"High-Fives" for the # 1 Guy in the White House!
What a great run our President had at the Fitness Run the other day. George "W" completed the 3 mile course with an impressive 20:29 (race clock caught him at 20:27) HIs splits were 6 : 3 0, 6 : 4 9 & 7 : 0 **----pretty good, wouldn't you agree? And, remember he's 5 5. lol
Laura Bush also gets a "high-five" for completing the walkers course.
Hats off to both Mr & Mrs!
1 st place finished with a time of 1 7. 1 2 (I think)

That is so cool.
<lisac>
06-24-2002, 05:03 AM
wow, that's unbelievable. I didn't know he was in such great shape!
<Mel>
06-24-2002, 06:10 AM
It's even more amazing that his bodyguards finished at exactly the same time!!!! What are the chances of something like THAT happening?! Weird!!!!!! LOL
<Monica>
06-24-2002, 06:15 AM
That is very imressive. I do like George W, can't stand his brother but that is another topic, another board. I bet G.W makes sure his bodyguards are able to do as well if not better than him physically.
<Mel>
06-24-2002, 06:35 AM
Well.... I'm sure his bodyguards can out perform him in any & all physical activity. I sure hope they can for his sake.
Now if the guy could just learn to EAT PRETZELS, I say we enter him in the next Olympics. What an athlete.
<Mia>
06-24-2002, 06:51 AM
I imagine the Pres's timing is good, otherwise, Vlanj (being a runner herself) wouldn't have posted it. I know nothing about running except for what the commentators tell us during the Olympics.
Mel, I would expect the Secret Service to keep up with and/or be faster than the Pres. These guys are there to protect him. They have to be in great shape. I would assume that if the Pres likes to "run", they would assign "runners" to the post. No Milky Way, Muskateer, Snickers eating SS there!
Monica, I imagine the Bush brother you are referring to is my former Gov. Jeb? I always thought he had charisma and potential. Wrong!
<Mel>
06-24-2002, 06:57 AM
Mia - I'm not saying that the pres might not be in good shape for his age, I guess I'm one of these shallow people that doesn't give a damn how he can RUN & is more interested in how the president RUNS THE COUNTRY.
<VLANJ>
06-24-2002, 06:58 AM
MIA, you're right....Beorge "W's" times are excellent. He won't win a gold medal at the Olympics, but his splits were great. I still would love to run with him in the AM---I think I'd be the one excited about it though. lol
As for the pretzel thing.....lol. Hey, at least it was somewhat healthy, not potato chips and dip. lol
Have a good day.
<vlanj>
06-24-2002, 07:04 AM
lol
Don't know about "Beorge's" times, but George "W's" are excellent. lol

Mia your in Fl? I know Jeb is still our Governor for a few more months, not sure who is worse Janet or him? I better not get started...did you love what Jeb said last week! He said in a news conference that it's time for a woman governor..hello??? He is running against a woman candidate.
Ps. I am a Republican but I might be changing to an independent.

Hi Monica -
Mia used to live in FL, but now lives in NY. (I answered for you Mia, because I wanted to talk to Monica)...LOL! Hope you don't mind!
Have you gotten the test results for Saba back yet?
How is she doing?
Let us know...

Hi Jinh, I should have started another thread but I am at work so we got be quick and quiet LOL.
Thanks for asking about Saba, I should have posted this last week but last week was hard on me. She had more tests last Wen and she has liver disease, exactly what is wrong with her liver we do not know. She acts fine but the vet was saying that if I wait till she doesnt act fine then it will be too late. On Saturday she spent the day at the vet getting more tests to see if and how well her liver is functioning. If that is the problem then there is not much that they can do. If that is not the problem then she will have an ultrasound. She is on an anti oxident cancer medicine now. I should have expected this at her age. I still think everything will be fine but my friends and family say that I am in denial. She is acting very affectionate and pretty much the same as always but her liver enzymes are very high. In dogs they are supposed to be between 12 and 118 but with Saba they are in the high 500 range. Just keep her in your prayers.
Mia- I bet your glad you moved, if he gets re-elected I will have to! Not to offend any of Jeb's fans but.....I do love his brother!

Monica -
I will keep you and Saba in my prayers.
:)
(Now, get back to work)!

Any suggestions on how she can take her medicine? LOL I have tried putting them in her mouth but she has her teeth shut so hard you would think there was a clamp on her mouth LOL. She has to take 2 pills, on an empty stomach. Last night I hid them in some meat, she ate all the meat and spit out the pills. LOL smart dog, I got her to take them but goodness it was an ordeal! Cat wait for tonight

Monica -
I've had pretty good luck with globbing them up with peanut butter. Ummm...it's been a while, trying to think...
I remember sometimes just having to be really firm about getting their mouths open, and getting the pill/pills as far back as you can, then hold her mouth closed for 30 seconds or so.
You might want to try a combination of the above, i.e.,hide the pills in something not too chewy like canned dog food or like I said some peanut butter, and then hold her mouth closed for a bit.
I know what you're saying...it's always a struggle!
Good Luck!!

Monica - I'm sorry to hear your dog is sick. The easiest way I know to give a dog pills is to use deli sliced meat (thin)..... but BEFORE you give her a piece with the pill ~rolled~ up inside, give her a couple of tastes WITHOUT any bitter tasting pills snuck in. Then she'll be begging for MORE & will be more likely to gobble the next piece down without even chewing.
If deli slices don't entice her, you could ask the vet if it is alright to try cottage cheese (lo fat) or something of that consistency.
If she's a fussy eater & you STILL have a problem, you'll have to place the pill in her mouth as far back as possible (AWAY from the teeth) & hold her mouth shut while in an upward position. With your other hand, soothingly stroke the underside of her neck UNTIL SHE SWALLOWS. Don't forget to check her nouth afterwards..... if it is too dry, the pill will still be a gooey mess inside & she'll run off & spit it out in secret.
Poor doggy! I hope those pills get her feeling better ASAP.
<Monica>
06-24-2002, 10:10 AM
Thanks guys! The peanut butter used to work but not anymore ( she has been on/off sick with other things so she has had plenty of pills so now she is learning all the secrets) I will try the deli meat tonight, love your suggestions! Your right I do need to check the mouth afterwards.
<Jinh>
06-24-2002, 10:11 AM
Mel-
Yes, forgot about the stroking the neck part - that's important. It's been so long since I've had to do that. Also, makes a big difference if the pills are tablets or capsules (capsules are much easier).
<Mel>
06-24-2002, 10:22 AM
LOL Jinh..... the stroking of the neck is REAL IMPORTANT. Those dogs are smart as hell. Of course, they'll go outside & literally eat crap but when it comes to things they don't like.... oh brother! Haha
Monica - Before you use ANYTHING, ask your vet if that food is OK. My dog Oliver had liver or pancreas problems and foods with a fatty content just added to his pain. He was one that you HAD to use the shove it down his throat & pray method. My Golden Retriever would have rolled the pills into her own deli meat if it came to that. Haha
<Jinh>
06-24-2002, 10:52 AM
Oh, boy...what a hassle!
It seems that canned dog food (a gross as it is) would be ok to hide the pill in. If I remember right, Friskies was/is really sticky like peanut butter (yuk)
Oh, hey, does anyone here get "Dog Fancy" magazine? They feature a different dog breed every month, with a big center fold...Vlanj, they did Greyhounds not too long ago, Great Danes about six months ago, PK. If you're interested in getting the back-issues, I can give you the info...
Anyway, if you're a dog lover, you will LOVE this - really a great publication!!!
Boy, poor 'W' sure went to the dogs fast!
LOL! (sorry Vlanj - couldn't resist)

I get "Dog Fancy"...good magazine. They featured my breed back in February of this year, German Short Hair Pointers.
So sorry to hear about your dog Monica. One of my pointers has epilepsy and has to take Phenobarbital to control his seizures. I usually stick the pill in different foods (leftovers)that I can find in the fridge. That way he is always getting something different and makes it more exciting since he has to take them for the rest of his life. But then, he gulps everything down without chewing no matter what I give him....sometimes I wonder if he even tastes what I give him.
Vlanj.......it's good to know that we have a fit president. I had no idea he was in such shape.....and good for Laura too!

Dog Fancy is my favorite mag.It is just great.I had a dalmatian that was taking pills for her arthritis and no matter what I put it in she would eat the food and spit that pill back out.It would take four or five times before she would get it down.She loved to eat,maybe she was doing it just to get something extra.One time in the winter I put out some peanutbutter balls coated with birdseed for the birds and they fell on the ground and she ate every bite of those balls.I love all animals and it is so hard when one is sick or dies.

Hi Monica, sorry to hear about Saba. If she's an older dog, it might be something that you have to face and just enjoy the time you have now. I remember when my Dane had cancer, hubby and I cried like babies. You'll know when the time is right, a loving owner always does and you know what? -- You'll have the strength to make the right decisions.
As far as the pills go, the best and only way I've found is to stick a finger through the opening of the back teeth (when they pull the clenched mouth trick because they know what's coming) so the gag reflex makes them open their mouth. With a firm hand on the upper snout, pull her head up, stick the pills as far down the throat with your other hand, (this is not the time to be apprehensive, do it firmly and quickly but yet gently) then close the mouth, grabbing it shut with one hand, keeping head tilted up and then stroking the throat with your free hand. Works every time! Good luck!
<Monica>

Thank you Gailsie, yes she is older, I adopted her years ago from the Humane Society but I think she is around 10 or 11? I have had her for about 9 years. I just called the vet and he really doesnt want her to have the pills with any food, so I am gonna need to do what you and Mel suggested, tonight should be fun. LOL. Saba can get very stubborn, maybe its the doberman trait? As a child we had Danes, my oldest sister raises them. I would love to have another one one day. It seems as the bigger the dog the more gentle they are JMO
<gailsie>

Monica, I really feel for you and I know you'll be able to get the pills down, because it's what needs to be done. Just make sure you are firm when opening and closing the mouth. Don't let her shake her head off at you, lol. And of course, always speaking in a calm but firm voice. You'll do it.
As far as the Danes go, my girl was my first and probably last one. Loved her so much, she was a great dog. Very protective! Saved me once from an intruder in my home when hubby was away. This "repairman" looking for directions had entered my home while I was upstairs (lived in an old Victorian out in the sticks) and was met at the kitchen by "Dagmar." She got an extra treat that night.
Really always had hunting dogs when we were kids, German Short-haired's and now that we have kids, have two yellow labs that absolutely love the fact that "they" live at the beach!
Hope your vet can find just the right thing for Saba, keep us up-dated.

Mel....please go back and read my previous post. When I addressed you, I was referring to the Secret Service being in good shape. Personally, as long as the President performs well for the good of the Country, I couldn't care less whether he was in good shape or not.
Jinh....I don't mind that you responded on my behalf. Through this board and my big mouth, probably the whole world knows where I've lived and now live.
Monica....So sorry about Saba. What I've done with my daughter's dogs is to mash the pills and mix in a tiny, tiny amount of mashed dog biscuits with it. Then I put it on the palm of my hand and let the dogs lick away. It works all the time.
Regarding Janet, she did very well when she was appointed State Attorney for Miami-Dade County (formerly Dade County) which is where I used to live. In fact, she was very well respected and did a lot of good for the County. She was also elected to the Office of State Attorney and was reelected several times.
If the FL Democrates come out in full force and pay Jeb back for Katherine Harris and the "chads"....he better start packing! Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if that happens because I always thought the "unhappy" would make him pay for what happened during the Presidential elections.
<Christine>

Monica, I hope Saba is okay.
I've always used Mel's method; learned it from my mom and I've never had a problem getting a dog to take a pill (not the lunch meat one, but putting it way down and then holding their mouth shut and stroking their throat until they swallow. That works for me with dogs AND cats.
<Monica>
06-24-2002, 07:46 PM
I appreciate everyone's help with her medicine, I will be trying them all in a little while, she has to take them before bed.
Mia I do not live in Dade so I was not sure how she did there, I am glad you liked her so that makes a difference for me.
I am not sure what I feel about her and Wako TX but anyone is better than Jeb. I do like his brother and I am worried that Jeb will win due to his brother.
I also do not know many Republicans that like Jeb, me included LOL
<Jinh>
06-24-2002, 07:55 PM
Mia -
The reason I responded on your behalf was because Monica seemed to be confused when you referred to Jeb as your 'former Gov.' She didn't seem to know that you had moved apparently....becaus e she was telling you that he was still the Gov. of FL.
It must be the moon or something...because nobody seems to be reading things right...
<Monica>
06-24-2002, 07:58 PM
Its my fault, I forgot she had moved and I thought she was making a humorous joke on his eventual leaving and his not really doing anything good for us Floridians right now LOL I think alot of Floridians are already referring to him as the former LOL
<vlanj>
06-24-2002, 08:05 PM
LLuccy....We grew up with GSP's---love them. I remember when we were very yound, the Mom died after having a litter of 1 4 and we had to hand feed all the pups. Oh, the puppy breath! lol Yes, they are beautiful dogs.
Monica, sorry to hear about Saba. Don't weaken when administering the pills--it's for her own good. I agree with gailsie---You can do it!
<Mia>
06-24-2002, 08:51 PM
Jinh,
No need to apologize.
Since you (Jinh) had said....>>Mia used to live in FL, but now lives in NY. (I answered for you Mia, because I wanted to talk to Monica)...LOL! Hope you don't mind!<< I meant that it was OK to respond to Monica & that I didn't mind. That you weren't saying anything the whole world didn't know already. Do you mean the Eclipse or is there a Full Moon?
Monica,
Democrates outnumber Republicans in FL. If they go out and vote...you may get your wish. Keep in mind....Janet was good in Dade County....has Waco & other things nationally. Maybe, if it had been another candidate against Jeb? I don't vote party lines.....it's who I think will do the better job.
<Monica>
06-24-2002, 09:02 PM
I also do not normally vote party lines but anyone has got to be better than Jeb
In case your wondering part of my reason for my dislike of him is that he cut out my grants for school, per him it is up to my parents to pay for it, well I am an older student so are my folks still responsible? LOL
<LLuccy>
06-25-2002, 03:22 AM
Vlanj, Yes, they are beautiful dogs. I get many compliments on my two. Makes me protect them more..lol According to Dog Fancy Magazine, they refer to them as, "One dog fits all".....they say that the GSP tracks, points and retrieves and makes a great family pet. I will also add, they make great watch dogs. They are very protective of their home. A plummer I had once come to the house would know that....lol...now that's another story!
Just to let all know.....no, I don't hunt...lol Just love the breed. Ok, I really love all dogs, cats, horses, llamas...any and all animals...just an animal lover who has turned into a vegetarian, going on a year now. Have not had meat in a year and don't miss it. Heck, I even buy "Cage Free" eggs. I could go on regarding this topic, so I'll stop....lol

I am real glad George W is able to run races. I wish he could spend as much time caring about the economy.
