Hey guys, since there are so many puter people here, I have a ?..when going off, say over nite, do you shut power, hibernate or stand by? I seem to get such diverse opinions from friends and family. I usually shut power, and then sometimes i use stand by mode, which seems to save time. How do you do it?

I shut mine down, too. It bothers me to leave things on! I know people who say they should be left on.
I don't know what is right.

If you have an OLDER computer, it might be better to turn it off at night but the newer ones (past 5 years) are different and the concensus is that it is REALLY tough on the hard drive to keep turning it on and off. I have some friends that were turning theirs on and off several times a day! That hard drive probably wouldn't have lasted them very long AT ALL!
I only turn mine off if I am going to be out of town or if the weather is bad enough that the electricity might go off. Otherwise, I have it going all day and at night I just sign out of Windows.
JMHO :)
We recently purchased a Dell (not from the Q); we have ours on 24/7.

Spooie, loved your reply..I intend to leave it on too, however for overnite do you use stand by mode, hibernation, or just walk away leaving home page on, which I understand shuts down power so pc has to reboot.

I never shut mine all the way down. It's way too tough on the hard drive. I just sign out of all active windows and then I turn the monitor off.

Lisa - I just sign out of windows (start/shutdown/restart) which just takes me out of the operating system and deletes all the daily crap that I have it set to delete upon restart, and it leaves me on the windows sign-in screen (I have WinXP) and then, after 15 minutes, it goes to the WinXP screen saver.
Then, in the morning, I sign back into Windows and stay on all day. I have DSL so I only have to sign into Windows and I'm set. :)

Oh, PS: I just noticed that somebody mentioned turning off their monitor. Now, and I certainly could be wrong, I understand that you should NOT turn off the monitor unless you have turned the computer off first. And, in the same vein, if you are turning the computer back on, you should always turn the monitor on FIRST so that you aren't turning the computer with the monitor off. (Did that make any sense?)
I got this info a couple years ago from some computer guru...so who knows...

I posted that.
Really? Why? What was his reasoning for that?
