Sorry all you Kelly Ripa fans, but she ain't doing much for the ratings.
As quoted on Yahoo:
"Maury remains the only established chatfest on the rise (better get those shin guards on, Paramount).
-Regis & Kelly, Jerry, Jenny and Ricki remain hindered by double-digit year-to-year erosion." See the full story below on:

This is a prime example of what gets fights started here...
...You're obviously a Kelly basher, and are taking great delight in this, but you make no reference to Regis or Gelman, who are slipping right along with it all.
Why is it always Kelly's fault???

Somehow, some way, we need to just ignore the pissy posters.

....and thus, I'm sure it will begin again. Who really cares??? lol And...have you seen Dr. Phil? Yawn. And Oprah is the same thing over and over again. I did like her Mariah Carey interview and I like the shows where she does nice things for people...wish they would minus her big pats on the back though. It really isn't all Kelly's fault. It's Gelman's fault. Look at his target audience...they are a fickle bunch and don't stay loyal very long. The only fault of Kelly's is that she appeals to that target audience and I think they've moved on. Gelman should have been more loyal to his core audience who have always been there. But enough of the deep thoughts....don't want to strain anything;) Happy New Year everyone!!!

The ratings are what they are, most of the time they show if a program is successful, alot I don't understand, example, the "View" their ratings have been 1.something for quite a few months and they are still on the air, it could be that Barbara Walters has alot of power, but it still has to be costing the network big bucks to keep it going. As for Kelly being the reason for low ratings, no one knows that, when she is on leave later in February, if the numbers go up then everyone can say it is her fault, until then "NOT"

Another factor for any show's low ratings right now is this is basically vacation time for many people. Holidays mean time away from the house and the tv. Time is spent visiting relatives and bargain shopping. Practically all shows are reruns. For the ordinary working person, vacation days off are not going to be spent watching reruns of anything unless you are so enamored of the show you absolutely need to see it again. I don't work and my tv is not on unless for a soap or news during this time. When regular programming resumes next week, ratings will change.

The ratings have never been in the 4 's since the first few weeks Kelly came on board. (not to be seen again)
Like I've said, and others too, Regis had these same numbers, in the middle 3 ' s) when he was working with revolving cohosts. Actually, maybe they were, at times, even higher---but don't hold me to that. lol
As for the ratings being low during this time of year.....what's the excuse for the other 11 and a half months out of the year? Some viewers just have to bite the bullet and accept that that's about as high as they are going to go.....Geeze, even Gelman's stunts during sweeps doesn't help bring their ratings up. lol (I doubt very much that anyone at Live! is worried about being cancelled)
Linder, you are so right about The View---I don't think they've gotten out of the 1 whole yet......but yet they are still on the air. Unbelievable. lol

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the ratings, however it does strike me as being odd that in every article I read about Regis and/or Kelly and the show in general, it says that the ratings have increased since Kelly came on board.Surely this can not be fabricated every time since the articles I am referring to are in People magazine and the likes and not in the "Rags".

The blame does not lie with Kelly. The whole talk show genre is suffering. She may have been someone super special who came along and revolutionized talk shows with her insightful comments, good works, hilarious stories and/or new and different ideas, but instead she was a nice girl with a sunny disposition and a fun laugh and happy outlook. Some watch her, most don't, as with any TV show. Her target audience (young females) may be fickle and may move on quicker than Kathie Lee's target audience of older females. But the fact that young females spend more than older ones may make Kelly more appealing to the advertisers, fickle or not. Not sure about that.
Since Live has had a more than 10% decline in ratings over the last year, and so have the other shows (except for Maury...UGH), as long as talk shows are on, I would think Regis and Kelly have a safe place on the schedule. They aren't doing anything new, just status quo, but it seems to work for them. Comparatively speaking, they seem to be closer to the top of the heap than the bottom in ratings. Now if there is some strange resurgence in game shows (much like reality shows at night) all of a sudden, the talk shows may be in danger.
Think of how many sitcoms and dramas at night have been replaced with reality programming. That's bad news for the actors out there, trying to make a living, the pilot season was already brutal and ultracompetitive, I can't imagine what it's like now. I'm sure it's driven many actors out of the profession. But we have shown that we love our reality programs and only the very best sitcoms and dramas, with the best writing and acting, and that's the way it should be. The people have spoken.

Oh, also wanted to comment to E.T. that the article that was cited in the first post on this thread was from 12/6/02 so it has nothing to do with the holiday season. Ratings are generally delayed a bit so we really don't know yet what the ratings are for this holiday season, but I'm sure any downturn in ratings during the last two weeks of December would be ignored by TPTB. I believe the article on Yahoo was commenting on the general trend for ratings over the last year.

Thank you, RnKns,
You are SO RIGHT. The article at Yahoo is about the downward trend for Regis and Kelly's ratings in the past year.

Just a comment about the View and their 1 rating. A lot has to do with how many TV's are in use at the time of the day the View is on. There aren't as many TV's in use at the time that show is on so they are very happy with their rating. I bet even if Oprah didn't have her cushy time slot her ratings would be a little lower.I remember R&KL mentioning that same subject way back when.

Very insightful, thoughtful post, RnK. Perfectly said.
I've noticed there have been very few "ratings are higher" stories about Kelly/ Live lately--and most journalists don't even check their facts--they just want to "stick it" to Kathie Lee because most of them don't like her.
"Gelman should have been more loyal to his core audience...."--great line, "battlebots"--I agree.

Now lisac "knows" (mind reading again) what the journalists are thinking too!

Too, too funny LOL!

...I read a report that the Gen-x'rs (Gelman's target) are maxed out on credit and their bankruptcy filings have risen in that age group. I guess these shows will cycle around to the next target audience. It is all very interesting really to see how it effects programming.

Well, you're forgetting something. LIVE IS BEATING MAURY IN THE RATINGS. It's #3. Last year Regis and Kelly was the only talk show to show gain and Maury was deteriorating double digits. See you can always bounce back.
And perhaps the ratings for the prime targeted group is the same or higher. Then the show doesn't lose any money and can still gain money. Regis bragged on the ratings for the 16th (the day Kelly talked about being Grand Marshalls) were a high 8.3 (or something like that). So we shall see.

People who watch TV certainly have strong opinions. Right away they'll either say they hate or like that person. There is always someone who doesn't support so and so in their work- who feels in some way superior. Regis and Kelly have talent.. besides they must if the wake me up in the morning...
