A Mother's Day 'dream come true'
Surprise: A daughter in Columbia writes in to 'Live with Regis and Kelly' and wins a van for her 'deserving' single mom.

Aida Jones-Goins said she was curious when she saw a shiny red van with a large red bow pull onto her street in Columbia last week. She thought a neighbor's husband had bought his wife a gift.

She was stunned when the van pulled up to her house and a petite woman got out of the front seat calling her name.

"It's Kelly!" Jones-Goins shouted, putting her hands to her cheeks in disbelief.

Television host Kelly Ripa had arrived at Jones-Goins' Hickory Ridge townhouse with a Mother's Day surprise: Jones-Goins was a winner in a contest sponsored by the morning talk show Live with Regis and Kelly.

Her daughter Kellie Jones had written a letter about how Jones-Goins cares for her five children, including a daughter with physical and developmental disabilities.

So Live gave Jones-Goins a wheelchair-accessible Dodge Grand Caravan and a two-year lease on a furnished, five-bedroom Ellicott City apartment.

"I was in huge shock," Jones-Goins said. "It felt like a dream the entire time it was happening to me. To be standing there in front of Kelly Ripa. I was having an out-of-body experience."

The surprise was taped Tuesday. On Friday, Julie and Kellie Jones, along with Kellie's 11-month-old daughter Tamera, joined Jones-Goins, her co-workers and friends to watch the show at Howard Community College, where Jones-Goins is a part-time student and works as a lab consultant.

Jones-Goins held her granddaughter and wiped away tears as other mothers were shown winning a trip, a new kitchen and a serenade from country singer Dolly Parton.

Then her daughter Kellie came on the screen. Quoting from the letter she wrote, she said her mother is "a single mom with no help from anyone." Kellie explained how Jones-Goins cares for Ashley, 15, who has the genetic disorder incontinentia pigmenti.

Ashley's wheelchair doesn't fit in Jones-Goins' car, so "we can't take my sister out much," Kellie said.

And, Kellie said, Jones-Goins has not had a bedroom of her own for years.

In addition to Kellie, Tamera and Ashley, Jones-Goins shares her home with daughter Tiffany, 16, and son Scott, 12. Julie Jones, 31, lives nearby.

"She takes care of her children first and herself last," Kellie said of her mother.

Kellie said she watches Live every day and was looking for an opportunity to write to the show about her mother. When she found out her family won, "I was running around the house," she said.

Jones-Goins was touched by her daughter's effort. "I just kept looking over at her and thinking this is the most beautiful thing she has ever done for me besides giving me a grandchild. ... She allowed them to give me a gift that was not so much a luxury, but a necessity."

Jones-Goins said she likely would forgo the new apartment and allow the show to pay the rent on her home in Columbia instead.

She said she likes the neighborhood and her children's schools, and she can walk to work at Howard Community College, where she also is studying medical transcription.

"If anyone was ever more deserving, it's her," said co-worker Wanda Garcia of Ellicott City. "It always feels good to see good people win."
----------------
Hope they allow her to stay in her neighborhood, but she will still not have a bedroom... Guess that's not very high on her list of priorities...

That was nice. I was unable to watch ALL the show. What I DID watch, I had tears in my eyes.

Here's an article on one of the other mothers:

‘Super Mom’ gets makeover in front of 6 million

By BILL REED - THE GAZETTE

Brenda Spillane was due for a little pampering.

That’s what the TV show “Live with Regis and Kelly” gave her last week.

The Colorado Springs resident has 12 children ages 13 to 32, has 22 grandchildren and has been married 33 years.

She gave birth to the kids naturally at home and home-schooled them, teaching as many as seven grade levels at once.

As an Army wife, she moved several times, to different continents, while pregnant.

In her mid-50s, Spillane has five children at home, but she’s been forced back to work. She is a full-time administrative assistant at The Spa at The Broadmoor, while working a second job on evenings and weekends at Michaels craft store. Two of the children in this Mormon family are on mission, and she wanted to help pay for it.

“We call her ‘the mom of the spa,’” said Ella Stimpson, director of The Spa at The Broadmoor. “If you don’t know where something is, you go to Brenda. If you want to know who to call, you go to Brenda. If you feel like crying, you go to Brenda — because she’ll give you a hug and she’ll listen.

“I have never met a more giving, generous spirit.”

Meet Brenda Spillane, Super Mom.

Those qualities inspired her grown daughter, Rachel Spillane Smith, of St. George, Utah, to write a letter to “Live with Regis and Kelly.” The show was looking for deserving moms to receive makeovers, and Smith knew her mom was the perfect choice.

“She made everything seem like it wasn’t a burden,” Smith said. “My mom’s quiet, she’s never liked a lot of attention. We think it’s about time she was recognized.”

Smith waited for a break from her four kids, wrote her letter and then hid it between the bills so her husband wouldn’t make fun of her Regis Philbin obsession.

“My mother has been the foundation of our family,” the letter read. “She cooked, cleaned, sewed all our clothes, helped us develop talents and taught us in home school. . . . My mother is an amazing woman who has never expected anything in return or recognition for all she did for us.”

Brenda Spillane was chosen for the show from 9,000 letters.

Producers surprised her at The Broadmoor on April 27, flying her and Smith to New York for a week of TLC with a beauty dream team made up of a cosmetic dentist, stylist, makeup artist, dermatologist and hair stylist.

“It was very uncomfortable for me (to be fussed over), but I got more comfortable as it went along,” Spillane said.

Michael Gelman, executive producer of “Live with Regis and Kelly,” said Spillane’s selflessness and upbeat approach to life set her apart. Plus, 12 kids and two jobs are impressive numbers.

“She was a very sweet lady,” Gelman said. “You try to pick mothers where you can have an effect and actually give them what they want.

“She was a very pretty woman to begin with, but she looked great by the end of the week.”

Spillane’s makeover was broadcast Tuesday to about 6 million viewers as part of a week of Mother’s Day-themed shows on “Live with Regis and Kelly.”

“You can tell that she feels great about herself,” Smith said. “It lit something in her that hasn’t been there in a long time.

“The most lasting thing was the dentist. She’s been so self-conscious of her smile her whole life. While she was happy, she was always timid about her smile.”

Spillane is thrilled with her new grin. Her dentist pulled some of her teeth recently, but she hadn’t saved up the money for crowns.

“When I smiled before, I looked like a witch,” she said. “I thought, ‘I don’t want to scare people.’ It’s a social barrier, and it’s gone now.”

Her husband, Tom Spillane, said his wife gets better every year.

“I think it’s her natural instinct to be concerned with other people, whether they’re her children or complete strangers,” Tom Spillane said. “She doesn’t ask herself, ‘How hard is it going to be for me to help this person?’

“She’s always been beautiful to me, and they made her very pretty.”

Hi Regis & Kelly,
I wanted to do something nice for my mother. She always goes out of her way for me and I would just like to do something nice for her. She was in and out of prison my whole life. And shes been home for 6 years now and all she does is work. We've never got the chance to get close. My grandparents raised me. I can honestly say were never even been to the movies together. Shes 40 years old and she also has 2 other daughters she never gets to see. She had a hard life with my grandparents. She practially raised my uncle because my grandparents were never home. They lived in and out of Housing Authories and she never got to have anything when she was a kid. I feel so bad I cant do anything for her. Shes taking care of me and my grandfather. My grandmother passed away 3 years ago and its been hard on all of us. Thank you for listening and hopefully we can do something nice for her. Thanks alot Reg & Kel. Hope to see ya soon.
Love,
Tiffany Mitchell
