Hi all!! I'm new here (ha!) - no, actually, I've been readinga about Boxing Day, but would like to hear about it from "real people", not reporters! What do all you Canadians do for boxing Day?? Does everyone participate?? Is it a national Holiday for all of you???
Thanx in advance for your help!!!

Hi Skeeter I think it's the same for us as you. Stores are open but not banks etc.. we got a good price on a 47" flat screen t.v. today.
Other than that I stayed home and just did some cleaning around the house.

But doesn't Boxing Day refer to giving to the poor, etc.? Or is it a holiday that "used to be"?
By the way, our banks were open today! Well, I take that back. I didn't go, so I don't know that for sure. I know our doctor's office was open.... :(

How about that old wives tale that Boxing day celebrates the removal of all the boxes from Christmas... <grin>
Dani, did you get a projection TV, or one of those thin ones you can hang on the wall??
We just got a 36 Incher yesterday. My Gosh, is it heavy. May have to get the neighbor to help put it in the cabinet. It may prove to be one of those "be careful what you wish for" things...
Then there's all the other stuff to hook up to it, and it has so many more options... Sigh...

PK I have no freaking idea LOL I do know we can not hang it on the wall. All I know is it is a hdtv. Flat screen and we may have to knock out a wall or two to get it in here!! We had to go out and but a cabinet to go around it for all our dvd stuff etc... He got the t.v and I got a beautiful cherrywood cabinet so all is well. I will send a pic when everything is all set up. Oh it also has PIP half screen.

I believe Boxing Day is a British holiday, where the superiors at work trade places with the workers for a day.

Skeeter, I have heard that the Sony Mavica is a good camera. I have a digital that I use for business, but for the life of me, I can't think of the brand. It is nice, but you can probably get a much "fancier" one. I will look when I go out to the car tomorrow.
I think you want to get one that uses a "smart card" as it holds more images. BUT...for a technically challenged person like myself, the one that holds a disk (the size of what your computer tower holds)seems pretty easy to use.
Gee...all of a sudden I realized that in trying to help you, I have probably totally screwed you up!!!!
About the plasma tv's...we had a big screen that was about 10 years old, and DOMINATING the room it was in. The best thing that came our way was the plasma. Yes, the picture is great....but I love that it frees up space in your room!!!
Danielle, thank God hubby can't put the TV in your cabinet!!! ;)

Hubby thoroughly researched digital cameras before making his selection about a year and a half ago...
He chose a Nikon CoolPix 995. It is a 2 (I think) megapixel with a 3X optical zoom. It was not inexpensive - he did not want to go through another purchace down the road... The picture quality is extremely good in just the average resolution jpegs. We have never utilized the top end of the resolution. For the average photo hound, anything over 2 megapixels is probably overkill, anyway...
In this average mode, I don't know HOW many pix you can store on a 128MB smart card, cause we've never filled it up. But there were over 200 on it at one time... The quality in the average mode was good enough to print out excellent half page prints. I have not tried a full 8X10 yet.. (I do have a very good printer, which is every bit as important as the camera if you intend to print them..)
The CoolPix can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be, from point and shoot to fiddle for 10 minutes. Hubby has gotten himself in trouble with the fiddling, though, when he forgets to "unfiddle" or "refiddle" before changing circumstances...
You can look through the eye piece, or see the subject on the built in screen, whichever suits your fancy.
You will also want a card reader for your computer so you don't have to take them directly out of the camera. They are relatively inexpensive. They even have universal types that will read all the variations... The Nikon uses Compact Flash cards. Sony uses their own little memory stick, others use another variation..
I would suggest starting with the maximum amount you want to spend and then compare models in that price range... Be sure to include incidentals like lenses, filters, extra smart card etc..
Windows XP will automatically take care of transfering your pix from your smart media as soon as you plug it in the reader..
On another note, re printing the pix... I read where the photo places will be making a play to print your digital pictures, saving you the hassle and the mistakes... Interesting..
Good shopping, Skeeter!

OK...I wrote this once!!!! :(
Thanks for your help, PK and MsP....we don't have a floppy drive on our new computer, just cd/rw....still debating about whether or not we need it....
I tried to look up your hubby Nikon, PK....I found a review for it but nowhere to buy it!!! Interesting....I'll keep looking.
My sister has a Canon A70 that she loves, so I'm checking into that.
Any other words of wisdom anyone has would surely be appreciated....
:)
Joy your day, all!!

What the heck is froogle google??????????????? Never heard of it. I googled, but didn't froogle....
Thanks for the link!!! I love this camera. I'm going to the library this week to check out consumer reports and see what I'm getting myself into. I've been reading reviews on line of each of the cameras, and what I did find on this one, was good....
Thanks, PK!

"www.froogle.com" is Google's product search engine, and is accessible at that url... Though, I have actually had better luck just using Google... Maybe you plugged the name in wrong?
I guess you noted I was wrong on both the megapixels AND the optical zoom feature... 3.3 and 4x rather than 2 and 3x..
The camera has a standard and wide angle built in, so that is pretty nice. Hubby did get a Nikon wide angle lens to add to it, that really lets you take a wide shot. From the software that comes with it, you can take your own panorama sequence of shots, and use the software to seamlessly join them. It works pretty well...
You can also take short videos with the camera... He only tried that once, but it's pretty kewl... They are small if your monitor is set to a high resolution..

I did notice the megapixel difference, etc. and figured your were off by one. Everything I've read says "3"....
We aren't looking to start our own photography studio, by any means, just want nice shots to remember, and send to friends and family, and maybe save ourselves some money at the photographers!! :)
I'll keep you posted!! :)

Boxing Day
The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. The term may come from the opening of church poor boxes that day; maybe from the earthenware boxes with which boy apprentices collected money at the doors of their masters' clients.
Nowadays, we often see, in certain families, gifts (boxes) given to those who provide services throughout the year.
"Boxing Day" is listed in the Canada Labour Code as a holiday.

Skeeter we have the Canon A 40 as well as the Canon A60 and are very happy with both. They are very user friendly and our photos are extremely clear. Just make sure you don't get digital zoom. As Pk said a card reader is a great idea. It uploads our photos so quick.
Happy shopping.
