Did anyone watch the Jacki O Show last night? I did--on tape since I had dinner with some of my painting students last night. I loved the show in the respect that it gave a lot of historical info and it was great to see the pics of Jacki wearing the original jewelry. I was bummed that everything sold out--watching it on tape didn't give me the opportunity to buy one thing! I went on waitlist for the watch--I like that it is a Seiko as far as the movement goes....But I could have bought the starburst pin and the pearl and diamond bracelet in a heartbeat!

Hey Stel - No, I turned it on about half-way through when everything was sold out! Was it just one designer or different ones? They must not have had huge quantities to sell out that quickly?

Hi Stel, I saw only one tiny part of the show and that was the watch while it was being posted as "Sold Out". That's very cool that it is a Seiko. Let us know if/when you get it please :)

I watched the first hour and admit from a historical aspect it was very interesting, and the pictures were great. This use to be on HSN for quite awhile it seems. I never bought anything as I normally do not by custume jewelry. I wish at least some of the pieces would have been in sterling silver , but then the price would really be high...

Darn!!! Missed it. Being from Boston originally, that really makes me mad that I missed it. What was the quality like? Did they have Jackie's wedding ring from JFK... a knock-out emerald and diamond bypass? I would love to have that in the real deal. Geez, I don't want much! LOL

I saw the show and loved it. It was so wonderful to relieve the Kennedy years, and see pictures of her. The jewelry was lovely too, and the next time I would love to get a piece.

I've seen the guest all over TV, but not on HSN. The show
ended an hour early. I thought the most interesting tidbit
was when neither JFK or his parents would buy her an
incredibly expensive piece, she sold the piece her in-laws
gave her for a wedding present, had a copy made (I assume
without their knowledge) and bought the sunking diamond
brooch. Fun to watch but I couldn't imagine wearing
it--seemed dated or just too stately for my lifestyle.
I thought about the flag pin as a gift. Saw the show
of her gowns at Kennedy Library (I'm from Boston, too)
The jewelry did seem perfect for the style. Marybeth
said she went to the Library when they were considering
the show. Wonder who gets the profits--sounds like the
Kennedy's do have a say.

Yes, they did have her ring--it was gorgeous. The guy did say the pearl and CZ bracelet was overlaid with platinum....Don't know about the rest of the metals.

I am a huge fan of Jacki O and collect biographies on her....I read in one how Aristotle had her on an allowance, and it wasn't enough for her. Now, her clothing didn't come out of the "allowance", so she'd buy a boatload of designer clothes, sell them at a second-hand store and supplement her "allowance" that way!

I also heard that she ordered (or had someone order for
her)multiple pair of gloves from the Q. Could be true--
there was a time (70's) when it was nearly impossible
to find Spring/Summer gloves and she hid her hands--
she was a nailbiter and chain smoker. And she did buy in
multiples--100's at a time. Have you read the most recent
book by Sally Bedell Smith? It's supposed to give the
the most insightful and flattering picture of her.

Momof2

There must be tremendous pressure being First Lady and also being a Kennedy. No wonder she bit her nails and chain smoked.

My thought EXACTLY ... who is designing and who is benefiting from this line? I was curious. I saw a few minutes, but the few pieces that I saw were way over the top. Maybe I would have liked pieces shown later in the show.

I too have read many biographies on this era and this family. I have sort of a hate/love thing. The utter disregard of common sense and sheer recklessness with which some have approached life, have been infuriating to read about over the years, but that is what makes them interesting, I suppose.

lancaster

She bit her nails and chainsmoked before she was a
Kennedy.Actually, the Kennedys had to cooperate with
this venture because the guest said that some pieces
were cast from the original pieces.

ST--Being a staunch Republican, I too have the love/hate thing going! I think the time in the 60's was kind of magical--Jacki brought such class to the White House. I am disgusted by the following generations riding on the coattails and wrecking the family name. The only one who turned out decent is Caroline. Oh, and Maria Shriver too.

I'm a dedicated liberal Democrat. When I was very young
I thought I was related to F.D.R. because my mother had
a photo of him with her in our family pictures. But
I think the Kennedy's are athing apart. Living in Massachusetts
I've seen how much Teddy has done and when Joe was in the
House he was very good. Also, one of Robert's daughters
has held office. When I was in trouble years ago and
couldn't get a medication that wasn't FDA approved, Teddy's
office got it for me. And I was just a voice on the phone,
nobody "important." I guess I am of the "love the sinner,
forgive the sin." Jackie fascination crosses all lines--
how many women do we have that are recognized by their
first names. She created a style of her own. Originals
don't come along too often.

Lancaster--what an eloquent post! : ) I thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad to hear Teddy's office helped you. I never hear stuff like that (listening to Rush and Sean Hannity).

I just started reading a GREAT book--called "What Jacki Taught Us"--forgot the author's name, but if you like her, you may want to check it out.

I told my boss this past Friday, had John Jr. lived and ran for president some day, he would be the first, and probably only , democrat I would vote for. I would have done it for a couple of reasons--to honor his mom, and to have some hope that he could return some of the excitement and magic to the White House.

Stel, I hate to tell you this, but Sen. Kerry's wife
is amazing. (I'm not commenting on Kerry--I don't want
to turn this into a political site--things are bad enough.)
I went to a symposium on women's health three years ago
that she sponsored. She also spoke. Very European
elegant in a low key way. Beautifully dressed and groomed--
very little jewelry--a wedding set and watch. I've also
seen them together, in jeans, holding hands. She has that
I didn't try hard look that looks great.

Lancaster, I agree about Mrs. Kerry... a class act. Did you know that she's 65 years old? She looks great!!! I also happen to admire Laura Bush. I like her style a lot.

lancaster
06-27-2004, 08:33 PM
Yes, Ms. Kerry is two or three yrs older than her
husband. I like Laura Bush, a pretty woman, but I wish
her hair didn't look like she was attacked by Aquanet.
She's a class act, but not a very exciting one.

Momof2
06-27-2004, 09:19 PM
Love the aquanet comment :D Good observation! Laura B. isn't exciting but she's a nice change, from Hillary. I admire Hillary, but I don't like her. Does that make sense?

bigfatstel
06-28-2004, 03:27 AM
Oh you guys, I want to play nice so bad with you two right now, but I can't! I have brain seizures when I see Hillary--she scares the crap out of me....And Mrs. Kerry.....well, let's just say all my right wing conspiracy propaganda doesn't allow me to believe anything besides she is one notch below Hillary on the evil scale! : )

But I respect both of your opinions....Laura B. is a bit bland for me. I miss Barbara! Now, she was cool!

But no one will ever top Jacki. She just was magical....... : (

I loved Jackie too.. like a princess! I forgot about Barbara. I actually have a signed letter from Barbara when she was 1st lady. I had written to her re: a speech she gave when Mrs. Gorbachev was visiting in D.C. I never expected a response, but she sent me a lovely letter which I had framed (it's on white house stationery). It's really cool. As for Mrs. Kerry, I was talking more about how she looks. I don't know what kind of 1st lady she would make. Laura is bland, but that's ok. I am too, sometimes... guess that's why I like her.

bigfatstel
06-28-2004, 11:10 AM
Wow, that is the coolest thing--having that letter! I have a picture of George W. that I took on my desk....My boss and I went to a GW rally, and okay, no attacks here, pushed some boy scouts out of the way so we could be in the front row! When one of the moms complained, I told her that her kid was 10 years away from voting--we had priority! I was wept up in the moment, and my boss is a HORRIBLE influence on me! : ) Anyways, GW was saying part of his speech in Spanish, and Daryl, my boss, yelled out "Viva la Bush" and W stopped and looked at him like a lunatic. THAT'S right when I snapped the picture--it is PRICELESS!: )

Stel, I can't stop laughing. And yes, I said I wanted
to keep politics out of it. Was talking about style.
But hate to tell you Theresa was a registered Republican
until her present husband joined the race. Met Barbara
Bush--one smart cookie--maybe the smartest Bush. And
a genourous woman. When her youngest son, Marvin, nearly
died from ulcerative colitis, she was so grateful to
the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation for the help they
provided, she did a print PSA and insisted on using the
White House photographer. But, yes, I don't think there
will be another Jackie.

bigfatstel
06-29-2004, 03:25 AM
Oh, I know she was a registered Republican--that is one of the problems I have with her--I hate FLIP FLOPPERS! If you have a belief and a conviction, it shouldn't change with your husbands career plans. Her first husband was a R senator, right?

Cool story about Barbara--didn't know that! Thanks for sharing it! : )

lancaster
06-29-2004, 05:36 AM
Her first husband was a Republican senator for years. He
was also an heir to the Heinz fortune. When it was
said that ketchup should be counted as a vegetabe in
school lunches, he announced that was not what his family
intended it for. He was very handsome. He died young and suddenly--
I'm not sure if it was a plane crash or something like
a heart attack. He was much loved by members of both parties.
Theresa changed her party when she decided to help
campaign for her husband. Her son is campaigning also. She in
herited an enormous fortune, but she said she wouldn't use
her money unless her husband's character was attacked. Initially,
she was considered a wild card but turned out to be a great campaigner. Like Jackie she speaks many languages. The interesting thing is that Jackie's family were staunch Republicans and Jackie
said till she met JFK no one in her family had ever voted for a
Democrat. First Ladies are great fun to talk about but please no
politics Stel.

Yes, I read the "Kennedy Curse." I think I've read every
Kennedy book. I have two on reserve at the library.
"What Jackie Taught Us" and the one by Sally Bedell Smith.
And I saw the Jackie exhibit three times at the Kennedy
Library. She said two things I'll always remember.
"A lot of terrible things happened to me, and I didn't
go crazy" and "If you don't do a good job bringing up
your children, nothing else counts"

Lancaster, I don't think it's your place to say "No politics." We can discuss that here, can't we, without getting ugly? Democrats suck! Just teasin'. I voted for my democrat governor, and he is awesome, although I love my republican president, too!

You know, Hillary Clinton was Republican too, although she changed camps well before Bill was president/governor. I read her book and can't remember why she switched, but she worked on a lot of Republican campaigns during her college/law school years. I personally don't mind people who switch... I'd certainly classify myself one way, but I never vote on a ticket. I vote individually for the best candidate for the job (if that's possible in politics!), no matter the party association.

My opinion on this Kennedy curse thing is ... HOGWASH. Yes, the family has suffered many tragedies; what family hasn't? Perhaps the tragedies seem more profound or numerous because they've been so public. Many of these "cursed" things happened to them and not to my family because of the kinds of access and money this family has, PERIOD. Afterall, how many of us travel in and own private planes? It is doubtful that I will ever die in a private plane that I'm piloting because I can niether afford the lessons (money or time) or the aircraft. How many of us have the money to go to Colorodo with such frequency that we get careless about skiing protocol? So often included in this "curse" are Teddy's Chapiquadick episode and William Kennedy Smith's Florida Rape trial. Both of these things happened (without hashing out all the finer details) because each of these men made VERY poor choices and found themselves in very compromising situations. Situations available to them because of money and who they were. Some have even included Michael Skakel on the "curse." Give me a break. He isn't even a Kennedy. How many are we going to include to make the numbers appear even MORE staggering.

It can also be argued that money not only allowed them to be in certain situations but it paid for a lifetime of alcohol (Teddy) or drugs that most definitely impaired decisions and, at least in one case, led to death (David). Robert, Jr., Joe Jr., and Michael all had scrapes with the law due to their addictions to drugs and/or alcohol. Money made the addictions easier to thrive and money gave them a huge compound on which to grow wild and unsupervised. You've read, as I have, the questions hurled at Ethel's parental skills. Jackie saw the huge amount of freedom RFK's kids were given and was determined that her kids would have limited exposure to that. Rose's nurse commented on the unsupervised grandkids as well. AND don't get me started on the amount of arrogant, foolish behavior that was undertaken with disasterous results (Micheal skiing BACKWARDS AND playing touch football!! John's decision to fly solo in fog at night with no license in instrument flying).
Sorry, I had to rant but I get so TIRED of hearing about this "curse." Don't get me wrong, this family has had more than its fair share of heartbreaks and tragedies, but many came with the rarified territory upon which they were allowed to and chose to tread with great frequency.

bigfatstel
06-29-2004, 05:21 PM
ST--I AGREE 100% with you! I don't look at it like a curse that they were bestowed with--I view it as a curse they brought on to themselves. They all behaved very reckless and thought they were invincible--no doubt! That is just a fact. If I remember correctly, the book we are referring to kind of made that same point.

Don't get me on the subject of Teddy--he should be rotting in jail. To think he got a free pass for killing a woman blows my mind.

William Kennedy Smith--slimeball at best--rapist at worst....

You know, I really love Jacki O and her kids. However, John Jr. followed the same path as his irresponsible cousins....He made a promise to his mother that he wouldn't take pilot lessons. She told him that too many Kennedys died in plane crashes, and she didn't want him to fly his own plane. He promised, and broke the promise once she died. To me, that is reprehensible.....and ironic.....

SO, once again, the curse is brought on by some bad behavior.

Is this a great thread or what? What a pleasure to read. Our country is so polarized we will not agree on everything but we do all agree Jackie O was special, and so is her daughter Caroline. She works for the NYC public school system pro bono to help children.

I think this "curse" thing started because of two
assasinations and then it got out of hand with the next
generation. I think the best book on the Kennedy's was
Doris Kearns Goodwin's. Not at all sensational, but a
fascinating read. The old man was the worst of the lot;
they had to keep him out of public view during JFK's campaign.
Living in Boston, I've met people with pretty wild stories
about Joe and Rose--not knowing if they're true, and even
if they were, I simply would not post them on the internet.
But Jackie--I always am in awe of how she handled the
funeral--I think she was only about 32.

SnowTiger
06-29-2004, 09:49 PM
Goodwin is a true historian. Many of the other writers are just that, writers. They know a book about the Kennedys will sell so there you are.

Old Joe was a MAJOR Perv!!! So many books recall his extramarital activities. He hit on the girlfriends of his sons and they just made jokes about their dad! Is that not sick? EWWWWW. He and JFK both had relations with a couple of the same women. I believe Marlene Dietrich's daughter Maria recalled that JFK was interested in having a go with her mom because the old man had been there before. Crude, but that is how she described his attitude.
