Soap Dish: Schedule gives Ripa room

There has been much speculation about what Kelly Ripa will do when
her contract with "All My Children" expires in December.
On July 5, the Daily News first reported: "Given a choice, Ripa would
like to come and go on the soap as her schedule permits."
Well, that's exactly what will happen, as Ripa herself confirms.
"'All My Children' viewers won't notice anything different about my
schedule," she says. "It's not like suddenly I'll vanish. I just like
having the option of saying, 'Thursday doesn't work for me. How about
Friday?' "
Truth be told, Ripa's duties with "Live With Regis & Kelly" have
sometimes conflicted with her soap schedule.
"The other day," she says, "I was pretaping for 'Regis' and I had to
be [at 'AMC' to tape] a wedding at 11 a.m. I'm not asking for a lot,
but once in a while I'd like to go to the bathroom in between shows.
There are certain days I'll be standing around going, 'It's 5
o'clock, I haven't gone to the bathroom yet.' 'Okay, she's got both
shows today, give her the Depends and send her on her way.'"
The actress is amazed at all the attention being paid to her life and
to her schedule at "AMC," where she has worked nonstop for 12 years.
"The National Enquirer said our marriage is falling apart," she
says. "I called Mark [Consuelos] and told him, and he said, 'Again?'
You read these things and go, 'What?' One of them said, 'Kelly never
leaves the house.' No news there."
But Ripa will leave the house today to head for Australia with her
kids — Michael, 5, and Lola, 1 — and her in-laws to visit hubby
Consuelos (ex-Mateo, "AMC"), who is Down Under filming the movie "The
Great Raid" for Miramax with Benjamin Bratt.
"On his first day of filming, they told him they were a month behind
schedule," says Ripa. "I said, 'How is it possible that on Day One of
filming you fall a month behind schedule?' I had 'Apocalypse Now' on
my mind and I'm like, 'Oh my God, my husband's going to be in the
bush for three years.' But they haven't had to use any of the days
put aside in case of [bad] weather, so they're back on track again."
Consuelos family plans call for a side trip to Tahiti, and a visit to
Steve Irwin's Crocodile Hunter Zoo.
I made sure I got him on the show before we went to Australia so we
could bond," Ripa says. "I said, 'Give me your home phone number so I
can get whatever credential I need to go to your zoo,' because who
talks about him more than me?"
Ripa hopes that by the time she returns to New York in September, the
attention to her schedule will have died down.
"This is a nonstory," she says. "I guess it seems interesting, but as
is usually the case with me, it looks more fascinating on the
exterior, until you penetrate the shallow truth of it all."
