View Full Version : New Host Line-Up Needed

StillN/A
10-03-2004, 08:40 AM
While watching QVC, it came to me that I didn't enjoy QVC as much as I used to. I think the reason why I don't enjoy QVC as much as I used to is based on the fact that the hosts in general are boring, substandard, and mechanical. There are no great personalities on QVC. It seems as if the hosts are going through the automated motions without really caring about what they are doing. QVC really needs to shake up the host line-up. There are a lot of hosts on QVC who is detrimental to the future of the station. They need to hire those hosts, really spend time searching for new ones, and continually change their host line up when needed. Who is on my list to fire and who may stay? Well read on.
*warning: this is a long post and can be seen as semi-negative.

From most urgent to least urgent:
LAURIE SHORE...just a bad host. Host skills are subpar all expectations.
JILL BAUER...very arrogant, snooty, egotistical. The ice queen with the hard sell. She brings nothing unusual to the table.
LISA ROBERTSON...I used to like her. But now I find that her presentations center around herself and only herself. She thinks she owns QVC. That isn't a good image for QVC. Yes, she is funny but her arrogance ruins all of her personality. There are many hosts qualified for fashion and others can take her place.
RICK DOMIER...I am blown away by his disrespect for everything QVC. Very rude, egotistical, and dominating. If Lisa R and him had a child together, the egotistical genes in that child would be off the chart.
LEAH WILLIAMS...Comes off as very forced and fake. Her laugh is annoying and I have heard many people comment that they turn her off when she goes into maniac laughing fits. Her laugh is secondary for the cut, her forced and fake presentations coupled with a non-distinct hosting style cut her.
BOB BOWERSOX...He has seniority on the staff. In a way, some people tihnking about the good old days of QVC will miss him. That is why I waited after a few hosts to cut him. However, he is really boring in his hosting style. He does cooking shows in which anyone could do and Dave V. does them better than him.
DAN WHEELER...Boring and the church references really get him in some hot water with the less religious people. Nothing special to him.
PAT JAMES DeMENTRI...Her hosting skills are sub par. There is nothing distinct about them and she is guilty of the most mechanical presentations of all the female hosts. I feel as if all emotion and feeling about the products are gone and she is doing this job because she has to, not because she wants to. I don't get excited to watch her when she is on. She is just flat.
CHRISTA PITTS...I kind of see her as the new Pat James DeMentri. There is nothing there when she hosts. There is no personality and I sense a hint of arrogance. It's not at the level of Lisa R or Jill, but it is there. There is nothing to her that makes me want to watch her.
LENA McILWAIN...I see her as Leah 2.0. The newer Leah. It is almost as if they cloned Leah. She does not possess to a high degree the annoying qualities of Leah yet there are there and widely seen. Her laugh is equally as annoying and her hosting skills are equally as non-descript.
SHARON FAETSCH...There is nothing to keep her around. Again, she just doesn't have a personality to show on camera. I feel as if I am a broken record talking about personality and the host's ability to possess it, but it is really important. If you are boring to watch, no one will watch you. It is really important. There is no point in hiring someone who lacks personality.
PATTI REILLY... This is one of my toughest firing. The problem with Patti is she is inconsistent. One day she is a great host. The next day she does the worst presentations I have seen on TV. It is almost like will the real Patti please stand up? As a QVC host, you need to be consistently good. If a first time customer sees a subpar host, then they will stop watching.

Who is on the bubble
SHEILA and ANTONELLA- these ladies are new to QVC. They really haven't developed an on air personality. However, they have the potential to develop it and to be good hosts. They could either rise to the occassion and be fantastic hosts or go on a downward spiral like Laurie to the point that they become the worst hosts on the staff. If I was starting a new QVC host lineup, they are the wildcards. Usually you don't want unpredictable hosts on your lineup. However, who is to say that the new hosts will be better then them? They are truely a gamble and I really don't know right now which way I would lean.

Who stays? From top priority to least
DAVE JAMES...this is going to be controversial. Why did I stick a new host who really isn't a host yet on the top? No it is not favoritism as there are more popular hosts out there. It is potential. QVC needs new hosts to lead QVC to the future. Dave is a new face. As a host in training, he is fantastic. He is already better than half of the hosting staff that are full time hosts. He has personality, is fun loving, and at least for now loves his job. He is the new energy that will keep QVC up and running.
DAN HUGHES...another semi-controversial pick. Why did I place him second on the keep list? He does something that no other host can do, run a successful and entertaining sports show in For Race Fans Only. Patti, Kim Parrish, and Christa have attempted it and failed. For 12 years running, he had one of the highest rated shows on QVC. If he left, no one else would be able to fill his place. QVC would lose a top rated show if he left and would have no way of replacing it. This ranking could be a little bias because I had a friend who went to the taping of one of his shows and she said that everyone (the drivers, the pit crew, the crowd) absolutely loved him. So I have some QVC taping information to provide support for my reasoning while others I do not. Whether that is the reason or not, the fact that his show is still running shows that there is loyalty there for some reason. I may not stick him on the morning show though. Pat is gone, and it might be best to start with a fresh new morning show or scrap the show all together. I would extend the sport show airings and make him the primary sports show host. Dan Wheeler is gone, so it's up to him now.
MARY BETH ROWE...She is a legacy on QVC. She has been there for years and is very popular among the QVC viewers. She has a reputation of being someone who viewers can trust and who viewers like watching.
LISA MASON...Lisa really is intriguing. She's a little bit innocent country girl, a little bit Courtney Love with her explosive outtakes and comments, and a little bit Princess Diana with her compassion. I really have not seen a personality like her on any shopping network. She comes off as fun, professional, and entertaining.
DAVID VENABLE...Another one that has personality. However, it's personality that you either love or you hate. David is kept primarily to do the cooking shows. No one else is able to do it as good as him who is left on the show. Plus, he seems to be popular with the fans.
JACQUE GONZALES...She is a newer host to QVC. What makes her such an asset to QVC is that she is new enough to bring newer energy to the station yet old enough to be credited as an established host. She is part of the future of QVC. Her presentations are technically sound and good. Her personality is there and there are times where it seeps through.
JAYNE BROWN...Another one that has gained fans among QVC viewers. Where her personality is lacking, she makes up for in genuinity. People again, believe and trust her. Her presentations are technically sound and compassionate.
DAVE KING...He is a good host. However, the reason why he is ranked so low is that other hosts do their different categories of shows better. Cooking is left to David V/Dave J. Jewelry is left to Jacque/Lisa/Jayne. Fashion is left to Lisa/Jayne/Jacque. Electronics is left to Dave J/David V./Dan H. Sports/collectables is left to Dan H. That leaves him to do the left over shows. However, you always need one on the staff that can be the host that is versitle and can do a variety of shows. He is popular among viewers and can be the switch hitter who does a multitude of shows.

Who to pick up?
Hosts with personality
Hosts who are genuine and believable
Hosts who are not arrogant
Hosts who have good speaking skills
Hosts who can listen and interact with hosts/callers/guests well
Hosts who the public likes. If the message board is filled with posts mentioning how bad a host is, QVC needs to take notice. This is your customers talking and as a TV retailer, you have to please your customers.

Actually, I don't think that this post was negative. It was pretty darn accurate!

I agree with so much that you said here, StillN/A. Your insight and perspective are so thorough and well-considered that I really think that QVC should hire you to evaluate their on-air talent.

I would only make one small swap, and that would be to send Leah to the KEEP list and exchange her for David V.

"Red Rover, Red Rover, send YUM YUM FACE right over!"

LEAH: I really, really like Leah. Her laugh doesn't annoy me, and I learn a lot about the products she talks about. It appears that she completely does her homework, and she mentions things that I want to know and other hosts gloss over. For example, she shows the backs of things, she talks about how much earrings weigh and she really listens to the callers' questions without interrupting, among other things. To me, she displays products in the 3-D form that is lacking on televised shopping. I watch and enjoy her each chance I get.

YUM YUM: One pretty normal example. A few weeks ago, there was a popcorn product with Patti as the lead host. DV crept down the set's stairs like a tall elf until he was in the shot. Then he snatched a handful of popcorn and skipped off out of the shot. He looked like a ham, and it was ridiculously distracting. I don't think he can play the part of a HOST on QVC without that "hambone" cuteness plowing through. He makes me want to say Stop It, and I do that by reaching for the remote or doing something else. I don't watch him.

Just my thoughts. Thanks.

StillN/A, yours is THE BEST post on show-hosts yet !! My one personal exception ~~ I do like Dave King a whole bunch. The man has personality, is smooth as silk, and is Just So Cool. But, all of what you say about the others is SO right-on it's almost painful, if you know what I mean there. Pat J-D may be indeed be bored, she's been there since forever and it's probably long been same-old same-old for her ...... which makes me wonder if her facelift is so she can go look for a job elsewhere, once she is totally healed from it .......

Thank goodness we live in America - we can all express our opinions here. I started reading these posts some time ago because I wanted to see if there was any info on Judy Crowell -- anyway, I am totally surprised about alot of these posts - there is alot of negativity, some humor and many many opinions!! But this is what makes the world go round. Needless to say, all the hosts are still laughing all the way to the bank!!

Just out of curiousity, anyone know how long face lifts take to heal? Maybe we need to ask Joan Rivers that question as she is an expert on plastic surgery.

As for different opinions, I totally appreciate them. This is by no means the perfect list of hirings and firing but a start of the discussion on hosts and what QVC can do to fix their host problem, if there is one.

Palmetto17 and Cat-Lady, I found your comment on Leah and Dave K. very interesting. Now I understand more fully the appeal of Leah and Dave K. So I appreciate those additions to the thread.

I don't think QVC would ever fire Lisa R. She is a money making machine. But it would be nice for her to have a reality check and shave off some of that ego. Also tone down on the hair, brows, and lip liner. Then I would enjoy watching more.

Let me ask you guys a question. If a product you like was on sale with a reasonable shipping and handling--would you give a **** who is selling it?????????

10-03-2004, 04:29 PM
Good points. I am sure no one will get fired, especially from a post on a message board. After all, I'm just a number to them out of the millions of viewers. The all mighty QVC could care less about my opinion. As I said before, QVC doesn't like to admit host mistakes.

Actually, I do care who is selling it. At times I've boycotted stores and catalogs for years because of bad/rude service. Let's face it -- the whole premise of a shopping channel is based on attracting and entertaining viewers. Otherwise, they could just have a web site.

Palmetto17
10-03-2004, 04:42 PM
I gotta agree with Junebug.

I don't watch Yum Yum Face, as I have already mentioned. David V. could have the something unbelievably awesome, like the toaster oven I need (on EasyPay with no S/H), and I'd never know about it because I don't, can't, won't watch him. Shucks, he could give the toaster oven away, and I'd never know about it.

I believe the hosts are entertaining many of us [on these bb, especially] in good and bad ways [otherwise, half these posts wouldn't even be written and I wouldn't be responding right now]. If I've tried a product from a show with a "good" host, and liked it, and that same product is on a show with a "bad" host, that wouldn't prevent me from buying it. Being on TV makes you open to subjectivism--especially on dress and attitude [poor Patti and Rick]. Joan Rivers, who I think is hilarious, is probably looked at by many as the rudest person on QVC. She entertains me.

StillN/A

I actually think a host does make the difference to an extent. If you really want a product or like a vendor, you can excuse it. However, if you are just a casual buyer who really doesn't need the object and it would be a luxury, host personalities make a difference. If the viewer is annoyed by the host, they will say, well I don't need the product, I don't want to watch this show and turn it off.

You guys do make a point. I'm just letting you know that I think the hosts aren't so terrible that if I see the product function and liked it, I wouldn't buy it/not buy it because of any of the QVC hosts I've seen. Especially, if they were polite but had a shirt on that may have been "too tight" for some or had an annoying laugh. You guys try to sell on TV and watch the compliments "fly".

I think talking about anything for lengths of time would be tiring. If we were "birdies" on a QVC host bulletin board, I'm sure they'd have a lot to say about what they're told to do, what to wear and selling a product they couldn't stand. But, everyone needs a job...don't they?

It's called having an opinion. And plenty of others don't like Laurie. Why single me out? Why are you so stuck on supporting Laurie? How do you know her? If you have a dissenting opinion, then state it maturely without third grade insults. No one can take you seriously when you are in an immature, defensive, insulting mood.

I realize N/A is just stating an opinion....however, do you really think a multi-billion dollar company like QVC doesn't regularly and quantitatively examine the performance of the show hosts? Of course there are many ways to measure public/customer opinion. But a self-selected group on a bulletin board would not rank very high on the list of inputs.

They look at the bottom line...dollars. If a show host doesn't pull in the sales, then they'll pull the plug.

They are not about to let some of their top hosts go...esp. Lisa R. and Rick D. No matter how self-absorbed and rude they appear to some of their viewing public. The numbers outshout those complaints.

With the newer ones, they have to give them a year or so to see how they do.

N/A, you seem to be in "the know" about QVC. Could you possibly be Dave James? I seem to be getting those vibes. If you are indeed Dave James, I have to agree that you are "one great host-in-training." However, I do enjoy Lisa Robertson and Rick Domier- he's just a kidder. I don't feel that he or Lisa are arrogant. Just my opinion though.

Turned on the kitchen TV this morning. The minute I heard her voice I felt disappointed. I knew it was her. Laurie Shore pitching charms. I think someone in her ear was telling her to move on because she kept saying, "OK, I'm moving on". Laurie Shore talking to a caller: "Are you serious?" "I believe you." Then talking to the camera: "We could have done a whole show on these charms!" (...and the viewers could hurl) I didn't change channels since it was just 5 minutes til the end of her. Actually, I watched just to see what stupid thing she was going to do next. She is such an android.

Laurie Shore is a nice person and a perfectly fine host. Some of you must have some really pathetic lives if you need to come on here and post negative things about her just to try to feel better about yourselves.

Also, I don't think I have to "bring it". I'm really not worried about anyone's wit. As long as Laurie Shore is a host at QVC and we all keep on watching I'd say I'm winning. She's going to be there for a long time so ya better get used to her.

I have an idea - why don't you apply for a host job and then we can rip you apart. Why don't you go outside, enjoy life, talk a walk, rather than sit in front of the TV for 24 hours a day, which it sounds like you do.

Just to avoid confusion, I am in no way connected to QVC. I am not nor am I related to a host, guest, or other QVC personnel. Although flattering, I can claim no ties to QVC nor will I probably be tied to QVC in the future. I am just a watcher of QVC with an opinion.

My views on hosts have changed quite a bit. Especially since Bob keeps pissing everyone off. So instead of doing a long explanation I'll do an NCAA ranking of best (#1) to worst host QVC has based on the same factors as the original post stated (personality, host ability, potential, future impact). And no, it isn't scientific. I don't have a formula going on. LOL!

1. DAVE JAMES... same as above
2. DAN HUGHES...same as above
3. LISA MASON...same as above
4. JACQUE GONZALES...same as above
5. MARY BETH ROWE...same as above
6. DAVE KING...same as above
7. JAYNE BROWN
8. ANTONELLA NESTER... getting better especially during Valerie's candle show. She actually has a lot of potential to be something really good.
9. DAVID VENABLE... now that I notice the yum yum faces, he can stop it anytime.
10.LEAH WILLIAMS...not as annoyed with her as I was recently.
11.PATTI REILLY...same as above
12.SHEILA (forget her last name)...same as above. Antonella has really stepped it up while Sheila has stayed the same.
13. SHARON FAETSCH...same as above
14. PAT JAMES DEMENTRI...same as above
15. RICK DOMIER...see Lisa R's comment
16. LISA ROBERTSON...not as annoying compared to the others below her.
17. JILL BAUER...same as above
18. DAN WHEELER...same as above
19. BOB BOWERSOX...the Maria comment alone got him here.
20. LENA MCILWAIN... placing her as a TSV host at midnight shows her inadequacy in both host ability and personality.
21. CHRISTA PITTS...devoid of all personality and poor hosting abilities.
22. LAURIE SHORE...same as above. Let's just say watching her sell cooking pots was the scariest QVC moment of the month.

Jacque is annoying with her voice and squinty eyes. I totally disagree that she is an asset to qvc. She thinks she's got it made with her hubby working there.

I'm not a Jacque fan at all -- nails on the blackboard! Other than that your list looks very reasonable. For myself, I couldn't break it down that specifically. I'd have to stick to groupings. There are some I like a lot, some I like OK, and some I don't like. The middle group is pretty big.

Thanks for giving us something to think about Still N/A.

When all is said and done, isn 't the job of the QVC Host to MAKE US WANT to buy the product ?? Not, do we NEED it, but do we WANT it, without us asking ourselves Why. Just like a live auction, get it before it's gone !! The successful hosts make us want it baaaad, WITHOUT turning us all off with mannerisms, rudeness to callers or models, poor demonstration of what the product does, gazing at their image on the monitor, yapping about everything But the product, etc. You can almost count the hosts on the fingers of one hand who do NOT turn us all off with something about themselves that is simply deadly to their sales. It sure does not help that the Q's ever-diminishing Quality Control, and general lowering of standards regarding the selection of products to begin with, makes the hosts' jobs that much more challenging, shall we say. It could be that many of the hosts, feeling trapped in their jobs (who else would pay them like the Q), and feeling like passengers on the Titanic, are subconsciously letting their contempt show .......

You nailed it, Cat-Lady! You're right -- if I needed something I'd probably buy it anyway, but I really don't need most of the stuff I buy from the Q, so the host and presentation can make a big difference.

Thanks for posting this. "Passengers on the Titanic" -- LOL!

N/A, as usual, I appreciate your observations and insight. Thanks for the effort, even if some don't understand your intent. I agree with almost everything you said, BTW!

Cat-Lady, kudos to you, too! I can count the hosts that I like on one hand and still have one finger left over to pick my nose with!!! Your remark about wanting/needing a product - I could not agree more.

StillN/A

*stands up and applauds Cat-Lady's remark.

I totally agree with you Cat-Lady. Fantastic comment! For instance with Laurie Shore, I am so distracted with her frantic hand motions and fast talking that I spend more time watching her in disbelief than the products she is selling. Thus, my focus is not on the product and if I'm not looking at the product, I'm not buying it. If this happens among the general public, QVC will lose sales.

Oh and one general request to QVC (as if they are listening LOL!), don't stick Lena on every single TSV debut at midnight . A TSV needs a host with lots of hosting skills and little distracting qualities, and she seems to be deficient in it at certain points in the presentation. I understand they are giving Lena more experience, but maybe they should work it in gradually.

I've seen Mary Beth and Patti do the midnight TSV in the past couple of months. In one, Patti did a TSV commercial about1/2 hour before midnight then came on at midnight to kick it off. Mary Beth has been on at midnight in the past 2 months...I saw her two times working til 1AM. I see QVC adding popular hosts to the night shift line up more than ever. Night shift doesn't seem to be just for new hosts or just for training purposes anymore. It's more like QVC has expanded their prime time hours to serve the west coast side of the country, after the east side is snoring, and is going after those western dollars. I can watch most of QVC hosts with no grief with the exception of Laurie Shore. Laurie just isn't a host type personality. I turn Laurie off but that probably won't influence her career.

Lena is horrible. She must use the word "wonderful" about 50 million times. Some of these hosts don't get what it means to sell--I was not a big fan of Jane Rudolph Treacy, but she knew how to sell items, and get people interested in buying a product.

StillN/A -- YOU provide so much entertainment to this board!! Thanks for the "juicy" post -- you come up with new posts and thoughts to get the opinions going here. :-)

Palmetto -- LOL!!!! I haven't seen Laurie Shore that much but your play-by-play was hysterical!

StillN/A, I've gotta (respectfully, of course) disagree with you on Dan Hughes. You must be in a NASCAR fog!! Hee hee. That is one of the MOST boring shows on QVC!!! Aaargghhhhhhh!!!!! It's just like when they have a sports show devoted to one person entirely -- I know I've seen them, maybe a baseball guy who's been on? Serious zzzzzzzzzzzzz-ing! I say, take Nascar OFF QVC!!

Shopping, I agree. Lena does say wonderful a lot. I just noticed that last night. She needs to find a new catch phrase.

And thanks for the compliment ladybug. Most of my posts are meant as a sounding board. I think it's cool when people can respectfully state their opinion on topics. It shows that everyone has a sees the same host or show a little differently and we all can learn from each other's perceptions. I would have never caught on to Lena's frequent use of wonderful if shopping didn't mention it. So that was a good piece of info.

I agree with Still N/A. As I've said from the beginning, Laurie Shore is the worst host ever. I can't stand to watch her.

I have to agree that the hosts are more alike than they are different. I like some more than others, some I watch because I want to see the products even if I don't like the host all that much, but I gotta agree with the majority of posters here: Laurie Shore is THE all-time most annoying, offensive host EVER on ANY of the shopping channels--and I watch 'em all! I can even take loudmouth Charla (sp?) from ShopNBC more than I can bear to watch or listen to Laurie. When she's on, QVC is changed. If I happen to be interested in what she might be selling, I check them out later on QVC.com 24-hr. Product Review. Amen.

Re: the worst hosts ever hired.

Good list StillN/A. I've always liked Jill, but the list is pretty on the money.

Thanks Junebug. Jill is probably my most controversial pick. I thought about ranking the top 10 best hosts QVC ever hired but everyone is probably getting sick of my lists.

Oh, and KathyFF bichonlady, I definately agree wity you two.

It would seem that many(not all)of the Q's host/hostess are trying out for some acting/comedy gig. I realize it( Q.V.C.)needs some entertaining value to draw in the viewers...some go a little overboard. There is nothing wrong with the witty & harmless remarks that many of them make...just keep it real. By the way, I appreciate the many comments to my post...Rick Domeir big ego-small mind. I enjoyed the many comments! Thanks, Kygrl
p.s. oops, I mispelled Domeir(Domeier)

Two people they could use:

1. Yolanda Vega: The Queen of the New York State Lottery should go national.

2. Shauna Hyatt: The Vanna White of the World SPAMSPAMSPAMSPAMSPAM Tour's telecasts on the Travel Channel deserves a shot.

Yes, it is, but I think it's efficient to bump an older thread to ask a question than start a whole new one. :)

This seems as good of a thread as any to ask the burning question, "Why are they having hosts work for ONE hour?" This drives me crazy. Any ideas?

I think some hosts are working 1 hour shifts due to the shows. For instance, if you tune into QVC around 9pm EDT, and the show is fashion/beauty, you may see oh let's say Sharon hosting it, and if the next show at 10pm EDT, was dell computers, you would probably see Rick or Dan hosting that show.

Yes, I understand that Dan Wheeler would not be hosting a make up show but that is my point - they used to have a line up of shows almost geared for a particular host. Like Monday night for example: PM Style from 8 to 10 so they would have a show at 7:00 or 10:00 that Lisa R. would also do. Now, the one hour shifts look as if QVC made a mistake in their host schedule. They may be trying to mix it up a bit but to me, it looks silly, like there is a lack of planning. Really now, if you were a host, would you want to come in to be on the air from 11:00 p.m. to midnight and then go home? Maybe they want us to tune in at the top of every hour to see the host. If that is the case, that is not a good strategy because in an hour, I can find a movie, a documentary, etc. to watch and NOT tune back in for several hours!

Why don't QVC hire Ellen Simonetti the ex-Delta flight attendant who got fired for taking photos of herself and putting them on her web site. Sure she has a lot of baggage but then again the Mets took a chance signing Pedro Martinez and so far he has been nothing but a solid citizen. 1. This Just In: Go To Hell-Kent Brockman (The Simpsons) 2. Hey Mister, Can You Spell ****-D.B. Sweeney (8 Men Out) 3. I need more cowbell-Christopher Walken (SNL)

Put - QVC would never hire a host with a 'past'. They want regular people and seem to frown upon anyone that has any real television experience. (Hence the need for a "New Host Line-Up Needed!) If there was a hint of scandal, forget it.

I watched Jill Bauer come back for her first show. Now I remember why I thought she was so obnoxious. Yes, I agree she seems to be thrilled to be a mother, but her old self will come thru once she returns. She just comes across as such a snot. Wonder what she is like in "real" life.
