVC. They should have left the camera off of her or asked if she wanted to be on camera. Joan can separate her on stage and on QVC personas. I'm sure this event cost Joan some customers. I was uncomfortable.
