View Full Version : My Daughter Got Homework On Her First Day Back At School

I couldn't believe it. And they only had a 1/2 day today.
She just started high school. My little girl is growing up. I'm going to be a basket case when she goes off to college.
Awe, that really sinks it home that school is back in session.
I think they give kids WAY too much homework these days. My poor kids were bogged down for hours sometimes and it's just not right. Many times the teacher will have the kids work on something in class while they grade papers and stuff. Then they assign all this homework so they keep caught up.
I used to feel bad for my kids :(

But on the first day back?
Man....
I remember trying to pick up my daughter's back pack last year....It was so heavy, I had to go weigh it...
I put it on the bathroom scale...it weighed 17lbs...because of all of her books

I asked my daughter if the kids asked the teacher why she was giving homework so soon & she said the teacher said it was because they're in Honors classes & things are different than regular classes.
It's like they're being punished for being smart. I know they're not, but why should they get more homework because they're smart? Smart kids want to go out & 'play' with their friends after school, too.
School just started & I'm already complaining. LOL.

I have no problem with teachers giving homework on the first day. It's school, not summer camp. This is particularly true of an Honors course, where the mood and pace has to be set for the rest of the year. These kids have got to understand that they have to work hard to maintain their Honors standing.
My gripe is usually with homework assignments that are frivolous and given just for the sake of assigning homework. It's a waste of everyone's time.

One year, I asked the teachers if they had extra books that my daughter could leave at home. They had 2 books available which was great as they were very big & heavy. It helped a lot. My son was complaining his back hurt, but he wouldn't let me ask the teacher if she had extra books for him to leave at home.
