View Full Version : May Sweeps...

According to Zap2It, The Live! show has a 3.4 for the week of April twenty-ninth - May fifth.
May Sweeps = April 25 - May 22

I know PK posted it on another thread, but I think it's fitting here too since it has to do with ratings/viewers.
"Live with Regis and Kelly" is alone among the top 10 talk shows in not losing viewers this year. Jerry Springer, Rikki Lake, Montel Williams, even daytime queen Oprah Winfrey — four years removed from her planned retirement — have seen ratings drop."
<vlanj>
05-22-2002, 10:38 AM
Steph, I find it interesting that the author didn't say that Live! GAINED any viewers over the past year. Let's remember that Regis held the ratings steady when he was alone or with rotating cohosts. And also remember that is when Regis received his well deserved Emmy.
I do remember the ratings being somewhere in the low fours when Kelly first came aboard, but they've dipped since then. So, maybe those viewers who started out watching Ms. Rippa have left the show and those that enjoy Regis have remained loyal.
Judge Joe Brown has finally tied with Live! lol
<lisac>
05-22-2002, 10:51 AM
Considering how many viewers there are, who say they never watched until Kelly came on board, I would have to conclude that they have lost many viewers as well. I don't really pay too much attention to the ratings, anyway. Live is the only show I watch during the day. Sometimes the View.
<Nicole>
05-22-2002, 10:58 AM
Vlanj, according to the ratings that Trevor posted, LIVE has a 17% INCREASE which means a GAIN. LIVE also has the biggest gain ever in Women 18**9 demographics which is why Kelly is so important to the show.
Regis was by himself for a whole six months. He saw a huge drop in Millionaire's ratings. Where was his loyal fans? LIVE would have dropped like all the rest of them if Kelly hadn't come on board. LIVE With Regis and Kelly is in second place and it's the first time in LIVE's history that it's remained in second place. Rankings is most important because it's all about competition--beating out other shows.
<Nicole>

Sorry about the grammar. Lisa is right about one thing. Why is Vlanj obsessed over the ratings? I'll bet she never paid them any mind until Kelly came on the show.
<lisac>
05-22-2002, 11:12 AM
I never said vlanj was obsessed about ratings. Geez. My point is, if the View is on the air with a 1.7, I don't think we have to worry too much about Live.
<stephanie>
05-22-2002, 02:31 PM
Vlanj- Don't believe I said that it had to do with Kelly coming on the show.
Lisac- I'm sure they've lost viewers that don't like Kelly and gained ones that do like her. That's how the world works. Some people like someone, some don't.

Just noticed Trevor posted the ratings for the Week of May sixth, the second week of sweeps.
First week was a three point four, second week is a three point five.
Maybe REgis has something here. Having Darva & Kelly battle it out in the ring---maybe that'll boost July's ratings.
<gailsie>
05-23-2002, 07:17 PM
Ha Ha, I'd definitely tune in for that. My money would be on Darva, although I have heard those Camden girls can be a rough bunch, lol.
gailsie laughing at how funny that is (inside joke), <evil grin>
<Jinh>
05-23-2002, 07:37 PM
Interesting Gailsie -
Little inside joke is it? Are you one of those long-lost 'Camden' girls that Kelly went to school with? The ones that were so mean everyday and sent Kelly home crying? Hmmmmm......
Well, tell you what, if this silly thing ever happens (which I doubt it will) I'll put fifty bucks on Kelly.
Whad'ya say?
<Lola>
05-23-2002, 07:41 PM
No Jinh, according to Gailsie, Kelly went to a strip mall college...gailsie would never be seen somewhere like that.
I guess she went to Harvard or something like that...
Inside joke <evil grin right back atcha>
ROFL!!
<Jinh>
05-23-2002, 08:15 PM
Lola -
Well, I don't care WHERE Gailsie went to school...she still can't come to our party...NA,NA,NA!
Take that - snooty snot!!!
Lol!
Hey, we could dig a mud pit and wrestle with "the ladies".
Naw - too gross...never mind...

The ratings on all the shows are dropping except Regis and Kelly.
The rating of the show the week Kelly arrived went up to 4.5, the ratings have steadly dropped. They are now around 3.5. (This is one million viewers). The ratings that Trevor(I may not have spelled his name correctly) post for all the shows have The View staying steady 1.7, Rosie stayed at 2.4 and Oprah stays around 6, give or take a tenth of point. The only show losing members is Regis and Kelly. Go figure!
This is the way I see the ratings and this is my opinion. Frankly I predict the ratings will continue to fall.
A little of the "great" showing up in me ;-)
Of course none of this amounts to a "hill of beans" except to Gelman and Regis.
Kelly has her second job.
<Jinh>
05-24-2002, 01:07 PM
What is with you lately, Shel?
I know you've always been a little crotchety...but lately you've been on a war-path!
If you look above, you will see that Rosie was down 20%, Oprah off 2%. The only one to stay the same at a measly 1.7 was The View. I can't explain the story that stated the only talk show not to drop was Live!. I guess it's a big conspiracy, as you seem to think.
Anyway, I really think you need to go find some sea-shells and chill out.
Jinh
<vlanj>
05-24-2002, 02:18 PM
You're right, Shell. Ratings really don't mean a whole lot to some of us--I just think it's interesting to see Live! drop in the ratings---even during Sweeps. That was a surprise. I honestly thought they'd be back in the high three's during Sweeps, but so far the first two weeks weren't anything to write home about. lol
How about Kelly asking Gelman "how'd we do" in the ratings? lol And Gelman answering that they're number one in their time slot---------(in their time slot is the operative phrase)
The Drew Carey and Jennifer Lopez interviews went well----and don't you think because they had PLENTY of time for each one? They didn't (well, Regis interviewed Drew only) have to rush through, talking over each other, trying to get the guest to talk in a four minute segment.
Who knows. Compared to other talk shows, (although Zap2It has Judge Joe Brown even with Live! with a three point four) Live! is doing OK.....but like we've mentioned before, Regis was doing the same or better alone.
<Nicole>
05-24-2002, 10:13 PM
Shell, maybe you should get glasses. Rosie's down 20%. She's lost half of her audience since 1996. Montel's down, Jerry Springer's down. Jenny Jones is down. And don't try and blame everything on Kelly! The ratings for LIVE was a lot lower with your beloved Kathie Lee there. What excuse did you make for her?! It seems according to you, Kathie Lee could do no wrong and Kelly can do no right.
LIVE WITH REGIS AND KATHIE LEE averaged #6 in rankings and a rating of 3.2 during the '9**'99 season. Yes, I can prove it!
<Nicole>
05-24-2002, 10:18 PM
And sixth in the rankings for TALK SHOWS ONLY. At least LIVE WITH REGIS AND KELLY is #2 in the ratings.
<bigklgfan>
05-25-2002, 02:08 PM
to Nicole--Live! with Regis & Kathie Lee was probably most popular in the early 90s when Kathie just had her kids. They would destroy any competition at the 9am hour. Regis now gets excited when they get a "7" share in New York. They used to get 8s and 9s. ( I have the tapes to prove that, too. Regis always used to read the ratings on the air. Kathie would tell him to be a little more humble.) Then it hovered at 7 in the late 90's and basically stayed there. By then the show had its loyal viewers. What show after being on 12 years picks up new viewers? Of course any cohost Regis would have picked would pick up new viewers because fans of that particular person would start watching--hence, new viewers. The show probably lost some old ones (myself) and gained fans of Kelly's. If they are together for as long as Regis & Kathie were I doubt they will be picking up new viewers after 10 years. They probably would lose some, too. Now, after Kelly has been on a while, the ratings seem to hover between 3 and 4 nationally. It probably has reached it's peak.

BigKLGfan,
Good to see you again. Always enjoy your informative posts. I think you may be confusing "ratings" with "share" though...please let me know if that is not the case. Is the 7 or 8 on the same scale as the current 3.5, that's what I'm wondering.
Thanks!
P.S. I miss KLG and her flirting with her "Bobby" and the fun she had with Julian. Even Regis doesn't pick on Mullen anymore.

<<for LIVE was a lot lower with your beloved Kathie Lee there. What excuse did you make for her?! It seems according to you, Kathie Lee could do no wrong and Kelly can do no right.>>
Nicole,
It seems, according to me, that you assume something that is totally wrong.
Now the ratings, May sweeps and the rating are 3.5, I would not consider that good.
I still would like for someone to explain to me just how it is that a show that drops from 4.5 to 3.5 in ONE YEAR is holding it's own. You say Rosie lost "half her viewers in 3 or 4 years, well it was her "big mouth" that caused me to stop watching. "Big Mouths get you in trouble in this world."
This is my final post on Ratings of the R&K show, I swear it is. ;0)
<bigklgfan>
05-26-2002, 02:49 AM
RnKnS--the 8 or 9 I mentioned is just locally-in NY. I'm not exactly sure how many people each point designates. Usually when Regis reads the overnight ratings he is talking about only local. Now "share" is a different story. That's where say there are 1000 tv's turned on at 9am what percent is watching a certain show. In the early to mid 90's R & K used to get between 30 and 40 percent. There were also a lot less stations back then and less to chose from. By the way, thanks for the welcome and YOU ARE one of the most fairest posters on here!

Didn't Mullen retire last year? I thought Regis mentioned it and then they showed Mullen and said Good bye. Could be wrong. I am known for that. Sandy
<RnKnS>
05-26-2002, 11:20 AM
Sandy,
You may be right, but I missed that show! He'd be too young to retire, but he may have moved on. Anyone else know? I notice Regis and Kelly sometimes talk to "Shullie"...maybe she took over for Mullen.
<RnKnS>
05-26-2002, 11:24 AM
BigKLGFan,
Thanks. While we're reminiscing (some will hate this thread and please feel free to ignore if you don't want to think back), I also miss the way KL used to sometimes talk like she had bad dentures. I thought of it again when Regis said the other day that he had been somewhere with Henry Schlief of Court TV. Knew KL would have picked up on that one.
Have a good one!
<Nicole>
05-26-2002, 12:48 PM
It's like any other hit. Look at Friends. Their show goes up and down in the ratings. They have had down time. And seeing EVERYTHING is down--I'll bet Judge Brown is scratching his head too. I still think it's Regis' fans who left. They got fed up with him taking too many vacations at once and just gave up on him. Gelman needs to spend money to promote the show more.
Maybe showing it in the evening also like The View to bring in more viewers.
But saying the show has never been down before Kelly is baloney. Second place is not exactly down. These are just my opinions.

Nicole -
Thanks for taking time to put that together.
I think it says it all - at least as far as how ratings were going with K.L. there. Definately a big improvement with Kelly!

RnKnS- I know you love travel trivia and you SHOULD!! But I miss when they had the old trivia game and Regis used to do that rediculous(sp) chicken dance to every song no matter what the beat. If they had time they really used to talk to the callers especially if they were particularly funny!! I also miss "Gelman, STAY OUT OF HOST CHAT!!" They didn't need little articles from the paper.
Nicole, do you have ratings from the period which I mentioned? Early to mid 90s. Their popularity was at an all-time high. All the stuff they did was new then. And they're still doing it now.
<vlanj>
05-26-2002, 03:59 PM
I also miss the Host Chat BEFORE the cut out articles. Regis would have the morning newspapers and his stories....it was great. It was fifteen to twenty minutes of good conversation.
Now we get a pile of articles and maybe, if Regis is lucky, he can finish a story. Yup, just not the same.
Does anyone remember when Kelly first came on board, did Gelman already start his cutting out for host chat? Or, did that idea develop as time went on?
<Jinh>
05-26-2002, 04:17 PM
As I recall, it was before Kelly. I started watching the show after K.L.G. left - I thought it was something he had always done.
<gailsie>
05-26-2002, 04:36 PM
Hey V, yeah, miss all that good stuff too! The only time you ever saw a paper or clipping in Reege's long fingernailed hand was when they did a taped show. He and KathieMee would read something Gelman thought would be interesting. It's a shame that now they kind of base their host chat on the clipping. Kind of makes "host chat" a misnomer since they really aren't "chatting," they are reading and commenting.
Well, if anything, I now have new respect for the old saying, "Be careful what you wish for, you may get it!"
Enjoy the rest of the week-end ladies!
<vlanj>
05-26-2002, 06:33 PM
...long fingernailed hand............ LOL, so funny. But when he was showing pictures last week, his nails looked good. Thank heavens---ugh, remember how Kathie always bugged him about them? lol
RnK: I don't remember Kathie talking like she had bad dentures---I do remember her spoofing Dear Abby. lol Regis always got a kick out of that one.
Man, you have really "lost" me here...
Wow... Kelly is ragged on big time for doing a "dance" thing for a couple of weeks... and now there is nostalgia for Regis and his silly "Chicken Dance", over and over??
More to the point, Regis is STILL telling Gelman to get the heck out of host chat... It is more than obvious you are no longer watching, KLGForever, and I admire your loyalty to KLG, but I think maybe you should catch a show or two before you etch your comparisons in stone..
Sorry, but the online printed "newsclips" Gelman has been garnering, IMO - of course, have to do with Gelman and his internet, savvy... Whether the 2 or 3 Regis fanatics want to admit that or not, the clips have nothing to do with Kelly, and everything to do with Gelman (IMO, again!)... Some are so ready to blame Gelman for any and all of Regis' faux pas (sorry, heading off the spelling police, I don't know the French plural of faux pas - faux pax??).. But anything Kelly does wrong (in their eyes, is only Kelly) LOL..
I still say, if after well over a year, some are still SO unhappy with the show, there are other options in that hour, I don't care what they say... The beach is only a walk away.. Kathy Lee has book recomendations up the wazoo... She is appearing in that "show" somewhere in your neighborhood.. Or maybe you could cook supper - oops... OK make reservations for supper, and watch the last hour of Katy and Matt...
Or whatever...
;0))

Vla, was that Dear Abby she was spoofing? She did something weird with her tongue with the "schl" sound. She also did a wonderful Indian man.
BigKLGFan, remember in trivia how they used to take several callers? If the first one didn't know it, they moved on....some of Regis' best moments were when nobody knew the answer and it was killing him. And KLG offering to send a CD or something to everyone who missed it...she was very sweet. And the old-fashioned map, he'd stick the pin in. Come to think of it, I don't miss seeing his fingernails every day! Most everyone knows this, but did you know I won twice during those years? It was a thrill.
Not sure who to blame for the clippings. Probably Gelman, you're probably right, PK. But Gelman was internet savvy long before the regular clippings came into play, so I don't know. Sorry PK, Regis' chicken dance was priceless. And you can't compare Regis' faults with Kelly's faults...it's apples and oranges. Will just leave it at that.
<RnKnS>
05-26-2002, 07:40 PM
I also remember KLG sending "Bobby" to go get a nail file one day, and she filed Regis' thumbnail during host chat. It was bugging her. I can see the Kelly fans going "ugh" but it was really very cute. I also remember Taryn running to get something from KL's dressing room at times. She attended a lot of stuff and liked to share the next day.
<gailsie>
05-26-2002, 08:26 PM
Enough already RnKnS, I am getting so nostalgic for the good old days. I remember the file the nail incident, I remember Taryn going in to get "stuff" for KL to share and I remember those darn push pins and Regis' long nails. And just for the record, I hated when KL did the Dear Abby impersonation and hated it even more when she did the Indian impression--what a surprise! But I did love their easy-going banter every day, each played off each other like a well-tuned orchestra. Ah, for the good old days!!!
P. S. Walked to the beach today to check out the striper fishing, a keeper caught today on clams right in front of my house. Mmmmmmm... nothing better than striper on the grill!
<Laraney>
05-26-2002, 10:13 PM
RnKnS, Wow lucky you, I knew you won travel trivia recently but where was your other trip to. One of these days I hope to get lucky. I was for a while taking notes every morning while watching the show but it almost took some of the enjoyment away. I haven't entered in a while. I'm going to do it soon though.
<bigklgfan>
05-26-2002, 10:40 PM
I remember one time where KLG wanted to cut his one nail that was bothering her and asked Bobby to get her clippers(industrial strength!!) and he came out with trimming shears for bushes! Then she had her own manicurist on to give him a pedicure right on the show.
PK-- I don't watch anymore. I quit the day Kathie left. I can only go by what I read here. It seems as though Gelman feels just in case they don't have much to talk about he has those articles ready. Maybe I'm wrong. But I also think that Kelly is afraid to share too many stories about her kids because of what happened to Kathie. Kathie knew that her fans loved to hear about her kids. Just like I read in some posts here that Kelly's fans would like her to talk more about her kids. Kids' stories are funny no matter who they're coming from. The misconception Kathie bashers have is that she thinks her kids are perfect. I can remember her telling many stories about when her kids were bad. Plus with Kathie, her being married to Frank, they have a lot of famous friends. Kathie bashers called it bragging when she would tell us about the parties and events she attended, and who was there, etc. when what she was really doing was talking about her life. Just like Regis does.
RnKnS, That's so cool that you've won those trivia contests. Do you remember when it was that you won? What else, besides the trip, did you win? I won a couple of times in the audience. Wouldn't it be funny if you were the caller who picked my number???
<RnKnS>
05-27-2002, 12:22 AM
BigFan,
The first time was about 9 years ago, I won a set of pots and pans and Farberware. My question was about the TV series Welcome Back Kotter.
I won again about 8 years ago. My prize that time was the Johnny Carson gift basket filled with videos, an autographed picture, mugs, etc. My question that time had to do with John Larroquette and the answer was Night Court.
You know about this time, the trip to Barbados. Will be going in November. Hoping to win again someday!

Keep sending those postcards! I'm here to tell you it works! I'd imagine their postcard count is down, with people not being so wild about traveling these days.
