Anyone watching? I am sure Regis must be on the egdge of his seat, ND was very sluggish until the 4th quarter. They were ahead by 7 but now Washington just tied the game and it seems as if they will go into overtime. I wish I could watch the end of the game, but I have to get to Target before my game starts at 8.

Thanks V for the good wishes. It was so close. I missed seeing kickoff, I was driving home from Target, but I was listening to it on the car radio, and I was worried listening to the first touchdown. But after that the Canes did not come and play until almost the end of the 3rd quarter. I was so excited last night until the last minute of the game, which put me on the edge of my seat. It was so close at the end, if only there was not that interception! :(
I think I would rather lose by a zillion points than like that, but we came so close to knocking the Canes off, hopefully they will move down in the polls and we will move up. Our quarterback is a true freshman so I was impressed with what he had accomplished. I am surprised at Brock's performance last night, he left the Gators on great terms, he is still friends with many of the players but I was hoping he would continue to have problems in the 4th quarter.
Ok done rambling, it was just so damn exciting until the end, imagine if we had beaten them?! But they only won by a few points, definitley not what everyone expected.

Oh I'm so sorry about what happened last night, Monica. What a heartbreaker!! I was flipping back and forth between your game and Oklahoma's, at first watching more of OK than yours when you were so far ahead. Then when I saw that Miami was picking up the pace I kept the station on ABC.
What a game!! When Miami finally started playing ball, I have to admit, I was rooting for them, just because they were so far behind, then finally started to do something. Then when they got a little ahead, after an amazing comeback, I started to hope the Gators were going to hang on to their lead, and win the game in the last few seconds! I know a win is what counts in the end, but I really believe your beloved Gators have a lot to be proud of after last night's game!
Now that you have that Spurrier monkey off your back, maybe you can win and lose some games and not be wiping egg off your face. JMO You know I never liked Steve Spurrier, now didn't you? lol
Good luck the rest of your season, it looks like it will be a good one.
Monica

Hey Jan- how did your team do? Yes I think our team has alot to be proud of, especially since most are true freshman. I just hope we improve in the polls. It was so exciting when we were ahead by 26 points throughtout most of the game.
I am not sure why you do not like Spurrier, but he is much nicer than Zook! Personally, I never felt like I was wiping egg off my face with Spurrier as the coach, under Spurrier we had the most winning seasons when he was here, plus he did alot of community work, and he took the time with the fans when they went up to him to talk. Yes Spurrier was a hard coach, he demanded alot, such as players were penalized if they missed curfew. I think if you lived in the same town as him, a small one such as Gainesville, and saw him around town all the time, you would view him differently. Remember what you thought of Susan Lucci, until you met her? I don't know what Spurrier is like at Washington, or if he still does community work, but he did alot for this area.
Yes I hope the rest of the season will be a good one! It should be. I hope everyone's favorite teams here do well!

Well I think we can agree to disagree about Spurrier, esp. since my opinion of him really doesn't count anyway. Maybe I would think more of him if I knew him as a community leader, and not as the coach who throws a temper tantrum on national TV. The fact that he's hard and expects a lot, is not what I don't like about him, that is plus as far as I'm concerned.
Our team won but it wasn't a very big game. We should've done much better than we did against them. We played the team that's on the bottom of the ratings. We were at the game, but I really think you can see the game better on TV. It's really fun to be there though with all the fans and high spirits.
They played very well, and we were lousy. We were in the Red Zone four times and could only make a field goal. We did get to see a different quarterback than Lord, and he did a great job!! We all hope to see a lot more of Dailey from NJ. He's a true freshman. We always do better when we have more than one quarterback we can use.
Our defense has done MUCH better! I'd say they're the reason we finally won last week.

Hi Jan, yes we will have to agree to disagree LOL You cannot tell what a person is really like such as Spurrier on tv. He freely shows his emotions on tv, holds nothing back, I think that is a good thing. Our new coach Zook is very closed and the two times that I have seen him around town has acted very unfriendly. I do not care how they act on tv, I care how they treat the players and the fans and if we win.
Your team sounds like ours, we also do better when there is more than one quarterback playing. Glad you won, but you probably wont move up much in the polls since the other team was not good. I hate the way they do the rankings for college ball, depends on how well you did last year, depends on the rankings of the other team and lastly how many points did you win by.
I agree that it is better to watch at home, I have gone to the Gators games, and even used to see the Bucs play all the time, but to relax in your own home, can use the bathroom when you want, much more relaxing. Seeing it in person really depends on where your seats are, I feel like I miss more when I am at the game. But it is also fun being with the other festive fans.

Driving down to Lincoln yesterday was fun. Bumper to bumper traffic the whole 45 or so miles!! I felt sorry for the lone car with NY state license plates in the middle of all that Big Red traffic, they had to wonder why the traffic was moving so slow when the speed limit posted is 75! Well, I don't know that for sure, b/c when we realized we weren't going anywhere, we got off the interstate and went the rest of the way on a two lane highway.
When we came back, they closed off the entrance to the interstate back to Omaha. They have gates for when the snow & ice forces them to close the interstate, but I never realized they would close the interstate to keep the volume of traffic down.

I meant to say I didn't know for sure if the traffic was bumper to bumper all the way to Lincoln, not if the NY driver wondered why traffic was moving so slow. I put that sentence in the wrong place.

I love that you gals know football so well! I just think that is so cool.
OMG, hope Regis' heart is holding out ok. He will undoubtedly have some words to say about his beloved Irish giving him a major scare against our WSU Cougs. IN South Bend, no less!

Monica, as far as moving up in the ratings, I was glad we got BACK INTO the ratings after last week! We hadn't been unrated at the start of a season for I don't know how many years!! We beat Ok St and traded places with them.
I hate too that the BCS rules put pressure to run up the score on a team just to gain standings in the polls. That kind of makes me sick. Some of these teams are only playing us or teams who ordinarily get spots on national TV to get experience and to get money for their schools. Usually our first three games are against teams who need national exposure. I don't know about other teams, I expect they do too, but we always put in our second and third strings when we are so far ahead. Then we build up our reserves for upcoming seasons when they're the starters. Of course the reserves could also be that good. Ours have been in the past and just keep on scoring.
One or two things I DO like about the BCS, is that now the place for the National Championship game moves around and we aren't limited to just playing in a certain bowl. It kinda stinks when Miami gets to play for the National Championship on their home field! I'm NOT saying championship football games should be played in Nebraska in January, lol. That wouldn't do much for tourism, now would it? I shudder at the thought.
We do have the College World Series here in June. Nebraska has only been in it two years that I can remember, and both times we were the first team eliminated, so the home field advantage didn't really make any difference. We do enjoy having it, although I stay as far away from Rosenblatt and the Zoo as I possibly can during that week, which is not hard, because we live nowhere near there anyway.

Hi Susan, thank you for the compliement. I enjoy college ball more than the pros. But I also will not just watch the games all weekend.
Jan you are lucky that you can take the interstate to the stadium! You would not believe the roads where I live, I truly believe that when they planned the roads that the college would grow so large! The majority of the roads are one lane, and there are only two one lane roads to get to the stadium! Talk about horrendous!!

As much as I disliked Steve Spurrier ( granted, the only reason was because he kept beating us, and beating us...ha), he was a great coach for Florida.
His antics got the fans just as fired up...just what they needed. :)
Anyway, go VOLS! :)

Morning Miss P- a voice of reason! Yes he did get us fired up and with his leadership we had a great winning season for as long as he was here. Now with Zook you guys have an excellent chance of winning....hope not but you do LOL

Oh and I forgot, thanks from me too, Susan. I love college football!! That's all we have in this state, but I get exhilerated from all the pride and excitement of college sports---particularly football. I still don't understand some of the calls, but I'm learning.
I started getting into college football in the mid-60's when my brother was at UNL. That was toward the beginning of the Bob Devaney era. He's the coach who brought back the pride and winning tradition to NE, then when I was college age, it was the early 70's when we got our first back to back national championships.
When I said two lanes, Monica, I meant one lane each direction, although the interstates here will take you directly to most anywhere in the state, most of the summer they're under construction. That's a main reason for the bumper to bumper traffic on Game Day.

Jan,
UNL=University of Nebraska-Lincoln? Is that the same school that we in the rest of the country know as Nebraska?
Our big schools are
UW - University of Washington (Seattle)
WSU - Washington State University (Pullman - small town on east side of state)

That's it Susan!! University of Nebraska at LIncoln. We also just have one Division 1 school in the state.
Well maybe there's Creighton University, but that's mainly a doctor, dentist, and lawyer college, and they don't have a football team. Probably can't take the chance of messing up their hands and other limbs. They're too busy making money off the ones that do get themselves messed up. lol Creighton is known for basketball, baseball & soccer.

Hey Monica,
If Spurrier does anything for or in the community, he is keeping it well hidden.
I am sure he was great for the College teams, but unless I miss my bet, going to the NFL was a huge mistake for him.
He just doesn't seem right here.
Of course, I am not much into football, and as far as I know, he could turn out to be great.
I just don't care for him, and gather that a lot of people in this area share my feelings.
Enough of me pretending to know what I am talking about.
Carry on girls.

Monica:
I could not believe the Canes came back, I suppose I should be happy for them, my Grandson is back at Miami this year. I guess he is going to split his college years between A&M and Miami, I really wanted you'll to win. I like the schools with sprit and we do have them represented on this board.
Now about the Aggies, it was a perfect football night, almost full moon, temperature in the mid 60's, and low humidity.
The Aggies, led Utah 21-0 at the half. Fabulous half time, the "Fightin Texas Aggie Band" marched for ten minutes. Played God Bless America with 76,000 plus Aggies singing.
I know they heard us in "Snook"....
Second half: Utah adjusted and the Aggies unadjusted?
Final score 28/26, so many yellow flags and incomplete passes the game lasted 4 hrs. A long drive home.

Ledhead..
The Aggies are coming to Lincoln on Oct 18th.
My recap of the Aggies playing Arkansas St on 8/30.
Woke up, looked out the window, what the heck is going on?
The Gulf looks mean, and she was so nice yesterday. Grace decided to visit us without calling first. Grace was a nice girl to a lot of home owners, she put the sand back under their foundations, Claudette had taken it with her. Now we have Isabelle, another female headed in this direction.
Now about the game, score 21/11. Our own "Tyler Rose" was running the third quarter kick off back 97 yards, BUT, his running mate dediced to "TRIP" him at the 20 yd line.
So be it o;)
Gig'em Aggies.

Shel,
I forget, what does the A&M stand for? And what is an Aggie? Some kind of steer? I don't mean to be a smart @$$, I really do want to know. There are a couple other teams that call themselves the Aggies too, aren't there?
At first I didn't know what you were talking about in your post about the game. I'm not sure I still understand. Is that what happened to cause you to lose this last game? Your "Tyler Rose" got tripped by his own teammate? Oh what a tragedy for your team!! I hope ya'll have better luck from now on!! Except on Oct 18th of course!
I just read your post again. I get it now.

Ledhead said, "Maybe I would think more of him if I knew him as a community leader, and not as the coach who throws a temper tantrum on national TV." That is the main reason I dislike the guy. Also, I heard he has a bad temper and can be real mean to his players.
Outsiders see things differently, sometimes. Just like I don't like Bobby Knight. I felt he would give the Big12 a bad name when Texas Tech hired him. I'll give him credit. He has done pretty good at controlling his temper.
Oklahoma State used to be Oklahoma A & M. It stood for "Agricultural and Mechanical."

Wow so many posts today! Just got home from the work and still have to get to the grocery store.
Sooner I think you are right that outsiders seeing things differently. If I did not live here I would probably feel the same way about Spurrier. As for him being mean to the players, he was strict and some people, and especially players did not like that. He had rules for the players, such as curfew, not missing practice because he/they thought he was too good, plus many more. He expected alot from them, but I think he was trying to help them for their future.
Hi Sandy, I know he did alot for the area here, but I wonder if it was easier, since he was not in the pro's and it is an extremely small town? Or maybe he has changed or doesn't have the time? I keep hoping he will come back here to coach but even if the Redskins got rid of him, he would have enough money from his contract that he would never need to coach again. I just know he did alot for the players, and this area, I just don't know if he is still the same. For the past ten years under his leadership we had the most winning season ever, won the most titles so he definitely knows how to coach.
There are alot of A & M Universities, there is one in Tallahassee, I think we are playing them next weekend? Too many I can easily get confused LOL
Hi Shel, did your grandson go to the A& M in Florida? How does he like living in Miami? Yes I could not believe that about the Canes, it should not have happened, I am guessing our defense decided to take the 6 hour bus ride home early (unless they took a plane?) A pro team would not have let that happened. Sorry to hear about your team
PK...

I hope I am not wrong... But I thought Shel said her grandson spent his time between Texas A&M in College Station, TX and the U of Miami Hurricanes...
My best friend and her Hubby are Miami grads... LOL back in the "Day", he played football there (also played in the Blue Gray game in one of those earlier 60s contests). He was a water skier there at whatever the resort of the time was... Sorry, I forget...
Do the Gators not recognize the Hurricanes??
;0))

What do you mean do we not recognize them? Of course we recognize them, but we wont be playing them again until 2008. As for the way the Canes played Saturday night, they did not come to play until the 4th quarter. Both teams lost quite a few players last year to the NFL.
stephanie
09-08-2003, 05:02 PM
yes, I thought Florida had that game...As much as I hate Miami, I gotta be happy they won since they're in our conference and you always want your conference to do well.
Monica
09-08-2003, 05:13 PM
Pk, I forgot to mention that many of the players from both schools are friends, many have gone to the same high schools here in Florida. So yes the Gators recognize and respect Miami. But they do call themselves the Canes and so do many others, even the sportscasters call them the Canes- just trying to make sense of the recognize comment? Still perplexed.
Hi Stephanie, I was so elated then pissed by the end of the game LOL I think it must have been hard for their quarterback Brock Berlin, he used to play for the Gators, then sat out all of last year because of transferring. He is still best friends with his former roommate, so I think his emotions that night must have been very high.
Will Miami still be in your conference next year? I heard that they want to change? Yes I agree about wanting your conference to do well.
Ok off to relax, have a good night.

PK and Monica, My Grandson, went to Miami his freshman year. He wanted to go to a school in another state. Met a girl from Pittsburgh. Last year he was at Texas A&M, after all he was born to Aggies . This year he is back at Miami with girlfriend and frankly Texas A&M is a much harder school. Yes, he loves Miami.
Stephanie: We play Virginia Tech on the 18th (on ESPN), BUT even though the team has played two really ugly ball games, hopefully our new coach and his young players, lots of So and Jrs will show up ready to play.
Ledhead: No STEER, that is the other team, the one PK is going to play this Saturday. We HATE each other ;)
In Texas it seems every family has an Aggie branch and a teasip branch.

Monica- yes, Miami will still be in our conference next year because we're both (Maimi and VA Tech) going to the ACC.
We always call Miami the Canes- in fact some of their hats just say "Canes".
Shel- yes, I'm looking forward to that game next Thursday night. Hopefully, you're guys will show up ready to play -but not too ready!;)

I wasn't trying to tie A&M with Texas Longhorns, I know they're different, way different. I was just trying to figure out what an Aggie is. Again, I'm not trying to be cute, obviously you can all wreak havoc with the name Cornhuskers, lol.
It was the longest time before I ever got what the Sooners were. They always came out with a wagon during half-time so I gather they're some kind of pioneer?
