Anyone related to that Powerball lottery winner in WV? What, $110 million? He's giving the first 10% to church, then a portion to his wife and daughter to spend!! Yikes!!

I just hope he does well with it. I heard on the radio today that a pretty high percentage (I don't remember the number exactly) of people who win the lottery are worse off 2 years after they won it than they were 2 years before they won it!! Pretty scary, huh??

10% to the church! Will the church be worse off?

MG ~

Was he truly already a millionaire? As I heard him speak, he seemed like he would do alright with it. He seemed to have his priorities in order!

I heard someone say that tithing, although something we should all do, when it amounts to millions of dollars, can also be hurtful to the one tithing, i.e. if they want new carpet in the church and Jane says blue, Joe says green, and the tither says red, people will just say he is throwing his money around!! I don't know if that's true, but I can see where it would be. People tend to resent others with money. I guess that's why I have so many friends!!

Goodmorning Skeeter,Yes,it is true.He just gave an interview about ½ hr ago and
they asked him point blank"weren't you already a millionare before this".He said Yes.He was on after the baby cloning announcement. If he is truly as he represents himself on tv,he makes one heck of an impression.
He had his wife and grand daughter there(his daughter couldn't be there as she has just gone into remission from cancer for the 2nd time)and when the interviewer asked what she was going to to with the money she said"meet nellie"LOL
The winner and his wife were much more selfless in what they were going to do with the money. But of course something along those lines would probably be how any teenager answered.LOL

Also,I know that $111,000,000 is a lot of money but it is sickening that
it was worth so much and he gets a third.I know he choose the cash option but to have to pay 40% of his half (right around 60 million)is sickening. One other thing,he is giving his tithe/tenth on the gross,he said.

Just goes to show...the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and them that gots keeps gettin'. I would rather have seen 10 average families split it than some multi-millionaire who absolutely doesn't need it. I'm sure that any church going person would be making a donation to their church so I'm not very impressed with that. And just how many average families have need of a helicopter? Not on my list of wants for sure. Oh, well, to all us poor slobs who spent a few bucks on the lottery.....better luck next time. I only play when it's a huge lottery otherwise it's a waste of money.

I play here at work with 12 other people. We have never won anything substantial, and all the little amounts we win we put right back in. I would never quit playing though, cause the first time I did, they probably would win. And I would be stuck at work as they walked waving out the door. LOL

Did he pick the numbers or was it a quick-pick? I know he played $100.00 worth - so, he certainly didn't hand pick them all...just wondering.

We've been playing the same numbers for years (birthdays, anniversary)...we won $200. not too long ago. Once you hand-pick you know if you would have won (unlike a quick-pick)...so, ever since the time I forgot to get tickets and 4 out of 5 numbers came up (for $200.00) we play every week!

BTW, we have 5 different games here, but Powerball is always the biggest.

I think that he did say the machine picked the winning #'s for him.
We have 2 other games here ,not counting the daily and pick 4,but the powerball is
by far the biggest .Doesn't it start at 10 mil each night?Powerball just made it'[s way here to PA this year and I have not missed playing the twice a week it goes off yet.I always play the powerplay on it so I would say overall I have broke even...well maybe less than even.LOL.

As far as the helicopter,I see it like this, when you win a lottery for 300 million plus, you are now in tom cruise, john travolta status and they have a few each so what is ONE little helicopter!hahaha!
Maybe because he only took half that is why he is ONLY going for the helicopter.LOLOL!Kidding

I agree with MG. It is absurd that out of 315M he ends up with 111M. More and more states are stretching out the payment plan to 26 and 30 years now. Pretty soon, at this rate, they will give you the option 50 years or cash option. I think they do this on purpose knowing most would opt for cash value and they bank the rest themselves. I mean, he could of just taken the 30 years (assuming he thinks he will live to 85) and get 10.5M per yr before taxes.

MG - I'm pretty sure the Powerball J.P. goes back to twenty million - could be wrong though...
...as far as what to do with it...well, WOW! That is sooooooooo much money!!!
I would give tons away - I'm a big enviromentalist - so lots of money to Sierra, World Wildlife, etc. Habitat for Humanity is a good one too...oh dear! My head would be swimming with all the various causes out there!

Personally, no helicopter here...better vehicles and finishing our house for sure...money for my nephews (except their parents are very well off).

Geez, kindof makes ya crazy just thinking about it!

Jinh <wondering just how much a helicopter costs>

Yeah Ghost, I wonder too - that seems to be an excessive amount to pay in taxes.

When my dad/I won $10,000 on a scratch ticket here we got a check for $8,000 and then had to take care of state taxes on our own (about $600.00).

So, to only end up with a third seems strange...

One of the teamleaders where I used to work won $100,000. on the Powerball a few yrs. ago. After the taxes, they ended up with $66,000. They weren't rich, but I guess they were able to pay off their house, and put the rest I think into the husband's own business.

Apparently, the more you win, the more percentage they take out for taxes.
Still, I'd be thrilled just to win a $100 on something, lol.

What the IRS takes out depends on your tax bracket. Naturally, 110 mil puts you in the highest! :(

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I, too, loved the Christmas eve show. I caught it before we left. The kids are adorable!!! Mark ain't so bad himself!!!! ;)

Enjoy the weekend!

Well, I guess they assume (and rightly so, in my case) that if you're winning that much, you really wouldn't care!! I would be so happy to win anything over $100 I would be singing til June!! I've never been that lucky. I heard him say that he always "rolled over" whatever he won into his next play, and he only plays when the lottery is over $100 million (I guess noone wants to win just a "little" money!!!

So, my question to you is: what would you do with the money if you won the lottery? Me? I would build a new house, buy new vehicles for my husband and I buy, blow a little money on a vacation, and invest the rest so I could live on the interest the rest of my life!! Oh, I forgot, I would hire a maid...that would be a pretty high priority!!!

Hope everyone is having a great day!!

I just read Skeeter's comment on the church. I said the same thing. If he gives even a million dollars to the three pastors like he said he would, I bet all three churches will be destroyed in a year. You can't give that much money to a church committee and not have people fighting over how to spend it.
