View Full Version : Parade article about Kelly

All in all, a very complimentary article about Kelly--and some great pictures--but did it ever explain "where she finds her strength"? All it says is that she "credits her parents and husband for helping her handle the demands of two high-profile jobs and raising a family." How?! At the end it says that, in the beginning when she thought she might "ruin" the show that "Mark told me every day that I was doing a great job...." well, of course he did, what husband wouldn't?

There are several quotes that are either hard to believe, or a put down of herself. "I cried at night for weeks, thinking, what if I ruin a show that's been on the air for so many years?" --she chose to become an actress because "the way I saw it, there was nothing else I was very good at"--after 9/11, she said to Mark, "We've saved enough money. Let's go someplace safe and get regular jobs"--and the last one--"...there are still some days when I think I'm never going to give the show the justice it deserves."

Thanks for the recap Lisac. I watched host chat on Friday and got a kick out of it when Walt Willey questioned her "self doubt and insecurity"; he even slipped purposefully that he felt she was insincere. It seemed to me that this old friend of hers knows a different Kelly than that which she portrays on Live. He seemed to know a Kelly who is very secure and sure of herself not the self-deprecating, dependent, grateful girl she pretends to be. I for one would appreciate more honesty from Kelly. There is nothing wrong with being a strong, self assured and focused woman. Why she has to pretend to be unattractive, grateful and dependent is absolute silliness.

I agree with you about Walt Willey--I thought the exact same thing! I, for one, would enjoy Kelly a lot more and respect her more if she acted more self-assured and strong. JMO

lisac, thanks for the reminder about the magazine article, I'll read it later. Agree with you and Attorney about Walt Willey. First of all, I always enjoy him, he's very well-spoken. It was funny when he kind of looked at Kelly and the article as if to say "are you kidding?!" I'm sure he and the other cast members know a very different Kelly than the one she portrays as co-host. I do think Kelly came into Live with this dumbo act that way if she did take the show down, how could anyone blame this poor little half-wit.

Did enjoy their "chat" about vacations and kids and such. Wonder why she doesn't do that with the regular host???

Hi girls. Welcome back to you too Gailsie. Hope you had a good vacation.

I missed Walt. Darn!!! I was looking forward to seeing them together. Was it a good hostchat? I had an early morning playdate for my son, and forgot to tape it. Shoot, shoot, shoot. I will have to check on another site, where Sultry does a great synopsis of the show. Keeping my fingers crossed that she saw it!!!

Friday's show with Walt was great! I thought that he and Kelly worked well together. She seemed very relaxed.

As for this week's shows, I am looking forward to seeing Joy co-host, but could do without Bernadette Peters. I wonder if she will say anything about Regis' comments about her husband's John Deere hat?

Walt and Kelly were so good that Regis should think about retiring. She is so much more funny when he isn't around. He's so snide with her and even though he says he's kidding, he's often really mean.

I'd watch a show with Walt and Kelly even more than the one with Regis.

Hey Regis, it's time for you to retire. You're old and you're mean.

Kelly and Walt were not that great for host chat. It was blah to me. This week should be great without her there.
As far as any articles about Kelly. I get tired of those magazines featuring her when all they do is REPEAT the same crap about her for the past year. Nothing new has been added in any of the articles except maybe the bookclub...Enough already telling the world she juggles two jobs and she met her husband on the soaps and she is bringing in ratings and she has two kids... WHOPEE...NOTHING new!! Geez, I wish they would keep her out of it all.

Aaahhh! The green-eyed monster is raising it's ugly head once again. Right now she's a hot commodity so deal with it. If you don't read about her, you won't have anything to complain about. Simple as that.

rukidding, you are right, it is always the same few things that are written about Kelly,(well, except for the National Enquirer lol)--it's the "Live" publicity machine at work. Kelly doesn't even have the savvy to mention her "charity" work, endorsements, etc.--all she does is give a few "put myself down" quotes and that's it. Somebody should be advising her a little bit better.

To Lisac: You say "Somebody should be advising her a little bit better." Like who? YOU? Since you seem to know exactly what she should be saying in these interviews, maybe she should fire her agent and hire you! LOL!

Gee Linda,
If its not bad enough already here on this board that people cant write their own opinions but to have you wake up early this morning to already lash out at Lisac when she was just stating hers. gee, cant anyone just say anything without out Kelly's "holy than thou's" followers rebuttle some snide remark (including ET)
Here it comes.....

<Linda>
08-12-2002, 08:08 AM
Whap, first of all, it doesn't seem like it was lisac's opinion, she is always "agreeing" with others, or saying "you are right", or "I was thinking the exact thing"...etc. It doesn't seem like she really has an opinion or thought of her own., she seems to be a follower. (My opinion). And I wasn't lashing out at her, I was asking her WHO she thinks should advise Kelly in these interviews? Since, she seems to know so much about what Kelly should be saying, I suggested she (lisac) should be the one to do so. You say everyone should be able to write their opinions on here, well thats my opinion...why should I be yelled at (by you) for voicing my opinion? It sounds a little hypocritical of you to post what you did to me.

<whap>

Linda,
Honestly, I am not trying to be mean in anyway I really am not, But whenever someone addresses another in their opinion its judging. Now maybe you guys have this banter thing going on that I dont know about but from just reading, its not allowing the other to state their own opinions without the defense of Kelly's followers. Usually someone will just post what they say and then it goes on, but usually what I see is someone cutting down the others opinion.

That's all.

Getting away from the whole argument for a second, I think Lisa does have a point, in that Kelly could promote herself in a more positive manner.

After a while you want something you can sink your teeth into...to show that she is wellrounded or multifaceted. She has mentioned her work for MADD briefly, but not much. She may feel that she doesn't want to get the backlash that Kathie Lee got for talking about her charity involvement. I feel it can be done in moderation, and would give an appearance of substance to Kelly, which would silence some of her detractors. I don't think Kelly is all fluff, and I don't think it is wise to portray herself as such.

As usual, of course, Lisac just posted the quotes she wanted to, out of context of course, to try & prove some kind of point. If anyone would read the whole article, you will see it tells a different story. Kelly talks about the work ethic of her family, how her father worked sometimes from 3 in the morning until 10 at night, for example. Lisac, if you aren't going to post the whole article, don't just pick & choose quotes and take them out of context.

<Yawn> C'mon... did you guys think that Lisa C would have anything positive to say about Kelly? I think that her rare C&P of (perceived by her, and taken wholly out of context) "negative" articles about Kelly are so few and far between.... I actually look forward to them, just for the comic relief!

Get soooo bored with all of her usual posts to the Negs. "My thoughts, exactly" "lol that is what I think" Puhleese!

I enjoyed the Parade article about Kelly, and the pix were cute..... but I do agree that it could have gone into more depth... but I doubt that the depth of the article was any decision made by Kelly. Besides, Parade articles are notoriously brief & shallow.

KEEPING UP WITH KELLY
By Sandy Kenyon

As co-host of a successful morning talk show,
the veteran soap opera star Kelly Ripa has
emerged as the princess of daytime TV.
With two jobs and two kids, how does she
handle it all?

Kelly Ripa is boosting ratings as Regis Philbin's
co-host on "Live With Regis and Kelly".
Later in the day she plays the onscreen wife of
her real-life husband, Mark Consuelos, on the
soap opera "All My Children". (Kelly in pics
with Regis and with Mark on "AMC") (A large picture
of a smiling Kelly on the left of this paragraph.)

Kelly and her children, Michael and Lola,
visit the set of the Disney Channel's "Bear in the
Big Blue House". (Picture of a smiling Kelly, with
Michael and Lola in front and the head of a large
Disney dog next to Kelly)

"I kept dreaming that a giant tidal wave was about
to engulf me, because I felt I was in over my head,"
says Kelly Ripa, 31, of her February 2001
debut as Regis Philbin's co-host of
"Live With Regis and Kelly".
"I cried at night for weeks, thinking,
'What if I ruin a show that's been on
the air for so many years?'"
Few fears could have been more unfounded.
Ever since Ripa, a veteran soap opera star, took
over the position vacated by Kathie Lee Gifford,
the number of women viewers aged 18 to 34 has
increased by 31%. IN April, she launched
"Reading With Ripa", a book-club segment
that catapulted her first selection to the top
spot on Amazon.com's best-seller list.
And this year, Ripa's dual career earned her
not one, but two Daytime Emmy nominations:
for Outstanding supporting Actress in a Drama
Series ("All My Children") and, with Regis Philbin,
for Outstanding Host of a Talk Show.
Ripa credits her parents and husband for helping
her handle the demands of two high-profile
jobs and raising a family.
"I grew up in a family with a srong work
ethic," says Ripa, who was raised in
Berlin, New Jersey.
"My father, a bus driver, never turned down
overtime, because he wanted us to have
great things in life. I remember him
getting up at 3:30 a.m. and working till
10 p.m., whether he was sick or it was
30 degrees below. That was such an example
to me."
As a child, Ripa often sang show tunes to
her family. In high school, she won the lead
in the senior play and decided to become
an actress-a career path her parents did
not initially embrace.
"The way I saw it, there was nothing
else that I was very good at," she explains.
Ripa landed roles in several TV commercials
and in 1990, when she was only 19, moved
to New York City. An audition for ABC's
"All My Children" netted her the featured
role of Hayley Vaughan.
"I had no life experience and no work
experience, and I get this job on a
national TV show!" Ripa says.
"I was at the studio 14 to 16
hours every day. As a young girl alone in
the city, I had no time to get into any
trouble."
(These days, after her morning stint with
Regis, Ripa heads directly to another studio
several times a week to tape "All My
Children" until early evening.)
Five years into her soap opera, Ripa
began dating Mark Consuelos, who had been
hired to play Mateo Santos, her
character's love interest. A year later,
in 1996, they eloped to Las SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM.
(Their onscreen characters got married
in 1997.) Today, they have two children-
Michael, 5, and Lola, 1**months.
When the World Trade Center was attacked
last September, Ripa's initial reaction
was to protect her family by leaving
New York City and the spotlight.
Ripa says, "I told my husband, 'We've
saved enough money. Let's go someplace
safe and get regular jobs.'" But Consuelos
saw things differently. "My husband said,
'Not only are we staying put, we are
going to build a life here.'
"Our relationship is all about building
each other up," adds Ripa. "In the days when
I was really nervous about "Live", Mark
told me every day that I was doing a
great job, that I had no reason to be upset.
Well, there still are days when I think I'm
just never going to give the show the justice
it deserves. But you get out there.
You do your job. And you always do the best
you can."

I just read the article forgot it was in Sunday's paper and thought it was a good one, short just enough of info on Kelly. I know on this board we all have our opinions. But WOW the negative towards Kelly is really bad. Oh so big deal she said she cried herself to sleep thinking she would ruin the show. Yeah I would too. What critics. Don't watch the show. The words that stood out at me were work ethic, and dedication. Her Dad was the provider of the family and worked very hard. Let me tell you something. I relate to Kelly Ripa and I'm proud of her success. Kelly Italian/Irish Libra, street smart and respects where she came from. Roe Italian, Libra, street smart, Dad provider and dedicated to his sick wife. I just had to vent. And Regis Italian/Irish dedicated, hard working.
